A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
We at Candylab have been creating standout wooden toy cars for over four years. Born on Kickstarter, this is our 6th campaign, and we are now back, faithful to our roots: Our latest creations will ONLY be available here, on Kickstarter, for this Holiday Season, reserving a special thank you and exclusivity to our backers, who helped us grow to where we are today.
Here are our latest creations, and may they spark your imagination. Go play!
The Outlaws are 1920's-inspired, vintage wooden cars. We took cues from a mix of Art Deco modernism and the daredevil, rough and oily car culture of those years. In our era of clean, immediate digital entertainment, we want to bring some of these stories back, blending keen design, old-fashioned playtime and some storytelling.
Our exclusive launch will feature five models total, and each has its own story and inspiration behind it.
This is inspired by the iconic American Truck - a newly mechanized workhorse during the late 20's and 30's. This truck powered small businesses, construction and rebuilding projects, rumrunning, dustbowl migrations and post recession rebuild. It's ingrained in the pioneering spirit and hardships of that era, and we say it deserves a place in pop culture.
The toy itself has a yellow and black herringbone pattern on the front radiator, a long bed to haul other toys, and a magnet "hitch" making sure the towed cars stay in place.
Our slickest, lowest riding racer. Stanced, bright blue, and decorated with a Carnival-inspired pattern, it flaunts a superstition-defying race no. 13. This is our flashiest car, with stories to tell.
A yellow-and red pill of a lowriding roadster, bearing the 250(mg) race number. Our first ever open-top car, sure to stand out in a toy collection.
A black matte coat of paint, a single red light arm placed sideways, and a scribbling of the precinct numbers on its roof: this is the epitome of the churning and drama of bringing law and order to those hard years. The toy carries the visual cues of an adventurous, free wheeling era: it stands for order, fierce car chases and keeping the lid on the bad guys. The car has a cute graphic on its belly, with tally marks that one assumes stand for the vanquished baddies.
This an homage to the fierce female race car drivers of the era. Maude Odell, Elinor Blevins, Kay Petre and many more others. Their racers were sturdy, lifted, and off-roadish and we aimed to capture that look and stance with this toy. It has a spare tire, a positive (inward) suspension camber and a giant race number on its radiator.
So thats's what we've been sweating over all year folks!
[Update]: The good Folks at CBS This Morning just gave us some sweet national TV thumbs up. They totally nailed what we are all about. Here they are visiting us at home and telling the world about it. Million thanks to everyone there!
Shipping these rewards will be via either UPS or Priority US mail as appropriate, for all US-based backers. A couple of important points, especially if you are an international backer:
- If your parcel sits unclaimed and / or you have not answered our increasingly alarmed emails, there is a chance it will be sent back, or abandoned at destination. We would not be able to resend your reward nor refund you in such a situation.
- We can offer no refunds. If your set arrives damaged or somehow defective, we will replace it.
- International backers will likely be charged customs fees or sales tax - even both at the same time! It's infrequently enforced, depending on each destination country and we really can't help this nor control it, but remember that essentially you are acquiring these items with no VAT or sales tax.
But where are we with this process?
We started production a little while back to ensure our December delivery, but we need your help to make sure we can hit the MOQ counts our suppliers have to meet.
This is where you come in: with your backing, we can make sure that we have a home for these beauties, and for our end of the deal, we will ensure exclusivity: this Holiday Season, no one else will have access to these outside this campaign!
So for a truly special gift this Holiday season, hop on our bandwagon.
Thank you from all of us!
Risks and challenges
This is our 6th (SIXTH) Kickstarter Campaign. With hard work and tough lessons, we learned what it takes to develop, make and deliver toys, especially around the Holiday Season. For this run, we have already started production, paid for tooling and resolved the myriad issues that typically appear in launching and making a new line of toys.
While absolutely nothing is 100% foolproof in this world and even pigs can fly (with proper gear of course) we are feeling pretty confident that you will have these snugly in your hands come December time.
Pick this level and after campaign ends you get your pick from any one of 4 cars: Belle, Harlequin, Sheriff or Penicillin. A solid break from future retail, whenever we decide to let them out into the public. Comes with timely holidays delivery.
Try your hand at outrunning the cops with this pack - two sheriff cars and two outlaws. And you can pick your final Outlaws selection post campaign: you will pick ANY 2 Racers to go with the 2 Sheriff Cars. A nice 4-pack for a nicer cost.
