About this project
If you or a loved one is battling cancer, then you know about the stresses that come along with it: the heartache, the pain, the little changes that you need to make each day. You also know, however, that there is a level of stress that comes along with this fight, stress brought on by the seemingly endless march of pills and appointments and tests and operations. It’s enough to get to anybody. You try writing it all down, but this isn’t your everyday job: it’s more than that. You’re in a life-or-death situation, and the commitments are piling up. “What do you do?” you ask. “What do you do?”
Now, we have an answer. CanPlan is a one-of-a-kind planner designed specifically for cancer patients and their caregivers. It provides daily reminders, guidelines for positive living, and methods for monitoring and tracking all of the details of your illness every step of the way. This isn’t simply a planner: it’s a roadmap to recovery, a book that will return control of your life back into your hands. Once you’re sick, you know you need a hand. With CanPlan, you’ll have one.
The end vision for CanPlan is to create a community of planners who can share their tips and collaborate on strategies to help fine tune a constructive plan to beat cancer. If each person uses CanPlan and shares what worked and didn't work for them in their treatment plan, the possibilities for healing are endless.
Once you back this project at any reward level, I will send you an invite to an exclusive Facebook group where you can share your cancer story and connect with other patients & caregivers. Whether you're a patient, caregiver, family member, friend or doctor, I'm sure there's a compelling reason behind your decision to back my project. Think of it in the same way that support groups help with self healing. I encourage you all to share your story as well as any useful tips you think a fellow fighter should know and use this as an outlet to express yourself. I will also provide exclusive project updates as well as monthly tips & secrets full of cancer fighting recipes, extended survivor testimonials, current event news about the latest treatments, and anything & everything to help you fight cancer the right way. You will also have access to exclusive giveaways and events just by being a backer and joining the community. Let's show cancer what a community full of love and positivity can do!
- Empower people to share their cancer story
- Change the way patients/caregivers fight cancer by guiding them through the various stages of cancer
- Promote self healing by helping patients bring out their inner doctor
- Encourage a happier, healthier lifestyle with positive thinking & natural therapies
- Motivate patients to be the expert about their illness
- Strengthen the relationship between patient and doctor so they can act as a team in achieving treatment goals
PLEASE WATCH THIS HEARTWARMING VIDEO BEFORE READING ON. IT WILL BRING YOU TO TEARS.
This video shows the grueling battles my family & I went through while my mom was sick and validates the need for a planner like CanPlan. Please watch and share her story in order to help us spread awareness.
It was December 6, 2013 when I first found out that my mom was diagnosed with uterine sarcoma cancer. I had recently graduated from SCU with my Bachelors in Psychology & Business and was just beginning my career as a Marketing Manager for a high-paced tech company in the Silicon Valley, when I received a frantic call from my sister saying that I had to come home to Hawaii immediately. Without hesitation, I went with my gut feeling and bought a one way ticket back to Hawaii, leaving my life and career behind.
Three months after my mom finished her last round of chemotherapy, we got a call from the doctor saying that her cancer had metastasized to her lungs. She was now diagnosed with stage 4 cancer with little to no treatment options and three months left to live. I remember instantly feeling numb right when I heard the news because I knew at that point the doctors, our only form of solace, had given up on her. It was now our job to help my mom bring out the doctor in herself.
For all the cancer patients reading this right now, this is the game-changing mentality you need to have from the very beginning. According to the American Medical Association’s (AMA) Physician database, there are approximately 13,400 physicians in the United States who specialize primarily in adult medical oncology and/or hematology, while there are approximately 14.5 million Americans living with a history of cancer! With the doctor to patient ratio being 1:1,044, you can begin to see how the size and demographics of the oncology workforce heavily influence patients’ ability to access high-quality cancer care. This is why it's more important than ever for patients to start taking control over their cancer. You are the one fighting this battle. You should know your body and your cancer better than anyone else. Your inner doctor is the only doctor capable of helping you win this fight.
With this new mentality in mind, I started to keep track of everything from my mom’s medications & side effects, to her diet, exercise, and mood so that I could gain a better understanding of what her illness was like day by day. She had about 6 different medications & new symptoms arising each day, so I found this to be very effective in monitoring how her body was reacting to certain treatments. Having a systematic way to track an unpredictable illness was the answer I should've been looking for from the very beginning. It gave me more control over the situation, allowed me to develop a treatment plan that best suited my mom’s needs and prepared me to take action in the case of a worsening symptom.
