THE VAJONT CATASTROPHE
On October 9th, 1963 at 10:39pm 260 million cubic meters of rock broke off from the top of Monte Toc. It fell into the reservoir of the Vajont Dam producing an enormous wave of at least 50 million cubic meters of water. The wall of water pushed an air pocket before it. It was more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb. So strong, in fact, that almost all the victims were found naked, their clothes blown off by the blast. The dam, completed in 1959 and the biggest in the world at the time, did not suffer any serious damage. However, the flooding destroyed several villages in the valley and killed almost 2000 people. It was, according to the Unesco, one of the worst man-made environmental catastrophes of all time. The disaster wasn't due to the evil nature of man but more to human negligence.
CALAMITA/À is a tool for investigating the contemporary Vajont and the topic of catastrophes in general.
The project is edited by Gianpaolo Arena (architect, photographer and editor of Landscape Stories magazine) and Marina Caneve (architect, photographer and specialiazing at ECAL/KABK). Camilla Boemio (contemporary art critic and curator), Niccolò Fano (director of Materia and curator Gallery) and Roberta Agnese (PhD candidate and teaching assistant ) are collaborating with us editing exclusive interviews. CALAMITA/À platform is a big team of photographers, artists, urbanists, geologists, musicians and writers.
CALAMITA/À is a no-profit project and, with a lot of efforts, we have been working for more than 2 years. We started this adventure without funds and without supports in 2013 and we are planning to continue to work in the future. CALAMITA/À project is really important for us!
What interested us considerably was how the perception of the tragedy and the mutation of the territory has changed. Now, after two years from the launch of CALAMITA/À, the contents on our online platform are multiple. From the beginning, we have chosen to show on-going Vajont site specific projects on our website, asking the authors to work in relatively long periods of time. The main interest is in fact to build an evolving project and to create a collective and shared vision. For the same reason in 2014 we created the Collateral section and the one dedicated to thematic Interviews strongly declined towards current geopolitics, with some insights on topics such as disasters and calamities, transformations both territorial and urban, dynamic identities, climatic changes, the global market, architecture, the tourism industry, ecologic issues, migration and social marginality and minorities. All these topics are related to Vajont tragedy and for us they are important matherial to share with the authors.
WHAT DO WE WANT TO DO WITH YOUR HELP
GOAL 1 € 10,000 EUR
The CALAMITA/À BOOK.
The main important thing will be a publication that aims to be a point of arrival where we unveil what has been created since 2013 till today.
The authors involved have generously spent a lot of energy creating their projects on the Vajont territory. At the same it will be a new beginning to trigger synergies, collaborations, theories for itineraries.
In our book we will combine site specific projects (link, Jan Stradtmann, Cyrille Weiner & Giaime Meloni, Gabriele Rossi, Marco Lachi, Michela Palermo, Gianpaolo Arena, Marina Caneve, François Deladerriere, Julia Geiser, Latitude Platform, Andrea Alessio, Alfonso Chianese, Sergio Camplone, ecc. ) with an apparatus of critical texts and essays on the subject of catastrophes, as well as an excerpt of the interviews (François Hartog Images and catastrophe, Aglaia Konrad Marble and Sand, William Basinski The Disintegration Loops, Drew Nikonowicz This World and Others Like It, Rob Stephenson Redefining the Borderlands, Simon Norfolk Militant archaeology, Matthieu Gafsou Delicate Balances, Olaf Otto Becker The evanescent landscape, ecc.) developed on the same theme. A sort of interdisciplinary and organic mapping of the territory where photography, still remaining the preferential tool of investigation, overlaps and relates with other disciplines and instruments.
To make this happen I need to raise at least € 10,000 Every euro received, will contribute directly to the production of the book.
** The Book will be both in English and Italian.
GOAL 2 € 15,000 EUR
3 International exhibitions will present the CALAMITA/À project.
1st one will be at Materia Gallery, Rome, October 2016
Moreover with your help we will continue to work on CALAMITA/À website, we will take care of our platform with:
new exclusive interviews
new collateral projects
the creation of a new section dedicated to catastrophe’s books. Presentations, lectures, new projects.
