Welcome to Cakes n Ladders Board Gaming Café Kickstarter page!
We hope you are as excited about the café as we are.
This Kickstarter is for us to get a really really large amount of games into our games library. We are investing a lot of our own money into the cafe and really want it to work.
What is a board game café?
Cakes n Ladders will be an incredible dedicated board game cafe on upper Symonds street, in the heart of Auckland. We will blend the joy of connecting with people over a wide range of exciting board games, with a funky atmosphere and really good food. Board game cafes have become popular around the globe and fulfill an increasing need in growing cities for a unique place to meet and play and laugh together.
Our café will welcome a wide variety of customers from hard-core gamer, to families, couples on a date to groups of friends looking for a space to spend time together. We will also host frequent themed gaming nights for people who want to make new like-minded friends over a game. Cakes n Ladders will feature a growing collection of card and board games, including traditional family games, Euro games, as seen on TableTop and beyond. The concept is modelled after popular overseas board game cafés such as Castle over in Toronto and Draughts in London. Customers who wish to play games will pay a very small hourly fee to access our wonderful library of games for all kinds of gamers in a funky, comfortable café.
Why a board game cafe?
The idea for Cakes n Ladders started in the summer of 2015 after a family trip to America and Canada. We visited Castle Board Game Café and fell in love! Everyone in the café was having a great time. We have loved playing games since we were kids and have amassed quite a library of games in our personal collection. We have also enjoyed meeting new friends through board game nights around Auckland.
Cakes n Ladders will be a place where any age, any skill level, will be able to find a game they love. What's on the menu? Our menu will feature simple, yet well-made options that pair great with games and feature some familiar local favourites. Since our opening hours will be late afternoon to evenings, we plan to serve substantial savouries and plenty of sweets for those wanting to go out for dessert and a game or two.
What about events? We plan to have many one-off special events throughout the year, spooky games on Halloween, romance/dating themed games on Valentine’s day, deception games on April Fools and the like.
We will also be be looking to arrange

Meet the game designer nights
Plus with regular theme nights you’ll be able to come along and meet new people who like playing the same sort of games you do.
Our journey so far.
We have extensively researched and planned this venture, we have found an ideal venue and partnered with a team of professionals to ensure that we’re successful. Now that we have confirmed the venue it is time for us to get the word out and turn Cakes n Ladders into the board gaming hub that Auckland deserves.
Risks and challenges
There will always be challenges trying open a small business. We have researched board game cafés that didn’t work and those that do work and we’ve adapted our business model accordingly. We have met and talked to some amazing people to ensure that we’re doing everything possible to make this project a success.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
