Hi, we are Candy and Nick, a mummy and daddy who believe that children should be offered more in a magazine. Uninspired by what is currently available to children, we’re setting out to make a magazine that taps into a child’s creative, adventurous and caring spirit.
I AM GOODY is a quarterly magazine for girls and boys aged 6 - 12 years old that dares to be different. It is inspiring. It is beautiful. It is unique. GOODY is creating and celebrating goodness.
We want the best for our children. We want to offer them more than our own experiences. When we’re searching for reading material, the first thing we look for is quality. Is this offering my child the best? Magazines are able to do something that books can’t do: they can blur the boundaries of fiction and nonfiction. A well-designed magazine manipulates text, imagery and typography to produce work that is easy to read, entertaining and current.
Why is it that we adults can make beautiful, well-designed magazines full of inspiring stories and incredible imagery for ourselves, but when it comes to magazines for our kids, it’s either visual chaos, explosive advertising, or stuck in gender stereotype-land?
Is not the way we present a magazine influencing a child’s perception of the world?
Is not the content we provide influencing a child’s perception of the world?
What if we were to say that children deserve more in a magazine?
That they deserve to be inspired. To be challenged. To be treated equal.
Kids can do incredible things. Isn't it about time someone reminded them?
We want children to be inspired beyond the ordinary, to see things in a new light and be excited about getting out there and just doing good. That’s why we’re stripping our magazine from all the chaos and unnecessary distractions, and filling its beautiful uncoated pages with the things we love.
- I AM GOODY is a celebration of art, design, culture, food, animals, the environment, adventure, music, stories and games.
It is 100% original content.
On top of our super interesting child-friendly editorial pieces, we’re working with incredible artists from all around the world who will be creating things just for GOODY! Each issue, we’ll be commissioning an amazing artist to create a one-of-a-kind I AM GOODY cover.
Lullatone, Peskimo and Andrea Kang will be inspiring kiddies on a more regular basis, filling each issue with:
If there's one thing we've learned about children, it's this: characters make everything awesome! No matter how fun or clear the writing is, children aren't going to want to read big bodies of text. See all the cute animals on this page? They, and many more, will be your child's new best friends, pointing out interesting facts, telling jokes and just being incredibly cute.
- I AM GOODY is creating goodness through good ideas, good stories and good people.
I AM GOODY is not just about looking great and being incredibly fun to read. To do good, we cannot shy away from important issues that really matter. We want to reconnect boys and girls with topics that matter because the stronger the connection, the greater the goodness. We’ll explore conservation, environment, social and humanitarian issues that aren’t discussed enough in school. We’ll meet inspirational heroes and learn how we can all make a difference.
GOODY for all ages.
If this all sounds like something that you (a grownup) finds interesting, that's okay! One of the main things we want to do with I AM GOODY is create inspiring and engaging material that all ages can enjoy. We want to create something that parents will happily sit down and share with their children. We want to break down the literary divide and create opportunities for further discussion, for wonder, for participation. Because we know that when you surround yourself with goodness, good things happen.
Fashion and beauty tips. Buzzy colors. Ugly design. Aggressive products. Millions of ads. Basically, all the yucky stuff we don’t like in virtually every other children’s magazine.
Anything we DO feature is there because we believe in it.
It’s no good creating something that isn’t loved. We will be filling GOODY with environmentally friendly uncoated paper and covering it with beautiful art, fun activities, incredible photography and inspiring stories.

Oh, so much!
If you support only one Kickstarter project this year, this is a pretty good one to choose. When you support I AM GOODY, you are not just supporting the one project. You are not even supporting the one creator.
Firstly, you’ll be directly supporting the contributing artists involved in GOODY. We’re incredibly fortunate to know so many talented people who want to be part of GOODY and offer their skills as regular contributors and feature artists. With your support, we’ll be able to fairly compensate our amazing contributors for their time and effort.
