Hi friends! My name is Caili Quan. I'm a dancer with BalletX in Philadelphia, and a recipient of the 2019 Artistic Partnership Initiative Fellowship at The Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU. The Artistic Partnership Initiative is a joint initiative between the Center and professional dance companies to advance the art of choreography. For the next two weeks I get the amazing opportunity of using the resources at The Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU to research movement and create new work.

During these two weeks in New York, I will be creating a new work for Brooklyn-based konverjdans: Tiffany Mangulabnan, Jordan Miller, and Amy Saunder. I'm going to use these precious two weeks to find different ways to generate new movement - with the goal of taking more risk and breaking my typical choreographic habits. I want to see how I can push the physicality of my work and move the dancers more through space. I plan to focus on explorations in the use of the pointe shoe in dance and to see where that takes us.

There is no better place to take more risk and develop new creative ideas than within this Fellowship at The Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU. It's a unique and special honor to be given time to develop new ideas. A huge thank you to The Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU and to Christine Cox, along with BalletX, for the nomination!

Even with this gracious fellowship, I need a little bit more help. Like all New York-based dance freelancers, these three women work other jobs on top of running their own dance company in New York City. I need to raise $3000 in 15 days in order to pay these beautiful dancers.  Please consider donating, and together we can create something amazing.

Risks and challenges

My Artistic Partnership Initiative Fellowship at The Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU has already started. If I do not meet my goal, I will have to pay the dancers out of pocket. In addition, there is no guarantee that the work we create will be performed publicly, although there is an excellent chance that it will be!