Unfortunately, I started building upon this idea when it was already too late in the game. On November 3, 2014, I watched my mom take her last breath as she gently loosened the grip she had on my hand. I can't even put into words how hard it's been for my family and I without my mom. If you had the pleasure of meeting her, you'd know she was the type of person that could instantly put a smile on your face. I'm sad that God had to take her so soon, but I truly believe His intention was for something greater to come out of this. Everything that I've done in my life thus far has prepared me to create this planner. I used my Psychology background to integrate influences for positivity throughout the planner, my marketing background to design a beautiful planner with user friendliness in mind, and my loss to motivate me to create an effective tool that teaches cancer patients and caregivers that they can plan to beat cancer. Through this painful journey, the basis for CanPlan was formulated. And after many, MANY long nights full of tears, frustration, joy and every emotion you could ever think possible...CanPlan is finally ready to help guide the millions of people affected by cancer.
Unfortunately not all cancer patients have the assistance of a caregiver, which is why I directed the tone of the planner towards cancer patients. However CanPlan is just as beneficial to caregivers as it is to cancer patients because both parties are deeply involved, emotionally & mentally, in the stages of cancer. The vision for CanPlan was to have the caregiver use the planner as a tool for recording and organizing all the necessary information & to act as a middleman in portraying the messages of CanPlan to the cancer patient. Together both parties can work towards coming up with the most optimal treatment plan for the cancer patient. Although CanPlan specifically targets victims of cancer, it can also be beneficial for those with any type of chronic illness. Think of CanPlan as a planner that promotes organization, analytical thought processes & motivation for anyone with a medical condition.
Hey, this might be a stretch but CanPlan can even be used by those who are just trying to live a more positive life. The daily motivational quotes and exercises to inspire positive thinking are really beneficial to just about everyone, so feel free to be creative and make CanPlan your own.
Flip through a few of the main pages within the planner. Please note that not all of the pages are within this preview, since I wanted there to be some element of surprise when you actually receive your planners. By backing this project, you can look forward to a bunch of bonus features like tips from cancer survivors, loads of positivity exercises and the secrets to fighting cancer the right way.
Daily Tracker: Imagine that you're about to climb Mount Everest for the first time. You know you need to get to the top of the mountain, but you're unsure of which path to take. So you come up with an action plan to take baby steps each day and record your findings along the way. Since you don't have a map, you need to create one yourself. Each and every day you learn something new about the mountain; how far the rest points are, where the danger peaks are located, etc. You start to become more in tune with your body and learn how much you can and cannot handle in one day. Thanks to your tracking, you eventually begin to have a mental image of where you're located on the mountain and what you need to do to get to the top. Now relate this back to your journey with cancer and picture this daily tracker as a template for your map. It gives you all the signs you should be looking for and then points you in the direction you should be heading. At any point in your journey, you can reference back to a specific point in time and find clues as to what triggered a good or bad reaction in your treatment plan.
Monthly Recap: At the end of each month, you'll be able to put all the data together and evaluate your treatment plan thus far. The questions will push you to reflect on what worked well for you during the month so that you can apply the same techniques to the following month.
Quote of the Day: Start each and every day off on the right foot by reading the inspirational quote of the day.
Today's Goal: Have a goal for each day so you can spend your time & energy focusing on what matters.
To-Do List: Write down all of the tasks you need to complete for the day or use this space for notes.
Medication & Side Effects: As a cancer patient, you probably have a handful of prescriptions and supplements you need to take daily. Now you won't have to leave it up to memory to keep track of everything.
Diet Tracker & Exercise Log: What you put into your body is crucial during this time and I cannot emphasize the need for a healthy diet enough. Keeping track of your diet will allow you to see exactly how certain foods are affecting your body.
New Symptoms & Action Steps: Take action in the case of a new or worsening symptom and keep record of when it started. It might help you in finding correlations as to what triggered its onset.
End of the Day Reflection: Rate yourself at the end of each day on how you felt overall and why. Even if you had a bad day, there's always something to be positive about.
