The Candylab coats often daydream about the myriad of cool cars out there. About the adventures to be had, people to meet and about feeling the road gravel scrunching under our All-Terrains.  So many stories to tell, and so little time. Therefore, after our last round of designs, thoroughly enjoyed by our backer tribe so far, we figured we wanted to ahem, change gears a little.

So we made the Drifter.

It's a gorgeous off-roader that we affectionately called The Drifter, and just looking at it we think of riding in a caravan across uncharted jungles, or plowing through sand dunes with primitive machines, no GPS and nary a fresh, clean sock in sight.

...................................................................................................................................................

We’ve always wanted to go rallying.  Exhilarating, dangerous and intoxicating.  And while we haven't crossed that off our bucket list yet, we think a little homage to that spirit is in good order.  And what better way to bring this to reality than share it with our most loyal fans, under the banner of exclusivity that Kickstarter's make/100 brings?

Each comes with a hand signed and numbered label and the underside has an engraved "coin" celebrating this special edition.  This color / livery / artwork combo will not be available for retail after this campaign, ever again.

But we didn’t stop here: the special box will sport a unique sleeve and each box comes with a custom designed patch, so you can add it to your off-roading apparel and map some awesome memories to it.

Lastly: we are going with seriously collectible packaging, all part of a new label that we affectionately call "House of Candy".  If you got yourself a Rare Bird in the last campaign, you may have noticed the HOC logo down on its belly. This new packaging is the next level.

We are making only 100 of the design launched here.  However, if we do sell out the first hundred, we will make another 100-piece round, but in a different color, and a distinct livery.  Each round will be unique in its own way.

And, importantly: Made in USA.

UPDATE :

Captain's log, 1800 hrs, January 31, 2017: Our backer core tribe has spoken, and the "First100" series is now gone.  We are adding the next design as a new reward level, also 100 pieces only.  Our Nigel depicted below:

The Drifter is made from real, solid Beech wood, with steel pin axles, ABS plastic wheels and safe silicone tires for that bouncy effect. We finish it all with water based paints and a clear coat.  They are all hand cut, hand painted and painstakingly assembled right here in the USA.  And since we launched, you guys have been churning though our limited edition batches, so we have to keep making unique designs.  An overview below.  Keep in mind you can:  A) NOT get more than two on a single Kickstarter account.  Hint.  and 2) Manage your pledge until the campaign end, so if you see a new design you like better, you can switch. For more info such as tank capacity, floor mats or underproofing, please contact your local Candylab Dealership.

Our last campaign had a dual purpose, one being to beef up our production abilities here at home. And the Drifter is another step in that direction: Prototypes are done, accessories on the shelf and we're ready to build this.  There is no complicated tooling to make this time – we chose to use the knobby tires created for our brand new Pioneer. Shipping schedules are always tough to predict without knowing exactly how many pieces we'll be producing - but we will be able to start in April.  Depending on how many we have to make, we may hold off on shipping until all are ready, then get them all out at once, in a matter of days. ...................................................................................................................................................

 ...................................................................................................................................................

For this high-value item we will use UPS for all US-based backers and skip US mail. And this campaign will see ALL our international backers upgraded to DHL. A couple of important points:

- If your parcel sits unclaimed and / or you have not answered our increasingly alarmed emails, there is a chance it will be sent back, or abandoned at destination.  We would not be able to resend your reward nor refund you in such a situation.

- As these are each numbered, unique items, we can offer no refunds.  If your truck arrives damaged or somehow defective, we will replace it.

- International backers will likely be charged customs fees or sales tax - even both at the same time!  It's infrequently enforced, depending on each destination country and we really can't help this nor control it, but remember that essentially you are acquiring these items with no VAT or sales tax.

...................................................................................................................................................

So there you are. We are making this boxy wheeler to remind you of past or future adventures, and wish you keep it on hand on your mantle, desk, or occasionally show the young 'uns what a desert rally is all about.

Risks and challenges

While we ran and delivered 3 successful campaign so far, wrinkles still may occur. But having executed and shipped numerous designs so far, from limited edition runs to mass produced items has allowed us to map the minefield and avoid early common mistakes.

Worst case scenarios will now translate in perhaps a delay or misdelivered packages in the international mail system, which we can swiftly address.

We have prototyped, and planned all the steps required to produce this in a limited run. Our past Rare Bird editions were a more difficult metallic paint finish and we have delivered them all to their respective owners.
