Update: wow, you guys really made it happen! With your gracious support, we've hit our initial funding goal with a few days left to go. We're humbled by the positivity you have shown us, and can't wait to get Catmandu built for you!
For anyone still thinking about helping out, it's not too late. Your additional backing will make the structure even better!
If we get to $9,000, we can trick out our nighttime lighting effects. Currently, only the platform edges are highlighted with strips of controllable LEDs (in addition to spotlights on the ground), but additional funding will outline the entire structure. This will really enhance our nighttime profile so kitties can find their way home!
Anything over $9,000 will go towards more playthings- an extra trapeze hoop or yoga swing, some new holds for the climbing wall, additional hammocks, and more!
For us, these next months will be slammed with hard work finishing the project, but it'll feel great knowing we have your support. Thank you so much for having our (arched cat) backs! Meow.
The Full Story:
Hi. We're the Catmandu Research Institute. We're building a 3 story carpeted cat tree at Burning Man 2013 to lure back our Giant Alien Cat Overlords*!
On the off chance this doesn't cause their return, our structure will delight humans with climbing, lounging, scratching, staring, and other fun feline activities. With your help, we can get it out to Burning Man and make it awesome to play on!
Here are the prospective features:
- A large platform on the second story for dancing
- 3 sheltered pods for the sleepy kitties
- Carpet everywhere, so kick off your shoes
- Hammocks (yes, hammocks!)
- 12ft bouldering wall for active cats
- Climbing ropes and handholds
- Trapeze hoop (get your acro-cat on!)
- Sound sensitive lights that react to music from passing art cars
- Great views from the second-story platform and upper areas
- Good vibes and great smiles!
Our dedicated crew of "scientists" started this project in January and have been very active. We've already built most of the parts and are moving into a full size warehouse in June to put everything together! We get to spend the next couple months focusing on all the finishing details like installing hammocks, setting routes on the climbing wall, and adding nets and ladders.
Our funds will be dedicated entirely to getting Catmandu out to Black Rock City, while ensuring safety (third?) and fun:
- $2500 - Renting a 24' Box Truck and gas
- $2000 - LED spotlights, tape lights and lasers
- $2000 - Additional building materials, such as metal reinforcements and lumber
- $1000 - All the good stuff, like hammocks, trapeze hoops, climbing walls, and more! Oh, and a few boxes of catnip.
Help us bring those cats back!
Risks and challenges
Since we've already built the framework of Catmandu, our biggest challenge is reinforcement. We're working with a structural engineer to ensure safety in playa conditions. Once we finalize our reinforcements, we will do a couple of test builds.
There is a possibility that we will need more time or supplies to finish the secondary elements (lighting, play things, etc), or if the framework needs further modification after our test builds. We have given ourselves an extra 2 months to make sure we have plenty of time for unforeseen changes, setbacks, or additional fundraising.
*Finally, despite our use of Giant Alien Cat Overlords as a tongue-in-cheek fictional element of humor, there's a risk they actually exist and this structure really will lure them back. We take no responsibility for their actions if this occurs ;)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
