Camden Love/Hate follows six teenagers from Camden, New Jersey as they document the story of their city from the glory days of the postwar boom to today's violent and fraught reality. The teenagers learned film-making skills at a last chance high school, CCYD, and use their newfound skills to express complex feelings about one of the most dangerous cities in America. From a white minority left behind in the 60's to rampant drug tourism, to active community leaders, we see both the beauty of Camden as well as the parts that feel abandoned. Through the lens, the students become aware of a history they never knew and a future that looks at turns hopeful and bleak. The money raised from the kickstarter will go to finalizing post-production, sound, graphics, film festivals and grant submission.
Risks and challenges
A few years ago, when we began working on Camden Love/Hate, we asked six high school students from Camden, New Jersey to join us in a journey that would become a full length feature documentary. It was a journey that, if undertaken, would not be without risk or challenge. They would risk revealing their innermost thoughts and personal struggles. They would be challenged to be authors and filmmakers, telling stories of their city through their own eyes and with their own voices.
These six students accepted the challenge wholeheartedly and joined us as partners on Camden: Love/Hate. On this journey they uncovered stories of their city’s bittersweet and oft forgotten past; they would develop a more critical understanding of Camden's social and economic struggles and their own personal struggles as they face them in the present. Finally, they would come to re-imagine the possibility of the future, for Camden and for themselves. Through this journey, they would become historians of their own city, advocates for their own community, and authors of their own lives. In return for their acceptance of this challenge, we promised not to quit on them, nor on this film. This kickstarter (and you!) can help us keep our promise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
