Do you remember your last air mattress experience? Oh boy, do I remember mine.
It took forever to inflate. I missed the sunset and had to make dinner in the dark. Before crawling into bed around midnight I had to re-inflate because of air chill and science, but still woke up at 5 am in an air-mattress-taco with the full weight of my slumbering girlfriend against me. Cold. Sore. Grumpy. I'm an avid camper and, like most campers, I've clearly developed a deep hatred for air mattresses.
The alternatives? One option is the self-inflatable – typically for back country hikers and not very comfortable.
The other choice is foam. Foam is good! It’s reliable, never pops… your bed at home is likely made of foam.
It's a bummer foam is just too big for camping... UNLESS, of course, you vacuum-pack it.
We're here to give you the most reliable sleep you’ll find in a camping bed. CompREST is designed for the Outdoor Bed Marketplace targeted at car, music festival, and base campers.
CompREST is NOT ideal for backpacking or hiking trips, but most hikers still practice car camping for more comfortable weekend trips.
Here's how it all goes down.
You wake up well rested on your last day at camp and take down is a breeze. Fold it, seal it in your vacuum bag, and CompREST packs your bed up for you at the touch of a button, to 20% of its original size.
As for set up time... What set up time?
Setting up your nap nest has never been easier! Simply remove the bag and your bed is made.
Step 1: Remove from bag.
Step 2: Adventure time!
Luxurious foam made convenient for the first time ever.
It all starts with the right foam. We knew we needed foam that was guaranteed comfortable, but we also needed to ensure our foam could pack up small yet still maintain integrity and shape when out of the bag.
After a lot of lying around (on foam, of course) we landed on one with the perfect density: a cross between supreme comfort, give, and resiliency. We’re especially stoked that this perfect foam is formed only a province away in beautiful Vancouver! Not only are we supporting local Canadian business, we also get faster delivery times.
How comfy is it?
We have more reward details and instructions at the bottom of this page. Make sure to take a look at our Add On Menu.
What about the pump?
It sucks, trust me.
The true innovation (and the muscle) behind the CompREST system is our rechargeable vacuum pump.
Vacuum pack your bed, pillows, clothes, bedding, and even food. You’ll end up with extra room in your car for more important things! Like a friend, your dog, or another flat of beer…
7 ½ x 3 ¼ x 5 ½ inches. This little thing is a featherweight champion, weighing only 2.6 lbs.
CompREST’s RECHARGEABLE lithium-ion batteries will do 20 compressions on a single charge, and can be recharged using a 110V American (2-prong) wall charger (included). A simple LED indicator demonstrates charging status. Red means charging, green means good-to-go!
Did we mention it can charge your phone?
"These Li-ion batteries ARE GREAT! How else can we make use of this excess energy?"
Bingo! Your CompREST pump also acts as a portable power bank for your phone or other USB device, offering 5V and 1A of power. The pump is capable of fully charging a Samsung Galaxy, from dead, at least twice.
Friction Fit, press on nozzle.
The CompREST nozzle is specially designed to fit securely on the valve - you don’t have to babysit. Set it and forget it (for a few minutes, at least)! Use this precious time to do other camp take-down tasks – like packing up your bag or enjoying that second cup of coffee.
The design doesn't stop there.
So far, almost 100 people have slept on CompREST and we've had hundreds of people lay on the product at trade shows. The response is always overwhelmingly positive, AKA "Ahhhhhhh, ya. That's nice."
Our testers have provided us with valuable input regarding appearance, functionality, necessity, and ease of use. We have used this input to develop the whole CompREST experience into something that is enjoyable, intuitive, and aesthetically pleasing – an experience that will have you wondering how you ever managed before CompREST.
This ain’t your mama’s camping mattress!
Throwback to those huge, yellowing, fragile foam mattresses that used to embody camping in the 1970s. Kinda gross, right?
Well we’ve experimented with fabrics to create the ideal protective, machine-washable cover for CompREST.
The top of the CompREST cover had to be breathable, comfortable, functional, and offer some traction for your sleeping bag. Most importantly, it had to allow airflow for vacuum packing.
We chose Lycra for its feel, its ability to be one with the foam, and its resistance to dirt and dust. Wipe away the small stuff or throw in the washer for a heavier duty clean – no worries!
For the bottom we chose coated nylon with ripstop, rated to 15 psi to prevent your bed from absorbing tent spills and sneaky puddles.
CompREST is a proud supporter of “the more the merrier”. We designed CompREST to Velcro together infinitely to accommodate your significant other, your child’s slumber party squad, or your whole extended family! From a single serving to the California king, it’s your pick.
