My name is Caleb King, and I am an illustrator living in the Chicago area. You may not be familiar with me or my work, so to give you an idea of my visual style and approach to image making, I have included some examples of my work below.
The images above are but a few of the watercolor paintings that appear in my book, ICONIC. Each painting is 5.5" x 17" in length. The narrow image size accentuates each painting's unique aesthetic.
ICONIC: The Art of Caleb King is a collection of 50 curated paintings from the past three and a half years of my work. Here's the best part: the book is already completely assembled, proofed, and ready for print. That means as little downtime between the end of the campaign and when you're holding that book as humanly possible. In addition to the book being print-ready, it will have these key features:
- 14pt matte finish cover, with a spot gloss finish over the image and the type.
- 105lb matte finish internal pages.
- 50 full size individual images, each measuring 5.5" x 17."
- A perforated top edge so that images may be easily removed from the book and framed, or kept together with the rest of the collection. The choice is yours!
- A dedicated area inside the book for an original sketch to be drawn (sketch optional).
My funding goal is $5,500. That figure covers the cost of printing the books and the shipping charges to get them to my door. There's no additional padding added to that number. I want these books in my hands, so I can get them into yours. Any funds raised on top of that funding goal is merely icing on the cake.
I have outlined two initial stretch goals for this project, but will definitely add more should the project far exceed my expectations:
- $6,500: Unlock a new watercolor painting exclusively for this campaign. All backers who pledge $35 or more will receive the signed print.
- $12,000: UPGRADED PAGES: The internal pages of the book will receive an upgrade! We'll take the already lovely 105lb matte finish paper and upgrade that to a beautiful watercolor paper.
For those of you who love original art (and come on, who doesn't?) I have created a few tiers that include three levels of original art in addition to the book. Each of these tiers come with a signed copy of the physical book, as well as a sketch, a custom 4" x 10" watercolor drip-style painting, or a 6" x 12" watercolor drip-style painting.
ORIGINAL ART TIERS
Want one of the original paintings featured in the book? Each of these tiers is a one-of-a-kind item, and once they're spoken for, they're gone! Each tier comes with the original watercolor painting in their respective tier, as well as a signed copy of the book, and the kickstarter exclusive print.
I have always been drawn to icons. If they're done correctly, they communicate immediate information that would take words much longer to do.
As a developing artist, I fell in love with watercolors. Watercolors are chaotic and transparent. I love their vibrancy and their fluid nature. I knew that whatever I chose to create, watercolor would always play center stage.
In 2012, I started to travel the comic-con circuit. I was surrounded by so many talented and dedicated artists, that after a while I began to feel that my work wasn't good enough. I became desperate to climb out of the artistic ruts I now found myself in. My work, which had always been a joy to me, was becoming toxic. In 2015, things came to a boiling point. I was so unhappy, I contemplated giving up on this whole "art thing." That was when I took action.
I grabbed a garbage can and threw all of my existing work into it.
All of it.
It was hard. One of the hardest things I've ever done. But I knew I had to do it. Keeping my old art around would be a constant reminder of my own unhappiness, so I gave it the hard goodbye.
Moving forward, I gave myself two simple rules:
1. I would only create things I knew about. Things I was passionate about. Things I could talk endlessly about.
2. I would only create art that I myself would be proud to hang on my own walls.
The results of those rules make up the contents of my first book, ICONIC. It is a collection of my passion for iconography and watercolor painting. I hope you can feel that passion through each of my images.
Risks and challenges
As with any Kickstarter campaign, there is always the risk of it not reaching the goal. Should that happen, no harm, no foul. It only delays my publication date.
Should the campaign be a success, the book will go into immediate publication being that it is ready for print. The risks there are ones like printer delays, shipping delays, customs delays, and inevitably fulfillment delays. Should all go as planned and without a hitch, then all books will be shipped shortly after they are in my hands.
Any rewards featuring sketches, commissions, or other custom work will ship at a later date. How late? that depends upon how many paintings and sketches I have to create. Supporters of those tiers will be notified when their rewards ship out.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
