Sovrano, A Handmade Game of Strategy & Cunning (Canceled)
Capture objective spaces, earn points, and lead your emperor to the throne and victory! Sovrano is handmade with 100% wood components.
Sovrano is an abstract strategy game made with 100% wooden components. Each aspect of Sovrano was meticulously designed and everything is handmade; many hours and a lot of care is put into each and every game in order to make sure the final product is amazing! We are very proud of Sovrano and excited to share it with you!
Sovrano is a game for two players. It is a straight-forward and easy to learn game of strategy and cunning. However, beneath the relative simplicity lies a depth of complexity that will keep the game interesting and re-playable.
The object of the game is to be the player that scores the most points by capturing one or both of the tower-spaces located at opposite ends of the middle row. Players must also protect their emperors and attempt to move them to the board’s center space – the throne. Each player has 1 emperor, 8 guards to protect him and capture towers with, and 2 archers that supply support fire from a distance. A typical game of Sovrano will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
Check out the video below to learn more about the rules and how Sovrano is played!
Each game includes the game board, 22 playing pieces (11 per player), 30 point counters, and the rulebook.
The Sovrano rules can also be found in PDF! Here!
"I had an absolute blast playing Sovrano. I hope that you won't look at it and think "It looks too simple." It's not. I hope you won't think "It's just a smaller game of chess." It's not. It's stress-inducing, anxiety-causing fun made from a tree..." - Thomas at 2to4players
"... it doesn’t entirely feel like any game that’s on the market, or at least none that I’ve played, which is very good! The strategy game market is going to have a strong contender with this game!" - Airk Doehlman
"It’s a game with depth not that of chess perhaps, but in the realm of Camelot and International Checkers, both classics, so mark this one worth grabbing, and just maybe you will discover something special." - Calvin at First Comic News
Sovrano Deluxe includes storage drawers on both sides of the game board. Each drawer is large enough to hold all of the game pieces as well as the point counters. Sovrano Deluxe also features designs cut into each side; the game stands 4 inches high and will be made with oak.
Sovrano is the premiere game of Cambium Games. Sovrano is handmade with 100% wooden components (the point counters and rule book being the exception, of course) and we hope to be able to continue producing original games that are produced the same way.
The game was designed and developed by myself - Nick Chira - while all of the woodworking is completed by my father, James. However, we are both involved with all aspects of final production (sanding, finishing, quality assurance, etc).
We plan to produce the game board with cabinet-grade birch, oak, and walnut plywood. This keeps production costs and the final cost of the game lower for our fellow gamers! It also means there will be considerably less worry about a board warping. No one wants to have a game arrive to their house warped or find that - two days after arrival - it doesn't sit very flat on their table. This also means that customers will be able to choose between wood and the final color of their game board. The pieces will be made of hardwood lumber, matching your board. Each game will be unique, as all wood and grain are slightly different.
We need funds in order to produce Sovrano and spread the word about its existence. Cambium Games is meant to be a father-son business and Sovrano is to be hand-made, not mass-produced. This means we need funds for materials (wood, stain, finish), as well as funds for tooling.
It should be noted that the images are of the prototype boards and while the designs are final, some small tweaks may still be necessary. This would mostly effect sizing of certain aspects of the game and pieces, but nothing noticeable. For example, the shield on the guard piece may need to come down 1/16th of an inch, or the emblems on the pieces may have to be put on one side rather than both.
Risks and challenges
Sovrano is the first project that we are undertaking as Cambium Games and the only project that we are currently working on. Being that Sovrano is hand-made and made entirely of wood, there is room for error. Tooling could break, a computer could crash, pieces or the board may not cut properly, etc.
Fortunately, James (the woodworking end of Cambium Games) has over 30 years of experience in woodworking. He knows the ins and outs of the tooling, how to fix things, and above all he is the hardest working man I will ever know. And as most of the challenges would likely present themselves in the production of Sovrano - there is no better person to have in his position.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
