Out of view of the high art world and the hip gallery scene comes this heartening story of unlikely partners in Middle American communities working together to reexamine their histories, celebrate what makes their towns unique, and imagine their futures in the form of monumental community murals. This film is part road movie, part inspirational small town drama, and part art documentary. Working in conjunction with Mid America Arts Alliance's "The Mural Project," this compelling story follows Kansas artist Dave Loewenstein, on a three-year journey around the heart of the US, helping to reignite a sense of civic pride and creative possibility in places often overlooked. Called to Walls is a thoughtful and uplifting film that leaves viewers not only admiring the serious work and good will of these artists, but also with an itch to go out and do it themselves.

As one can see from the trailer, production of the film is well underway, but we need your help. There are six states included in the Mural Project. With two completed so far, we still have a lot left to capture! Our introduction to the Mural Project began in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, as assistant muralists. Gaining firsthand knowledge of the community process, we recognized the potential power of this experience and expanded our roles as painters and organizers to include documentary filmmakers. Each mural location entails a three-month filming production that parallels the research, community meetings, design, and mural creation. This saturated engagement allows for time to build meaningful relationships, become involved in the community, and gather otherwise impossible footage. After our wonderful experience in Tonkawa, Oklahoma we began work on a second project site with a great group of folks in Newton, Kansas.  We are currently filming at the Mural Project's third site in Joplin, Missouri and are working hard to capture the stories of this community while enjoying its gracious hospitality.

While contributing to the overall genesis of the film, the money pledged through Kickstarter will realize our production efforts in Joplin. It will also allow us to return to both Tonkawa and Newton to collect follow-up interviews and to begin transcription of many, many, many hours of footage. Our projected budget for the entire film is $200,000.
