My wife and I have both been homebrewing for years. Brewing is something we have fallen in love with and we have decided to take the plunge into opening a brewery. We live in Canton, MI and there isn't a single brewery or brewery with a taproom in this city and that's rare for Michigan. After talking to investors and freeing up as much of our own money as possible we decided to do something about it.
What is Canton Brew Works?
Canton Brew Works will be a 3bbl brewery with a 48 seat taproom so we can sell pints on-site and provide growler and howler fills for customers to take home with them. Like most taprooms this size, we won't be providing food, but you can bring in food or have it delivered. Within a hundred feet of us we have Pizza Station for great pizza, subs and salads and Shish House, one of the area's best reviewed Mediterranean restaurants. You can come enjoy a pint, grab some take out, then bring it back to enjoy with another pint!
What's your status? How far along are you?
Canton Brew Works is about to enter the build-out stage and we expect to be open in late November or December of this year.
Canton Brew Works has been approved for our Federal License and we have received our Brewer's Notice. The Canton Township Board of Trustees unanimously approved us and now we're waiting on State approval which we expect to receive in late October or November.
What are you raising money for...
We have started this project because we want our taproom to be a place for great conversation and great beer and we need your support to help us over the last financial hurdles.
What? Can you repeat that?
Ever tried having a conversation in a bar? How many times have you had to repeat yourself so someone 2 feet away can hear you? Ever just start nodding along to what someone is saying because you don't want to say "What?" for the fifth time? We have and we don't want this happening in our taproom.
In order to provide the environment we want, we would like to add acoustic paneling to the walls and ceiling to make it easier to have a conversation when you visit us.
If we surpass our goals we will add more plumbing improvements and get more equipment. These stretch goals will allow us to produce more beer and produce it faster.
What kind of rewards are you offering?
The rewards we offer range from stickers and shirts to the ability for you to brew one of your homebrew recipes with us.
What are your beers?
We are currently planning on launching with 6 beers. We haven't finalized the list yet, but they will probably be the following:
Pale Ale with Nelson Sauvin Hops
American Brown Ale
Pumpkin Ale or a Tamarind and Chili IPA
Other beers on the docket are a coffee brown ale, a rye barrel aged stout, a Kentucky Common(sour), a mildly smoked pale ale and single malt, single hop beer using 6-row malt and nugget hops.
If there is an interest, we may produce a gluten-reduced beer using a product that breaks down the existing gluten molecules called Brewers Clarex.
So please contribute to our Kickstarter campaign then come to Canton Brew Works, have a pint and chat for a while.
What's the deal with all of your headers starting with the word 'What'?
What? I can't hear you. We don't have our acoustic paneling yet. Sorry, I couldn't help it.
Risks and challenges
The risks in this project are that the initial acoustic panels won't be enough to dampen the noise as much as I'd like. If that's the case we'll finance more panels. Another risk is that we'll get all our remaining permits at once and we'll be focusing our efforts on getting the brewery ready, which could cause a short delay in getting the rewards shipped out. Canton Brew Works is going to open but a successful Kickstarter campaign will allow us to do more from the start.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
