In a world where bubbles and meat can be worn as clothing, I long for more simple style of dress. From flapper to rockabilly to hippie, Hollywood created some of the best fashions ever worn. Think of Audrey Hepburn’s little black dress, or Clara Bow’s flirty scarves, or Marilyn Monroe’s sexy white gown. There is a reason why these fashions keep coming back into vogue; because they are simply beautiful.
In this project I want to honor some of Hollywood’s most fashionable ladies, from the silent film era to the flower power days. Fashion changed so much during this 50 year period, and yet it remained the same in its mass appeal. Even today, there are Pinterest and Tumblr accounts dedicated to the looks of these women, and Etsy accounts where you can buy vintage clothing. To me, it’s not enough just to look at these pictures. I had to go out and recreate the looks myself.
I want to make a coffee table art book showcasing these amazing women and their incredible fashion sense, but with a modern twist. Instead of just using old pictures of the ladies themselves, I gathered a group of women who remind me of the celebrities and recreated the looks using similar outfits that were created by current designers to look vintage. I like to think of it as a marriage between now and then.
But why create a book instead of a website? This is a question that I get a lot. I am a firm believer in tangible goods, something that you can see as well as hold and smell. This book is a throwback to the days before the internet, and I want to preserve that feeling. I want this project to be as real to you as it is to me. I want this book to come alive in your hands.
So anyone out there who enjoys fashion, or worships these famous women, or even people out there who just applaud creativity, I hope this project speaks to you. Donate today to help bring it to life. Thank you!
Risks and challenges
There is no real downside if this project does not go through. I will have amassed clothing, since I have already begun shopping, and there will be a lot of disappointed models out these who were looking forward to portraying their favorite icon.
I do hope this project gets funded, because they aspect of creating art using fashion is hugely appealing to me. This project is mostly about expressing myself creatively. Having people check out my website is an added bonus, but after last year’s photo shoot, I realized that I have a passion for this type of hobby.
If there seems to be an interest, I will love to open an online store to sell the clothing in.
