About this project
Who are these people?
Hi there! We are Jason and Danielle, and we think children ought to know why they believe what they believe and that Christian faith is reasonable. Danielle graduated with a B.A. in Art, and Jason has a B.A. in Psychology(both of us minored in Biblical Studies), an M.A. in Organizational Leadership and is now working on an M.A. in Christian Apologetics: all from Biola University in Southern California. We’ve been married for quite a few years and are eagerly awaiting the OK to bring home our first son from Thailand!
What is this picture book about?
This 32(ish) page, full-color picture book features brother and sister duo James and Ruth, who meet a grumpy wild pig that challenges their understanding of the universe and God’s creative work. Throughout the story, the children learn to think carefully about what they believe and why they believe it as their father teaches them how to defend what they know to be true using the Kalam cosmological argument, common sense, and Scripture. The illustrations are all 100% original and hand drawn using ink and Prismacolor pencils and are filled with intriguing little creatures and characters. The pages in the back of the book even have further resources and activities related to the story!
What are Christian Apologetics?
Apologetics are basically arguments in defense of beliefs, so Christian Apologetics is about giving a defense for our Christian beliefs. God’s creation, Jesus’ work on the cross, the reliability of the Bible, and so on, are all defensible beliefs held by Christians, and apologetics are a wonderful tool for believers to use to defend what they believe.
Why should I support this project?
Most apologetics resources today are geared toward adults, but we believe that our children are capable of understanding and benefiting from apologetic arguments. We see a precedent in the Bible for raising up our children in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6) and have witnessed the tragic result of ill-equipped children with shaky beliefs entering the "world." By creating apologetics resources -in this case, picture books- for young children, we hope to instill confidence and understanding from an early age.
Through an interesting story, understandable language, colorful illustrations and solid teaching, this picture book will encourage deep conversations, help you equip your children with faith-strengthening Christian tools, and enable kiddos to defend their faith with confidence from an early age.
How is the book coming along?
So far, the manuscript is completed (critiqued by professors, parents and children aged 5-11), the illustrations are nearly finished, the book design is well underway, and we are working with CrossBooks to determine publishing, marketing and distribution options. We are so excited to see the book in its final stages of creation, and have been thrilled to hear about how the rough draft copies used for feedback have already led to deep conversations about God between parent and child, and have even emboldened children to ask questions of non-believers!
We can’t do this without YOU!
Your support will cover the costs of publishing, marketing, distribution of the completed book, and fulfillment of the rewards, PLUS it will cover the 10% fee from Kickstarter and Amazon. Your money will ensure that this useful and engaging book will wind up in the hands of the next generation of faithful Christians. What could be better than making that happen? Plus, there are some pretty sweet rewards in store for you! Just look at them over to the right! You’ll get an actual, full color awesome copy of the book starting at a $25 pledge!! You could receive original artwork, a Skype reading of the book with Q & A or even reserve the right to determine our NEXT Picture Book Apologetics topic!
What happens if we don’t reach our goal?
If we don’t reach the goal by August 30th, none of the pledged money is collected and the book’s completion will be much much much more difficult to manage. Without your support, marketing and distribution will be prohibitively costly and the odds of this book getting into the hands of a wide audience of inquisitive young children will be much lower. Let’s band together and keep that from being a reality!
Thank you for coming out to support this project! Whether you are pledging money and receiving a copy of the book(Woohoo!); spreading the word on Facebook, your blog or Twitter; talking to your friends; or taking the time to pray that this would spread like crazy and inspire a renewed interest in the great God who made us…we are SO thankful for you!
Let’s DO this!
Risks and challenges
Since we anticipate the book being easily completed by the end of the Kickstarter campaign, *finishing* the book is not the sticky bit. The risk we face using CrossBooks (and this is true of any publisher) is not having physical copies of the book ready to be mailed to you, our generous backers, by the date we have promised. In an effort to be ready for this, we are prepared to make the first run of the book through another high quality self publisher as a special Kickstarter exclusive run that will arrive at your door by the appointed time. As with all works-in-progress, this will be an adventure, but our priority is to make it a pleasant, timely one that ends with a beautiful, high quality book.
Our goal is to have the book and your rewards to you as soon as possible, and Lord willing, no later than the early December deadline(we wouldn't want to ruin Christmas gift plans!).
We will keep you posted on progress with regular updates, so, there shouldn't be any major surprises!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