And CompREST is almost as good a floor as it is a bed. Putting on pants in your tent has never been a simple task, until now.
Don’t worry about disturbing your tent-mate’s sleep! Remember, you are sleeping on foam, not a giant balloon. Air displacement is nothing to worry about!
When she moves, you sleep. When he snores, well....
1-way valve for those of you who suck at the quick-draw.
No more rushing to get the cap on!
CompREST pump ran out of juice? Plug it in and use your vacuum cleaner instead!
This guy is a hero! The CompREST carry bag functions as a protective barrier between your vacuum-packed bed and the outside world. It keeps your bed compressed even on the off chance your vacuum bag seal isn't as tight as it could be. The entire vacuum-packed bed weighs 4.5 lbs and the shoulder strap makes it a cloud-like carry.
CompREST over board? A vacuum-packed CompREST stays dry until bed time.
CompREST has been a labour of love for over 2 years and we are proud to say that, in this time, we have avoided the great misfortune of a weekend away with an unreliable inflatable. The only logical next step is to bring this high-quality reliability to you, you weekend warrior, you outdoor adventurer, you hospitable homebody, you! If you have or will ever use an air mattress, CompREST was made for you.
We’re stoked to be showcasing CompREST through the power of Kickstarter.
By launching now, our mission is to have the first production run delivered to all backers for June 2017.
Every backer helps.
We hope you'll join us for some comfy adventures!
To pre-order CompREST, click the button below and pick a reward that fits. Simple as that. If you want more stuff that isn't included in your reward, please follow the instructions in our Add-On Menu below the rewards section. Once you have pledged, sit back and relax. We'll collect your shipping/fulfillment info when this project is complete in November.
Want to add additional items to your reward like an extra CompREST bed or vacuum pump? Maybe you want to add on extra vacuum bags so that you can compress your pillows and clothes! Either way, adding stuff to your reward is easy:
1. Choose a reward level.
Everybody must choose one (and only one) reward level to back this project. You cannot choose 2 reward levels. Just one. You will get all items in that reward—you cannot swap things that you don't want for things that you do want.
2. To add something extra, check out the Add-On Menu.
If (and only if) you want to include something additional to your reward, check out the Add-On Menu above. If it's in the Add-On Menu, you can add it to your reward by increasing your pledge by the amount specified in the menu. You can only add things to your reward that are in the Add-On Menu. Make sure to choose the price that corresponds to where you live. Please note that the prices on the Add-On menu are in Canadian dollars.
3. You're done for now!
All details like shipping information and add-on specifics will be collected via survey after this campaign has ended in mid-November.
Thanks for checking us out and don't forget to share this Kickstarter page to help us bring CompREST to reality!
Thank you 1000 times!
Risks and challenges
This is our second run at Kickstarter after learning some very valuable lessons from the first time around. We thoroughly expect to succeed this time. We have plotted and planned to the best of our abilities. We have an excellent team assembled. Nevertheless, we've learned to expect the unexpected and have budgeted extra time accordingly.
(YES, that includes accounting for manufacturing and shipping slowdowns over Chinese New Year!)
Some potential challenges we could face...:
1. We've 3D printed a few handfuls of components and are happy with the look and functionality of the pump so far. In our situation, 3D printing has its up and downs. The disadvantage (when compared to injection molding) is that it's much slower to produce each part. However, we are putting in time designing for faster print cycles.
There are 3 advantages working with 3D printers:
(a) 3D printers are the main reason we could lower our Kickstarter goal.
(b) The design can be improved at any point throughout the production run.
(c) We are able to scale up by buying or leasing 3D printers as we need.
2. International shipping can always prove to be a challenge. There can be delays of two to three weeks if shipments are tagged for customs exams. We promise to always keep you up to speed! Communication is key!
3. Our vacuum bag supplier recently switched their valve design so that they can make it cheaper. This recent change doesn't meet our design standards and we need to find a new supplier. The good news is there are many to choose from and therefore it shouldn't be a problem that affects our backers.
Aside from all that...
We’ve teamed up with a supply chain management company who has helped 3 other Kickstarter projects: Fortifiedbike, OMC and Supermechanical. They will be helping us with logistics and quality control. They’ve visited 4 factories for us so far, and will continue to do so during production.
We have planned to go to China personally to perfect the build process, as well as implement quality inspection points. We are prepared to visit China several times before our estimated delivery time to ensure the process is running smoothly and our quality targets are being met.
Our prototypes are ROCK SOLID and it’s important that all of the CompREST products follow suit.
We will be posting videos, pictures and more to keep you updated regularly. You can definitely expect to be notified of any significant changes.
