Caning: A public art presentation involving decorating one's lawn with large, plastic candy canes. Designed to be passed from one yard to another; may induce large grins, fits of laughter and/or fists being shaken to the sky.
The first act of Caning occurred on a Wednesday night in December, in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. Mike Eppes, Tony Hutchison, and several eager teenagers of the church loaded themselves with dozens of canes and set out into the night to have their first CaneVenture. With wide eyes and pounding hearts, they tiptoed quietly across the lawn of their recipient, leaving a plethora of large, plastic candy canes in their wake. Though the act only took five minutes, the memories and excitement left a lasting impression.
Caning is a variation of an activity known as flamingo flocking. Flamingo flocking typically occurs by acquiring the pink flamingos used in garden decorations and staking 10-50 of them in someone's yard during the dead of night. The next morning, the recipients awaken to their own personal flock of flamingos and experience shock, awe and laughter. They have been FLOCKED! Many community organizations (such as bands, church groups, sports teams and schools) employ flocking as a means to raise funds for their group. CaneVentures takes the foundations of flocking and adds a fun and exciting new spin that is perfect for the upcoming holiday season. Flamingos may be bright and colorful, but Caning a family's yard with 100 candy canes during the Christmas season will make a spectacle so delightful that they'll almost want to leave it up. For those who enjoy the unexpected, Caning in the summer brings an amusing juxtaposition of candy canes and sunshine. Either way, recipients will be left with smiles on their faces, and merry CaneVentures will be had by all.
How Kickstarter Fits with CaneVentures
CaneVentures' partnership with Kickstarter is meant to share our vision of Caning with the world, showing how fundraising can be productive, joyful, and memorable. The end result of our campaign will be a video compilation of CaneVentures that have occurred all over the country; the best part is that it features YOU, our wonderful donors. It is easy to say how much fun Caning is, but we want you to experience it for yourself. When you pledge to help our Kickstarter campaign, you will receive your own Canes and an e-book detailing the foundation and advanced tactics of Caning. All we ask in return is that you document your CaneVentures through pictures and videos and send them to us. We will compile all materials to create a video called "CaneVentures: A Season of Caning!" When compiling footage of your CaneVentures, please be as creative and unique as possible. Want to Cane dressed as a group of ninjas or secret agents? Great! Feel like being festive elves while decorating with your Canes? Excellent! We love individuality and color. Just remember to keep everything family appropriate and clean, with no profanity, violence, or obscene images.
Please note that the more you pledge, the more screen time and promotion you will receive in our video. Pledges of $425 will guarantee that the donor's name will appear on the screen of the video. Pledges of $725 will guarantee you 25 seconds of screen time, as well as your name on the screen.
How Caning Works
In our ebook, CaneVentures explains our proven system that we have used to fundraise thousands of dollars. You may begin by following the simple guidelines upon which Caning is based. However, as you gain more experience, you will find that there are many different ways to develop a build-up for your company. Those strategies include holding auctions for Caning rights, and allowing insurance (we call it Canesurance) for people who prefer to have their yards decorated differently.
CaneVentures believes that Caning is beneficial because it allows for an interactive experience between your organization and its community. Once a family has been Caned, they will appreciate that they have been gifted with a unique experience and a lasting memory of their contribution to the group. The story can be retold, bringing a smile to everyone's face. It is a distinct impression of belonging to the community and of participating in a ritual that affects them one by one. Additionally, the recipient never has to worry about clean up or damage, as the CaneVenturers will return to pick up the display. One recipient added how he was able to form relationships with neighbors he had never met. The neighbors were curious about the strange spectacle of candy canes, and it began conversations that may not have occurred otherwise.
The members of your organization will also benefit through participating in an adrenaline-packed bonding activity. They will develop exciting memories and fond relationships, while still fundraising.
An even bigger benefit for your company is the cost and efficiency of candy canes vs. flamingos. Caning is more cost effective than flocking. Pink flamingos may cost an average of $10 a flamingo, which can add up to a cost of around $500 for only 50 flamingos when buying in bulk. As a comparison using our pledge system, Canes are less than 1/5th of the price you would pay for flamingos. For example, our lowest pledge point including Canes is $50 for 25 Canes, whereas it would be about $250 for 25 flamingos. Flamingos are also bulky and difficult to haul from Point A to Point B. The simple, streamlined design of our Canes allows for easy transportation and less space being stored.
