Dogs stealing stuff - in a card game
Pilfer your way to doggy victory in this quirky, light-hearted, all ages card game that mixes set collection, trading, hand management and take-that gameplay with pooch-related silliness and skulduggery.
- Build sets of Collectables in hand and ‘hide’ them before they're pinched from you in a bid to score the most Pooch Points
- Decide if, when and what to trade to obtain sets or Hiding Places
- Experience highs and lows with game-changing Action cards and high stakes die rolls
- Trick opponents into taking the dreaded Poo Pizza
- Celebrate as you get The Ultimate Paw of Pilferage, then gasp as it’s snatched from you.
Rather like the average faithful family hound, this game is both gloriously simple, loveable and a faithful companion that will follow you everywhere!
Hey, hey, what it's like to play?
You'll be trying to make up and hide sets of Squeaky Toys, Mangled Old Shoes, Golden Y Fronts and all manner of other pongy titbits to score the most Pooch Points.
You'll be trying to bluff other players into taking this revolting splat off you to avoid going down 30 Pooch Points at the end of the game!
You'll celebrate as you're endowed with the power of the Ultimate Paw of Pilferage and then protest loudly as it's nabbed from you.
You’ll encounter Fishy Blasts, Flaky Back Crumbs and Fluffy Rumbles.
The joyful graphic styling, doggy-theme and light, accessible gameplay combine to create a ludicrous all-ages game, which despite being simple to learn and play, is strangely addictive and endlessly replayable.
What's in the Box?
Inside the little 'take-me-anywhere' orange box is a mouth-watering melange of mutt-related swag and silliness, including:
- 72 Collectables cards
- 57 Action cards (including 20 all-important Hiding Place cards)
- 13 Master’s Bedroom cards
- 8 Doggy Character cards
- Game die
- Rules leaflet
Whilst the basic mechanics are spelled out in the video, read on for a cheeky niblet of what the game brings as a sociable experience for family and friends of all ages...
First, imagine your setting:
- A busy buzzing board game café full of happy punters
- A cosy camp gathering on a wet summer holiday
- Games night with kids and grandparents
- A slightly hazy post-dinner-party-gathering with friends and family
- A perfect filler game with mates down the ‘Dog & Duck' pub
Sitting centre stage in your imagined place is a table with a scattering of brightly coloured cards. There's an excited chatty buzz and a mix of smiles and pained grimaces. People are busily taking turns drawing Action cards and responding with various degrees of joy and despair...
In Canine Kleptomaniacs the main way you score points is by 'hiding' two or more like kinds of cards by laying them on top of a Hiding Place. Throughout the game you keep adding sets to your Hiding Place(s).
As the game progresses there's a load of fluff and nonsense as players bargain with each other to get the sets they want. Some players are mercenary, whilst others are more conciliatory!
A little way into the game you desperately want to hide a couple of juicy Golden Y Fronts, but your only Hiding Place is occupied with Pretty Knickers.
Fear not! You can make a swap.
On your next turn, you've gained another Golden Y Front.
Oops, you can't hide single cards!
But, what's this?
You decide to take a gamble, swapping back the Golden Y Fronts from your Hiding Place into your hand, replacing them temporarily with Pretty Knickers.
If you get by unscathed you'll be able to hide them next turn and bingo, you'll have bagged an additional 20 Pooch Points!
But disaster strikes...for you at least!!
Someone draws the Fluffy Rumble, causing everyone's hands to be shuffled together and dealt back out!
And so, the groans, gleeful outbursts, silly gloating songs and general banter continues.
This scene gives you the merest glimpse of what Canine Kleptomaniacs will bring into your world, for better (and worse). You have been warned!
Reviews, feedback and comments
Over a period of a couple of years evolving the game, we've played it with dog-lovers, dog-agnostics, dog whisperers (not really), regular gamers, occasional gamers, young families, oldies and even teens, with universally positive feedback. We've also asked a few gamey people to preview the game.
Hairy Game Lords:
(Addendum: Due to some rule changes implemented after play testing, the game duration has been shortened to 20 mins but can be extended to about 30 mins with a second round. Whilst the game can be played with up to 7 players with fewer Hiding Places, we're suggesting 2 - 5 players is optimal).

What, no stretch goals?
We like simple.
In the same spirit we’re not planning unwieldy stretch goals to confuse and complicate our efforts to deliver you this lovely little game, particularly as this is our first campaign.
If our campaign escalates we will consider upgrading card and box materials and potentially adding a custom die, whilst still being faithful to our aim to make a simple, compact and affordable product.
All pledge levels involving the game as a reward will benefit from any stretch goals that we implement.
This being our first Kickstarter, we've allowed some padding in our timeline to account for the inevitable unpredictabilities of worldwide shipping and fulfillment. So, bear with us and know that we'll be working our 'Basic Socks' off to get Canine Kleptomaniacs to you just as soon as we possibly can.
Once we've finished tinkering with the artwork, the game files will be whisked off to our manufacturer to begin their journey into the big wide world.
- August / September - Finalising of artwork in readiness for production
- October / November - Print production
- January / February - Distribution
- March / April 2020 - Your doggy treat arrives!
This is a cautious timescale based on manufacture in UK/EU and we're hopeful that we can bring this forward, but we don't want to make any rash promises.
If you like the idea of hoarding Golden Y Fronts and Li'l Jimmy's Nappies, or raiding the Master's Bedroom and tucking into some tasty toe nuggets; if you nod knowingly at the thought of unleashing the power of the Fishy Blast and if your blood runs cold at the prospect of being left holding the Poo Pizza, we're pretty confident you're not alone. In fact, we're certain that there are plenty of other people out there who would love to get their paws on the game.
Mr Squirrel implores you to support our campaign so that together we can create a lasting legacy of joyful doggy (and squirrel) related silliness in the world!
Risks and challenges
Matt's work / career path as a museum designer / project manager has involved dealing extensively with design and print, and co-collaborator and wife Jo has given up her part time teaching job to focus on delivering this project.
We have sought detailed quotations from various manufacturers so that we have as accurate a picture as we can of the various possible scenarios, ranging from small-scale print run to an 'only-in-our-wildest-dreams' scale print run. We've also thoroughly explored the costs and logistics of distribution with a number of different fulfilment companies versus doing it ourselves. Whatever the outcome, we're confident that we will have a solution in place.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
