NOOK - a WWII Ghost Story (Hardcover Graphic Novel)
A family escapes WWII Germany only to discover their new home on the border of France is haunted by a dark past and a cat named Nook.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Thu, April 4 2019 3:00 AM UTC +00:00.
3/14 - Dan Fraga Stretch Goal Added!
Once we hit $7,500, every Nook physical backer will be getting an amazing print by Dan Fraga. He’s a busy guy, so we won’t the artwork up for another week or so, but I can assure you it will be fantastic.
If you aren’t familiar with his work, I implore you to go check out his Instagram @couchdoodles and twitter @fragaboom. His art will blow your mind, and I can’t believe he’s contributing to Nook!
Fleeing the oppression of WWII Germany, Avery and her parents move to a remote town on the border of France. It is here she finds her new best friend, a cat named Nook. But, there is more to this cat than it seems.
Avery is swept up into a deadly cycle of violence, and she will come to both fear and love her fuzzy new friend as the dark and twisted history of her new home is revealed.
This story is a culmination of demented dreams, family history, and my love for Guillermo del Toro's style of storytelling. From The Devil's Backbone to Pan's Labyrinth and Crimson Peak, I love the way he uses ghosts and mystical creatures to create an atmosphere of terror to reflect deeper meanings and develop tragic stories. I'm always intrigued by stories that appear to be scary on the surface but have many more layers and meanings.
Nook is inspired by these stories, and I hope when you experience it you will discover that there is much more to this little tale than meets the eye.
This will be my 9th comic Kickstarter. Over the past 3 years, I have funded Part 1 of Nook, 5 separate issues and a Hardcover trade of my science-fiction series, Alter-Life, and 2 issue of my buddy-roadtrip-zombie-superhero series, ZED.
The Cycle Repeats
This book has become very timely and universaly relateable. It explores the cyclical nature of human tragedy and how we are doomed to repeat the past if we cannot learn from it.
Marcelo and I started work on this book through Patreon about a year and a half ago. We had no idea how timely the story would become. This is the tale of refugees and survivors; families torn apart by violence, greed, and hate.
Sadly... the cycle is constantly repeating in our world.
(A Friendly Reminder: credit cards are not charged until the END of the campaign and ONLY if the project is FULLY FUNDED, so please pledge early to help us build momentum! You can always adjust your pledge before the end. Oh, and domestic shipping is always FREE for my books!)
If we can crush our goal, I will announce stretch goals that may or maynot include: pinups by some truly talented artists, vinyl stickers, and book quality improvements!

Why Back Us?
Springboarding off the success of Part 1, we have decided to jump right into a complete trade. (Nook Part 1 was funded in 13 hours)
Artwork has been underway since the start of the year, and will will have it 100% complete by the end of this campaign. So, rather than string you along for anohter 2 issues, we thought it would be fitting to bring you a beautiful, hardcover edition of the complete Nook story.
This 100 page, black and white, hardcover trade will include Parts 1-3 of Nook as well as some conceptual and variant artwork.
Funds raised here will be used to cover the print cost, production of rewards, shipping, and final phase of artwork for the book.
Any surplus funding will go to increasing the quality of the print and the production of additional copies of the trade and stretch goal rewards.
I think the quality of my books speaks for itself. I will be using the same printer I used for the Alter-Life complete trade which you can see samples of below.
Nook Part 1 was extremely successful, and I hope we can do the same thing here. The faster we fund, the more cool free things we will be able to add as stretch goals.
Free 15 Page Preview
As a vote of confidence in the story we are creating, here is a preview of the first 15 pages.
Alternate Timelines Reward
If you back at the $55 reward tier, you also get my mind-bending sci-fi hardcover graphic novel, Alter-Life.
What is Alter-Life?
What if death is not the end but merely the beginning of infinite possibilities? In Alter-Life, all things are possible, and death is but a moment in existence.
Alter-Life is a tragic tale of a man named Jake. An average guy who has dreams of becoming a writer, but is down on his luck, and recently went through a traumatic event that took the lives of both his wife and daughter.
Reeling from the loss and ready to give up on his dreams and his existence, Jake decides to take his own life. Through this action, he discovers that he cannot die, again and again he returns and every time he does, the world around him is slightly different.
This is a tale of love and redemption. An everyman learning to live with his regrets and confront the demons of his past. Jake is lost in his infinite lives, searching for the meaning behind all of his existences.

A 188 Page, Hardcover Special Edition of the complete 5-issue series of Alter-Life. It will include conceptual artwork, variant art from all of our other Kickstarter campaigns, a 5-page sci-fi short, and some sweet script to panel process pages.
Where does the money go?
All of the funds raised here go right back into the project. Below is the breakdown in chart-form. Funding goes directly into paying the artist, printing the books, and shipping them to your door. Any additional funding raised beyond the $7,500 needed will go into improving the quality of the books and producing sweet stretch goals for all of you fine backers.

Risks and challenges
Risks are minimal. We have worked hard to bring a timely, beautiful story to life here. This is my 10th Kickstarter and I have worked with everyone involved in the project before, so I know we can meet all the deadlines and get your rewards to your doorstep as soon as possible.
There are a lot of moving parts when putting a book together, and there's always a risk that production could hit a snag somewhere along the line, but you can rest assured that this book will be amazing, the artwork will be completed by the end of March, and we will do everything we can get you your rewards quickly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