Appointment Tracker: Keep track of all your appointments so you can stay organized and reflect back on any important notes.
Cancer Roadmap: By noting the important milestones in your cancer journey, you'll begin to tie the different elements of this planner together and paint a visual image of where you are and where you need to go.
Cancer Food Pyramid: Use this food pyramid as a guide to coming up with an effective diet plan that fights your cancer.
#KIMotherapy Checklist: For those of you who decide to incorporate chemotherapy into your treatment plan, here is a tip sheet on how you can overcome the grueling side effects.
Treatment Evaluation: Lay out the pros and cons for each of your treatment options and find a primary & supplementary plan that works best for you.
Please note that the final product will look slightly different than the planner you see in the photos. The manufacturing company I'm working with sent me a sample of what the planner will look in terms of quality of leather, ribbon, and paper, but I unfortunately can't get my hands on a final prototype until I can secure a down payment, which is a third of the total cost. The planner you see in the photos is a prototype that I made with another local printing company that didn't have a minimum quantity. They couldn't get the planner to look exactly like the final product due to the lack of materials, so bear with me and try to imagine the planner with these specifications. I will upload a picture of the final product once it's available.

OUTSIDE COVER SAMPLE:
I started off with the original journal I used while my mom was sick as the foundation and got to work on some sketches for the daily tracker. I referenced over 25 different planners to come up with the design & layout, and over 15 different health/diet/cancer-related journals to come up with the content. I must've sketched out over a dozen different versions before I finally found 2-3 formats I wanted to build upon.
I've tested out the main pages of the planner as well as two different versions of the daily tracker with 40 different cancer patients, all at various stages and diagnoses. I asked them to provide me with feedback on what they liked/didn't like about the planner in terms of content and format. I took the same unbiased approach with the caregivers and had 14 different primary caretakers review the planner, all of whom were caring for patients with various stages and diagnoses of cancer. Here's an example of the questionnaire I asked them to fill out.
I got a 100% positive response rate from all the patients and caregivers about the general idea for the planner and was consistently reassured that this is something they needed that isn't currently in the market. I also got valuable feedback as to how I could improve the daily tracker to make it more efficient. Most of the revisions were done on the actual InDesign file but here's a visual of how the tracker has been transformed after being tested.
I have successfully completed the first edition of the planner and am working with a local printing company to begin the bulk printing. I am also in contact with 13 different cancer organizations & 56 patients/caregivers (and the list keeps growing) who are looking to receive a donated planner. If you have no direct use for CanPlan, but still want to support the cause, you can choose to buy a CanPlan for these recipients in need.
All I need at this point to begin the printing process are the funds. All of the funds made from this project will go towards printing, manufacturing and shipping the planners. Here's the breakdown assuming I make my $12,000 goal:
- $7,000 will go towards printing & manufacturing
- $3,500 will go towards shipping & handling
- $1,080 will go towards Kickstarter fees (9% of funds)
- The remaining funds will go towards CanPlan's 2nd edition (expected to arrive Jan 2017)
I have created a few stretch goals under the "rewards" section for you to see what I will spend the money on if this project exceeds its goal.
Since I want CanPlan to be available to all those in need, I will happily provide anyone with a PDF copy free of charge. In return, all I ask is that you help me spread awareness about my project. Once you've shared the project, please take a screenshot of your post and then email it to me at email@example.com. I will then email you back with a downloadable PDF version of the main pages. Here are three ways you can share my project:

Risks and challenges
I'm working day and night to try and get these planners to you by mid-April to early May, so I'm praying for absolutely no delays in the turnaround time. I hope you all understand that setbacks do arise in terms of manufacturing and shipping that I may not have control over, so I ask for your patience in this. However, I'm keeping a close eye on every step of the process in order to ensure that these planners arrive on time, if not earlier.
If you couldn't already tell, I have a very small team and a very small budget so most of the services we've acquired have been through donations from people who believe in our project. Thankfully I've worked with numerous start-up companies so I understand how to efficiently use limited resources. However if you believe in the benefits of CanPlan and would like to make a donation to help with the expenses (marketing, manpower, legal & business consultation), please visit our website. We'd sincerely appreciate anything to help us get this planner going: https://mycanplan.com/preorderLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
