ALONE ON THE WORLD STAGE
"I'm in the family business now and it's fireproof as we grow away and pass on through!" (from Fireman Snowman)
Dear Friends and Family,
Thank you so much for checking out my Kickstarter page! I'm excited for this opportunity to share what I've been manically working on for the past year. It's been a challenging and ambitious project; a full length record of solo songs called Alone On the World Stage. That's right- just me with a guitar or piano like playing for friends in your living room. No extras; just honest, raw and soulful songwriting.
The efficiency and economy of writing a solo album was perfect for me at this time in my life after moving from Baltimore to Michigan to start a family. Now I have a beautiful 10 month old daughter named Genevieve and a batch of twelve new songs that I've been writing during her sleeping hours. I can't wait for you to hear them!
There was a huge learning curve playing solo and writing songs that can carry without any added instrumentation, but it's been an invigorating process that has forced me to become even more critical of my writing, improve my guitar skills and stretch my voice to new emotional heights. It's all been an exercise of courage building and there have been many artists who have inspired me throughout the ups and downs of writing from Nick Drake (Pink Moon) to Japanese Butoh dancer Kazuo Ohno and Danish filmmaker Carl Dryer (The Passion of Joan of Arc). Less is definitely more at times.
I've heard it said that the ingredients of creativity are experience, observation and imagination and the lyrics on this album reflect this. Songs like Ultrasound and Fireman Snowman describe my own personal journey into fatherhood but the majority of my lyrics/narratives came from my own imaginative way of seeing things and commentary on human nature, politics and relationships.
You are probably reading this because my music has communicated to you in the past and that is so incredibly powerful and meaningful to me! My hope with this album is to create music that will not only touch you personally but can reach a larger audience. What this means is marketing, professional packaging, an updated website and most importantly- a very polished recording.
Here is what your contribution will go toward:
$2,000- Production, Recording and Mixing by the wonderful Peter Fox at Stone House Recording in Grand Rapids, MI. Stone House Recording Studio is constructed from quarried limestone from the Grand River and is one of the oldest houses in the city. It is also the home of the Halfway House Sessions. I plan to record in an intensive four day session from May 8-11
$800- Mastering by the legendary Bill Wolf who specialized in acoustic music and has served over 600 clients including the lengendary Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris. Bill also has the ability to master on analog tape machine and then convert the files back to digital, giving it that smooth, tape sound.
$1,060- Album photo shoot, Album art design and website update by the incredibly talented Janessa Rae VanOeffelen. Janessa did the album artwork for my last project Without the Sound of Violence and I'm looking forward to working with her again.
$1,200 -Album Packaging/Printing. I'm hoping to purchase packaging that includes the lyrics as that is an essential part of my songwriting. CD's may be going out of fashion but I still think there's nothing like being able to read along while listening. It forces you to slow down and experience the record as a whole, which is how it's intended it to be heard.

Risks and challenges
Alone On the World Stage is a vulnerable and ambitious project. I am hoping to record the album in four days (Thursday - Sunday) with the expectation that I will be doing complete takes without overdubs. I prefer to work in this way because I am able to give my undivided attention to that particular moment in time and the recording will benefit musically from a more "LIVE" treatment of the songs. Plus, I have a 10 month old and a full time job :)
Without your contribution, this project will not be possible. We simply do not have the personal resources to give it the attention that it deserves. Plus, the way that Kickstarter works is that if we don't raise 100% of our goal, we will not receive ANY of the money. Creating a new piece of art is almost always risky which is one of the driving forces that makes it so worth it!
I am very committed to these songs and their performances and I'm confident the music will speak to your soul!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
