Vitality Magazine - Issue 2
Vitality is a lit mag full of awesome stories featuring lgbt+ protagonists, where the focus of the story is NOT their sexuality/gender.
Lesbian fighter pilots. Transgender sorcerers. Nonbinary rock stars. Asexual interstellar explorers. Demiromantic goddesses. Bisexual detectives. Gay gunslingers.
Vitality is a literary magazine filled with entertaining stories of all genres that feature queer protagonists. We include fiction and poetry that center around LGBTQ people doing great things - saving the world, solving mysteries, finding their magical soulmates...The possibilities are absolutely limitless. And every single one centers around queer people.
We also created a FREE minizine that you can download to get a taste of what we're about.
But we need your help to create our second issue!
Your donations will go directly towards making Vitality happen. Our next issue is slated for July 2015, and we hope to make it about 60 pages long, filled cover to cover with fiction and poetry all centered around a positive portrayal of queerness.
With your support, we will be able to pay our writers and artists a fair, industry-standard price for their work. This will encourage quality writers to submit to the magazine, and support queer artists, enabling them to produce even more great work.
We will be able to publish 60 pages of brand new, never-before-published LGBTQ poetry and prose.
We will be able to print a quality, perfect bound issue. This will make the issue more long-lasting. It will look and feel more like a paperback book.
If we are lucky enough to meet our goal of $6,500, we have prepared the following stretch goals:
- $9,000 - the second issue will be 100 pages instead of 60
- $11,000 - the second issue will have black and white/sketch illustrations for up to 8 pieces
- $14,000 - the second issue will be printed in full-color and have illustrations for up to 16 of the pieces
- $16,000 - we will be able to produce another free minizine and also publish a few smaller collections of pieces during the time between issues
- $22,000 - we will be able to fully-fund a 60-page, black-and-white third issue
Here is a handy chart to help you figure out the reward levels:
- $100 - also gets a 1/6 page ad
- $150 - also gets a short piece of original fiction written for them (but does not get any ads in the magazine)
- $300 - also gets a 1/3 page ad
- $500 - also gets a full-page ad
To download our sample minizine, go to our website! Our second issue will be along similar lines, but with loads more content.
$150 Level: I (Jesse, senior editor) will write a piece of original short fiction, at least 1,500 words, based on a prompt/plot bunny you provide. You can specify the characters names, genders/sexualities, and a general idea of the story/scene, and I'll write the rest! (NOTE: I have the right to refuse rude/offensive prompts. Prompts must be PG-13 rated and fit the spirit of Vitality.) These stories will be available for free to Vitality readers via our website and blog, either before or shortly after the second issue comes out in July. (I retain the rights to these pieces, so if you have an idea you would prefer to "own" yourself, this isn't the reward for you!)
Ads : We will work with you to create your ad to the best of our ability. We have the right to refuse offensive or rude ads, or ads that violate the spirit of our magazine. (To see ads we created for previous backers, please click here and here. Please note: all art on these was provided by the contributors.)
Stuff packs will include two different 4 x 6" postcards and one 2 x 3" magnet. Art featured will be a variation on the Vitality logo and slogan - "Queer stories are vital."
Example postcard/magnet design:
**NOTE: NOT FINAL ART. JUST AN EXAMPLE**
Each pack will include four 1.25" round buttons/pins on a nice card backing. One button will say "ask me about my pronouns" and the other three will be variations on the Vitality logo and slogan - "Queer stories are vital." We are still working on the final art for the buttons, but want to guarantee that one of them WILL say "ask me about my pronouns" as that is something we've heard a lot of people ask for.:)

Due to backer request, we are now offering add-ons. If you would like, add an extra amount on to your pledge to receive the following:
- $15 - Extra physical copy of Issue 2
- $5 - Extra stuff pack
- $5 - Extra button pack
- $5 - Digital copy of Issue 1
- At this time we can't offer physical copies of Issue 1 because there is a very limited number left, and those are currently up for sale in our store.
Please shoot us a message saying you've added an add-on to your pledge, because there's no real official way to track them in the end-of-project surveys. Thank you! :)
Risks and challenges
Working on the first kickstarter taught me a lot about what is actually necessary to complete a project like this. We pulled through the first one and learned a lot of valuable lessons that will help us to make this second issue a success. I've posted about this to Vitality's blog - the links are posted just above this section.
As far as challenges, the number one challenge of any magazine is how to get readers interested in what you're publishing. I feel that we offer something unique - it's just getting that into the hands of the people who are looking for it that is challenging. We have a strong presence in social media and hope to use that to connect with readers.
The best proof I have that the Vitality team is capable of creating a second issue is our first issue, also funded by Kickstarter. We've already done this once, and we're ready and committed to doing it again! :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
