A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
About this project
Born Right Here on Kickstarter. And we are 4 years old now.
Soon - August 12 - we will be celebrating our 4th Kickstarter Birthday; which means by now we are able to feed ourselves, rarely need diapers and are old enough to play with wooden toy cars!
And the way things sometimes work out, what better way to mark that anniversary than being a proud part of the exclusive launch of Kickstarter Gold.
We'll use that excuse to put a new twist on some of our MVPs:
We created a new set of exclusive designs, and we are launching them through KS Gold. We're telling a few stories through this, and we'd like to take you along, savvy car collector or curious spectators. Watch here as this unfolds.
All the toys we're designing for this anniversary will come with a special gold pin underneath, and a special packaging sleeve, marking this a memorable event.
As part of Kickstarter gold, we've released our inner 80's child. And age be damned! Because when you're born is not relevant; if you dig this vibe, you'll know who Sonny Crockett or Buford T. Justice are.
Drum Roll Please
First: Our most legendary.. Legend.
We distill cultural automotive icons into toy design, but sometimes we, um, exceed the originals. If we may say so ourselves. Case in point:
The Gold and Black livery paint is something new for us - and not easy to pull off, but boy we’re excited. The inspiration is drawn from late 70's and early 80's TransAm's and Firebirds: pure rebellion, brutal engines and total awesomeness. The manufacturing bones are derived from our Ace racer, itself inspired by mid 60's Barracuda - proving that elegant proportions and a great stance are universal and timeless.
Second: Woodie Redux
That's right. The Woodie is back. Boxier and more wood paneled than ever, with a mintier paint job and a whole extra wood panel on the rear gate. Electric Green Surfboard included, because Miami is calling (*).
Third: Airstream Camper
Not just A Camper. This is an officially licensed Airstream design, and yes, we are beside ourselves. We treated it with the importance it deserves and added a touch of Candylab Magic. Voila:
This Camper has a new pressed sawdust shell, a natural finish beech wood floorpan (not unlike the real deal) and a redesigned, elegant shape. The Silver paint is safe and tested in CPSIA* - accredited labs.
Fourth: The Ghost.
This is our homage to obscure art liveries, camouflage inspired, retina-unfriendly patterns. Our way of recognizing and telling the story of amazing art that lived on a race car shell and got all beat up at the track, instead of a cushy gallery career. Ballsier than Warhol and just as fleeting as a cactus bloom. We love and respect them.
This is a Redux of our classic Stinger going back all the way to Campaign #1- same body, but a different and unique skin.
Unspool your turbo.
We get this question all the time. Why is this the Candylab design language?
The answer is always the same: Because storytelling needs some props, and the right hints can compete better than a lot of hyper realistic detail. Because we get butterflies when seeing the correct proportion, stance, or windshield rake, something reminiscent of a real car with personality. An era long gone.
Because whether you are a hard core enthusiast with an extensive collection of real cars or just someone with a passing interest in car aesthetics, we hope our designs speak to you.
We provide the hints, but it's ultimately all about your own imagination.
The Candylab Crew.
Risks and challenges
While we've done this a few times by now and are getting progressively better, there is always a new lesson to be administered. The worst case scenario is delivering a little later than our safe date.
That being said, our new designs utilize the same woodworking parts as the rest of our current manufactured items; same goes for wheels, tires, pins and most of the packaging, significantly reducing the risk of unknowns popping up. No tooling, moulds or engineering to make, this is all about the artwork and the paint jobs.
The famous classic, now in a boxier 80's vibe.
With real veneer-paneled sides, and a magnet embedded in the roof, it comes with a surfboard that snaps onto it. This car also features a magnetic tow hook - allowing it to hitch to our equally awesome trailer - see reward below.
An inseparable pair, the Woodie and Airstream are like spandex and big hair. In fact, you may want to reenact a searing asphalt road trip complete with a real 80's playlist, whether you were around back then or just discovering that culture now.
