THANKS FOR CHECKING OUT OUR PROJECT!!!!
"The Popes of Placeland"
Candid Emphasis Productions, with help from Sonic Bunny Productions, is in the midst of creating a brand new cartoon series aimed at teens and adults entitled The Popes of Placeland. And with the backers from Kickstarter, we hope to raise $2000. This money will be the first step in helping us fund our trailer for this project. The trailer is going to be the key component when we pitch our idea to networks this upcoming year.
The series takes place in the world of Anomie, a world torn not by good and evil, but by Order and Chaos. The story revolves around three outcast that hail from a small orderly town called Placeland. Our three protagonists, Tote, Anton & Tako, are unexpectedly thrust into a position of power as the new Popes of Order. Their job as the new Popes is to try and bring order to all the chaotic towns throughout Anomie, as well as maintain Order where it already lies. Watching over them and guiding them along the way are the former Popes of Order, The Land-Pope, The Sky-Pope & The Sea-Pope, as well as the Only-Pope, who is the manifestation of all order in the Universe. On the opposite side of the spectrum is the always chaotic Anti-Pope, whose goal it is to see every last inch of time and space festering with chaos. He and his minions, who are an extension of himself, are constantly causing and distributing havoc anywhere and everywhere.
The Main Characters
Tote: Tote is broken soul stuck in a monotonous day job. He's short tempered and manic depressive. The one person that always seems to brighten his day is Gigi, Placeland's zookeeper, who's a little off her rocker herself. He's always wanted to make a name for himself and show the world he's not worthless, but he lost sight of that somewhere along the way. Now that Tote's a Pope, his leadership qualities are emerging, and maybe he's a natural born leader after all...
Anton: Pretentious. Rude. Pompous. Conceited. These are just some things that Anton thinks he is NOT... and if you were to spend ten seconds with the guy, you'd find that he is quite wrong. But what Anton lacks in character, he makes up for in creativity. He's unique and lives his life through the expression of his art. And underneath his hard shell is an emotional, quiet soul that's confused about his place in this world. And maybe now that he's a Pope, he can realize his true potential as an artist...
Tako: We all love Tako! He's friggin' adorable! He's bubbly and full of energy, always ready to make you smile! Tako just wants to have fun, fit in, and help whoever is in need. He's considered one of the happiest citizens in Placeland. Unfortunately... he's also considered one of the dumbest. But being granted a Pope might just unlock the secrets needed to show the world that Tako could possess one of the most valuable minds in the universe.
Our reasons for creating this show are pretty simple...
We wanted to create something that was epic with a really interesting storyline and characters with depth and an arc throughout the series. But at the same time we didn't want to take ourselves too seriously. We wanted our series to have the same insanity and goofiness that the cartoons we loved while growing up in the nineties had.
We also wanted to create a show for teens and adults (and hopefully kids if the parents are cool!) that was at the far opposite end of the spectrum of most current shows aimed at that demographic. Constant swearing, crude humor and trite nostalgic references doesn't make up for good writing. Hopefully our show can captivate the minds of an 18-35 year old audience without making them feel like they're watching a kid's show.
Another goal of ours can be found in the character design of our heroes. Our hypothesis is: since our three main characters have an incredibly simplistic design, it will lead to more fluid frame by frame animation... which in our opinion is more aesthetically satisfying than most of the blocky cartoons out today.
Lastly we want to pay homage to everything that's inspired us along the way. From early animations by Fleischer and Iwerks to contemporary innovators like Genndy Tartakovsky and John Kricfalusi, it'll be known that they were an inspiration when watching this cartoon. But animation isn't our only influence, expect great music and film references throughout the series as well.
But most importantly, we want to make our audience happy! If you're not satisfied at the end of the day, we did something wrong. So all feedback is appreciated!
