Love & Bubbles - A Romance Anthology Under the Sea
Eleven love stories featuring mermaids, water spirits, alien oceans, and so much more!
Love & Bubbles is a collection of short stories of underwater romance. The characters range from classics like mermaids and selkies, to creative interpretations on the theme that take you to the Amazon river basin, alien water planets, and an ice-crusted lake.
We put out a call for love stories of all gender pairings and styles, and were surprised to discover the bulk of our submissions featured lesbian couples. Of the eleven base stories featured, eight feature relationships between queer women. We considered going ahead and focusing this anthology solely on queer women, but... I think you'll agree the three stories featuring queer men and straight couples are well worth the uneven distribution of pairings!

Lead editor on this project is a demi-bisexual, bigender writer and editor. Circuits & Slippers and Vitality Magazine are er most well-known projects, but e also writes Polycule, edits Spectrum Lit, and lot more on er Patreon. When not managing fifteen projects simultaneously, e spends far too much time on twitter (@thewritingj) and cuddling er dogs. More of er work can be found at JayleeJames.com.
Jennifer Lee Rossman
Our assistant editor is a science fiction geek from Oneonta, New York, where she cross stitches, watches Doctor Who, and threatens to run over people with her wheelchair. Her work has been featured in Circuits & Slippers, Spectrum Lit, Expanded Horizons, and Cast of Wonders. You can find her blog at jenniferleerossman.blogspot.com and Twitter @JenLRossman.
The Kickstarter ends on March 8th at 11:59 pm, Central Standard Time. Until then, you can look forward to author spotlights from our contributors, with teaser descriptions of what each story is about! Plus, announcements of the bonus stories as we approach unlocking them.
We also plan to have a Twitter chat on February 19th, from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm Central Standard Time. Meet the authors, ask them questions, and get excited for this lovely underwater anthology!
If we are successful in our Kickstarter, we will begin the process of editing and assembling the pieces. Every story has already been written, but preparing a book for print still takes time!
Love & Bubbles will be released during August 2018. Backers in the US will receive their copies of the book before it goes up for sale. (International shipping times can't be guaranteed.) Non-book rewards will ship at the same time and should arrive together.
If there are any delays to this process, we will keep you well-informed!
When you back Love & Bubbles, you get all kinds of awesome treasure!
Ebook and physical copies of the Love & Bubbles anthology!
This is what you came for, right? Ebook copies will be available as DRM-free .mobi, .epub, and .pdf files. Physical copies will be softcover, 6x9" books, with cover art from the same designer from Circuits & Slippers (Najla Qamber) , so if you have both volumes, they will match very prettily on your shelf.
Ebook and physical copies of the Circuits & Slippers anthology!
Love & Bubbles is the spiritual successor to the collection of science fiction fairytales we created in 2016. It's currently available on Amazon, but as part of this kickstarter, you can get copies of it at a discounted price in order to support our newest anthology project!
Circuits & Slippers contains 20 stories, and will be available as a .mobi, .epub, or .pdf ebook file, or a 325-page softcover, 6x9" book. The two anthologies will be similar in design, from the same cover artist, and will look beautiful on your shelf as a set.
Set of Two Pinback Buttons!
[NOTE: DESIGN NOT FINAL]
Here's an example of what the pinback buttons will look like. The design will be ocean-themed, super shiny, with slogans voted on by you guys! Some ideas for slogans include:
- I'm a sea monster
- Mer do it better
- Get in the sea
- Creature of the Deep
If we reach our stretch goals, we will have two different designs instead of just one.
Your Name in our Thank You School of Backers!
We're so grateful to everyone who supports this project! For those contributing a little extra, we'll print your name on a cute fish in our little school of thank you's in the book! For those who are extra generous, we'll make your name much larger, on a bigger sea creature hanging out with the fish, like a whale or a narwhal or a squid. (Ability for you to choose your animal is subject to the limits of our artwork, but we'll do our best to accommodate!)
Need a breakdown of each reward tier?
We've created this handy-dandy chart for you to make sense of the reward levels and what you get in each!
The large hearts in the lower tiers indicate that your name in the Thank You section of the anthology will be a lot bigger than the rest!
FYI: There is no significance to the colors of the hearts or tiers - it's simply to look pretty. :)
If we are incredibly lucky and meet our base goal of $6,500, we hope to achieve the following stretch goals. Each goal raises the pay rate for our writers, plus adds an additional story into the anthology!
If we meet our first stretch goal of $7,250...
- Author rate raises from $50 to $75 a story.
- All authors will receive a free physical contributor copy.
- One bonus story will be added to the anthology (this will be announced the closer we get to reaching this goal!)
If we meet our second stretch goal of $8,500...
- Author rates will increase from $75 a story to 3¢ a word (a 5,000 word story would be paid $150).
- Several illustrations, custom-created by Maggie Derrick to fit the stories in Love & Bubbles, will be included!
- One more bonus story will be added!
If we meet our third stretch goal of $9,850...
- Author rates will increase from 3¢ a word to 4¢ a word (a 5,000 word story would be paid $200).
- Two different button designs will be created instead of just one, and all backers whose tier includes the buttons will receive one of each design.
- One more bonus story will be added!
Other stretch goals will be announced as we get closer to reaching them. Each goal will include raising the rate for authors and adding another story to the anthology - other details are yet to be decided. :)
Risks and challenges
Creating an anthology is a difficult process! It relies on a large team of people to coordinate, get along, and meet deadlines, which is a lot more complicated than it sounds. There are numerous setbacks that can occur with designing the final book and getting it ready for launch.
But I've already done this once, on my own, in 2016, with Circuits & Slippers. You can check out the book on Amazon using the "peek inside" feature and see the standards of quality that I have for my anthologies.
This time around, I will have the funds necessary to pay my authors the rate they deserve. I also have an assistant editor who is just as excited about this project as I am, and will keep me from having to do this alone.
I have also already successfully completed a Kickstarter for another literary project - Vitality Magazine - in 2014. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing when I started Vitality. I learned *a lot* about what works, and more importantly - what *doesn't* work. For example, we had a one-month delay for Vitality due to an issue with printing - it turned out we had miscalculated the margins and the entire magazine needed to be redone.
Those kind of "live and learn" lessons are what make me confident I can make Love & Bubbles as amazing as it deserves to be. I hope you'll support this project - we've got some amazing stories that you will absolutely love. Trust me. ;)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
