After releasing my last record, I hit the road hard with a revolving roster of musicians, writing songs and sharing stages with some of my heroes. One of them, Jeffrey Foucault, signed on to produce my new album and booked my dream band to play on it. I wrote like wildfire in the months leading up to the session. In late October we walked into Sonelab studio in Easthampton, MA and spent four days playing these songs live, cutting 19 tracks in all. We walked out the door with the core of my new album, RECKLESS SKYLINE.
This is the best music I've ever made - it feels so good. I can't wait to share it with you.
I'm here on Kickstarter because I'm an independent touring musician. This means my fans are essentially my label. Partnering with fans on a successful Kickstarter will help fund the mixing, mastering and printing of the CDs. It means I can play some of the album release shows with a full band and deliver these songs with the gritty electric guitars, searing pedal steel, rock-steady rhythm section, and soulful backup singing that make the album so beautiful. There's nothing like the energy of a great live band, and this one is so damned good it would be a pity to keep all the fun to ourselves behind closed studio doors. Let's hit the road.
[This is an All or Nothing campaign. If we don't reach the goal by the deadline, no credit cards will be charged, no rewards fulfilled.]
I spent four days in the cavernous live room at Sonelab studio in Easthampton, MA with a band of heavy hitters. I’ve listened to the music these men make for years – Jeffrey Foucault’s HORSE LATITUDES is a favorite, along with records by Cold Satellite, Morphine, Ray LaMontagne, Tift Merritt, The Suitcase Junket – and it was a thrill to spend those long days in the studio with this team and hear the fire they brought to my songs. Such generous, soulful players. We worked fast and hard, cutting 19 songs (which means we also have an EP waiting in the wings). We lived together, ate together, and laughed all day. There's nothing like a top-notch band coming together to work and play, having a blast, and searing that energy into a record.

ENOUGH ABOUT HARD TIMES
As a Kickstarter supporter of the new record, you'll be able to hear the album well before its release. You'll receive your selected rewards and get a glimpse into the recording process. And you'll have my deepest gratitude for helping me see this record through and give it a strong sendoff in the world. With your help, this record has a fighting chance. But let's talk about the goodies...
IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS: All physical rewards will be in the mail no later than December 14th.
Scroll through all the rewards on the right for the full palette of options. Here's a little more detail for some of the levels:
$100 LEVEL features a beautiful audio recording from a special unplugged acoustic show at the old Rockingham Meeting House in Vermont. We played many songs from RECKLESS SKYLINE as well as from past records (and one of JF's) as an acoustic duo. This is a high quality recording (WAV download), exclusively for Kickstarters.
$250 LEVEL features a live Concert Window show, customized for you. Pick the time, date, and help me craft the setlist. I'll play from wherever I am right into my computer. You tune in from wherever you are to watch, and we'll invite our friends to do the same. This is an interactive show - you can type comments to me in real time and I can respond. It's really a blast. Learn more at www.concertwindow.com
$1000-$3000 LEVELS feature a House Concert. We bring the live show right to your home, barn, church, porch, backyard... lots of options here. I'll bring at least one sideman, and can haul my PA system if we need to amplify the sound. You can even sell tickets to cover your costs. Our travel costs are not included in the $2K+ packages, but we can plan for a time when tour routing brings us nearby, or you can fly us to your door. Questions? Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
$50+ LEVELS: Tees and CDs come with all levels above $50. If the project is successful, you'll get an email asking which tee design you'd like, what size, your mailing address, etc. You can choose one of the existing designs or the new Kickstarter tee (coming soon). Many levels also include a choice of my old CDs pictured above (GREEN, NEON STREETS, DOWN LIKE SILVER, GOLDEN HOUR). All reward levels above $15 come with the digital download and the physical CD, RECKLESS SKYLINE.
ADD ON and CUSTOMIZE
Have questions? Email me at email@example.com and we can figure it out. If you'd like to add an extra tee to any level, add $20 to the bill. If you'd like to add an extra CD to any level, add $15 to the bill. If you'd like to invent a new reward, just email me.
Kickstarter is an All or Nothing campaign. If we don't reach the goal by October 24th, no credit cards will be charged, no rewards fulfilled. I've chosen $15,000 as the goal - though it sounds like a heap of money to me, this is the bare minimum needed to finish the CD, print it up, and fulfill these rewards.
The costs included in making a record can be daunting - from studio rental, mixing, mastering, printing, to housing, feeding, flying and of course paying the wonderful musicians. I am trying to reach a goal of $15,000 on Kickstarter to help with some remaining costs, but the actual costs of making this record and releasing it in its most humble scenario are closer to $20,000. Sounds huge, I know, but after the hard costs of creating and delivering these rewards, plus the remaining bills to mix/master/print, all of that amount has been put to good use.
The Good: If we hit the $15K mark, I will be able to print up and release RECKLESS SKYLINE in a DIY fashion - book myself the best tour I can, send out the Kickstarter rewards and a few CDs to friendly radio stations, and hope that this music finds its way to more ears and hearts around the world. Reaching this base goal gets RECKLESS SKYLINE out the door, but leaves it to fend for itself.
The Bad: If we don't reach the $15,000 mark by the deadline of October 24, the project won't be funded, your credit card will not be charged, no rewards will be fulfilled. The road to a release date will taper off into the distance, and the record will have a tough time getting heard. I can only holler so loud by myself.
The Beautiful: If by some wild stroke of luck we can hit the goal I was too chicken to post ($20,000), I will be able to take this incredible band out on the road with me (rent a van, fill the tank, house, feed, pay the musicians) and put on the energetic show these songs deserve. We could get some legs under the record with solid radio play and press, plus a little tour publicity. Imagine that!
If you have any questions about the rewards or the making of the album, feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org - I'd be more than happy to talk more about this beautiful project.
I doubt anyone other than my mom has read this far down the page, but if you're still here, Thank You for taking the time to check out my music and this record. It has changed my life already, and I cannot wait to share what we made with you.
PHOTO CREDITS: The band or I took most of these. Thanks to Jay Sansone for the header photos, Zak Trojano, and Domenic Cicala for the Rockingham Meeting House photos.
Risks and challenges
I will do all I can to ensure that RECKLESS SKYLINE will be ready and in your hands by December, and ready for the rest of the world in late January. Several steps remain before its completion and more than a few hurdles are left on this adventure. I am confident that I can meet these deadlines - the majority of the work is done. I'm looking forward to releasing this music and getting your rewards to you as soon as I possibly can. I will do right by you.
