About this project

THE RESIDENCY

Campos de Gutiérrez is a young international artist residency program located in Medellin, Colombia. The residency is housed in a 19th century coffee plantation in the outskirts of the city. For decades, this plantation was the axis of development in the area, and after a stagnant stage in the early 2000’s the house is being slowly transformed into the premises of our organization.

WHAT IT LACKS

Currently, our organization needs help in creating more specialized studios to fulfill the production requirements of artists in certain fields. Campos has an infrastructure to host up to six international residents at a time, and in affiliation with five other cultural centers, it has successfully assisted past residents with the production and showcase of their projects. However, our facilities are still deficient and we are working very hard to improve them. Due to the natural resources available and the setting of the residency, it is a practical step to start our physical expansion by constructing an outbuilding that will host a ceramics studio and provide space for additional three-dimensional work.

WHO WE ARE

Parul Singh • India • Ceramist and resident at Campos.

Andrés Monzón-Aguirre • Colombia • Painter (RISD 2009), sculptor and director of Campos de Gutierrez.

Amara Abdal Figueroa • Kuwait/Puerto Rico • Current RISD Architecture student working on spatial development at Campos.

Special thanks to Norma Figueroa for her consultative expertise as a ceramist and architect.

STEP ONE, KILN AND OUTBUILDING

We will begin and base the assembly of this studio around a fuel-efficient wood-firing kiln. With the help of the research undertaken by Parul, one of the present residents, future participants will be able to find, collect, and work the different clays mined locally. The work created from this earthenware will then be fired in the kiln with collected forest wood from within the complex. The result is a hands-on experience with the clay processes, as well as a direct contact with Colombia’s land.

The kind of kiln we are planning on building is a fast fire downdraft kiln, which should take about 4 to 5 hours of actual firing time and thus prove to be fuel- efficient. This will cut down the firing time and wood supplies used by nearly a third of any updraft kiln of the same size. If required, the kiln can fire various kinds of earthenware, stoneware and even porcelain. Our intention however, is to experiment with local wood ashes for glazes on the clay procured locally. The idea we call Maati, meaning clay in the Sanskrit language, expands to assimilate all kinds of ceramic approaches but in particular focuses on developing regional resources and in time come up with our own ceramic culture. We are in the midst of sampling local clays bodies, cultural and anthropological motifs and of course the building of the kiln, which lays the foundation for this research.

COLLABORATIONS

A team of anthropologists and archeologists from the University of Antioquia has been helping us with our research material and collation of data. These collaborations take within its purview the historical and cultural needs of the project as well as the archival requirements of the program. MAATI seeks to make ceramics as a discipline more viable in terms of resources, both elemental and technical.

The aim of the residency program in Campos de Gutiérrez is to become a catalyst for a discourse between rural and urban as well as traditional and contemporary polemics. The 10-hectare terrain and its proximity to the city center allow the residents to participate in a variety of processes that incorporate nature, society, and history. The abundance of natural resources in and around the property has also initiated a research and practice of creating a more workable environment.

The process of spatial rehabilitation at Campos de Gutiérrez arose from the need to revitalize the cultural and historical past of the region while coalescing them with contemporary artistic practices. Since the establishment of Campos de Gutiérrez in August 2011, the organization has been an active body in the local art community and has seen continuous participation from the international.

BE A PART OF MAATI