The minimum we’ve set here is not about making a profit. If we reach the minimum target and no more, we satisfy the printer’s minimum order and can ship these to you. There will be money to pay our contributing and feature artists, Kickstarter fees, and that’s it. We have not factored in our time writing, editing and designing, illustrating, overseeing production, packing or sending Goody away. But that’s okay, because this isn’t about us making a quick fortune. We’re doing this because we honestly and truly believe that children deserve more in a magazine.
We’re really excited about this project and see it as the first step towards us starting up an independent publishing press, dedicated to quality children’s work. In fact, if we raise more than our minimum target, this is exactly where the money will go.
We want GOODY to be a leader of inspiring and unique publications, offering something that can’t be found elsewhere. We want to grow a Goody community and share experiences that make a difference. We want to give back and support and create community initiatives that children can be part of. We have big plans for GOODY.
Would you like to be part of something special?
What about subscription?
Originally we did have subscription as an option (subscription is definitely what we need in order to continue creating inspiring material) but then we did some math and realised our target would then have to balloon out to over $100K AUD as we'd have to assume minimum fixed costs for a whole year. That amount seemed too much to ask for straight away. What if we didn't reach it? Then Issue 1 wouldn't even get made. That would be too sad to even contemplate. So, whilst we will have subscription available in the future, we unfortunately cannot include it as part of this Kickstarter campaign.
As if infectious energy and creativity wasn’t enough, we’re also pretty good at making things. Before we settled on our love of children’s publishing, we designed and manufactured consumer products and collectible toys, including our awarded Pecanpals and Jibibuts wooden figures, under the name Noferin. Our art and sculptures have been exhibited in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Chicago, Toronto, London, Sydney and Melbourne, as well as being published in many books and magazines. We also had a stint at developing a children’s animation series based in the UK.
Having designed products and marketing material for over a dozen international brands, Candy now enjoys designing for NGOs and is very proud of designing and art directing the cookbook, Planet to Plate, for WWF and Earth Hour. Currently, we are editor and designer of Submerged Nation, a diving magazine we helped start four years ago. In our spare time, we write and illustrate children’s picture books.
We want to use the primetime of our career to create something that really matters; to start something that is beyond us and our own personal advancement. I AM GOODY is just the beginning of this journey, but we think it's a pretty good place to start.
For printing this initial run, we’re keeping things local. Local is good. It is quick, friendly and we have more control. Using our ten years design and publishing experience, we’ve teamed up with a local printer specializing in magazines and books, who said, “Too easy, mate. We’ll have that turned round to you in a jiffy. Fifteen days tops.” Local not only lowers our carbon footprint, it also means we get called mate. How good is that!
We can't do this without you, so to show our appreciation for your support, we've put together a little swag of rewards. A note on rewards: our priority here is getting the magazine produced and sent to you before Christmas. Whilst we will try our utmost to have the rewards arrive at the same time, time may not allow us. Most of these rewards are hand-made, and whilst Candy will be full of supporter love, her hands can only move so fast. For this reason, it is best to assume that rewards will arrive in early 2016, separate from Issue 1. Thank you for your patience.
Risks and challenges
For over ten years we have designed products and printed material, seeing them through from concept to finished product, and for more than ten years, we have consistently delivered ahead of schedule. We’re used to handling impossible tasks but thankfully there is nothing impossible about Goody. Even if there was (there isn’t), we’d still be able to complete this project on time because it is something we love and dream about, and everyone knows that when you are chasing something you love and dream about, you will let nothing get in your way to success. Except cuddles. You can always stop for cuddles.
You may recall that we’ve already planned the next year’s content.
Well, Issue 1 is looking in even better shape! We’ve got art, text and everything else all ready to go. Our iMacs are humming with encrypted data anticipation. Our contributing artists are at the blocks, waiting for the call to action. Nothing can stop us!
If we are successfully funded in September, we will deliver Goody in time for Christmas. With a delivery this important, Santa might even help us - we’re certain to be on the good list!
* Rewards will be the only thing Santa can't help with. Please expect rewards to arrive in early 2016.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
