Get ready to Drop the Hammer and Take it to the Limit in Trigger Happy!
This Kickstarter is to publish Trigger Happy. Trigger Happy is the RPG where The Transporter and Die Hard meet the Shield and The Wire. Trigger Happy takes place in a world turned up to 11, where Protagonists live life one trailer-worthy moment to the next. You are a Protagonist; from cop to war vet to neighborhood kid done good enough, you find that the world tries to shove you around and you want to do nothing more than shove it right back.
Trigger Happy is based around a simple d10 die mechanic, adding an attribute to the numbers rolled on the dice to reach a Target Number. This might seem pretty boring, except for two key elements which make Trigger Happy different than your average game: Triggers and Limit.
Triggers are the way you take charge of your character's story. There are two kinds: Ins and Outs. Ins are the trouble that you find or always seems to find you. They're elements of the story that drive your character arc and make you rise to the occasion, giving you bonuses in the appropriate circumstances. Outs let you change fate, giving you a mechanical bonus or allowing you to take narrative control of the scene to your character's advantage.
Meanwhile, Trigger Happy does not use Wounds, Health or Stamina to determine how long a character stays up, but Limit. Limit not only measure how much punishment you can take but how far you can push yourself to succeed. Fail a die roll? Take it to the Limit (by spending Limit) and succeed in what you tried to do. Be careful, as everyone has their Limit and when you hit zero it’s lights out!
You're no hero; you're the Protagonist. You drive the story either by making stuff happen or by reacting to all the trouble that finds you. Against you, you'll find the whole world of people hating you:
Jamokes: these are the mooks, the chumps, the pushovers that get in your way. They are to be mowed down in spectacular fashion.
Mobs: ever wonder why a dozen guys don't attack the Protagonist at once? Well, they are part of a Mob trying to wear you and your friends down. You have them outnumbered 1 to 5 so get to work!
Henchmen: these guys can be tough customers, Taking It To The Limit just like you and really messing up your day.
Bosses: they are just that, Boss. It's like looking in a cracked mirror; they have Limit and Triggers just like you and really want to put you down.
We're going to list some of the stretch goals here; as we get closer, we're going to reveal some more. No Spoilers!
$4500: Red-Band Trailers! (UNLOCKED!)
You’ll get a set of scenarios full of action and bad behavior guest written by RPG rock stars Ross Isaacs (Legend of the Five Rings, Star Trek RPG) and Shoshana Kessock (Tor.com, The Lost Anthology)! This will be in PDF format to all backers.
$5000: "The Trouble With The Irish" (UNLOCKED!)
Matt Forbeck (Ghosts of Ascalon, Brave New World) will write a heartwarming Trigger Happy tale of carnage and mayhem involving two of our signature characters, Tommy Gunns and KatyDoll, as seen on the cover image above. As well, we will throw in game mechanics for the characters in the story. This will be in PDF format.
$6000: Bangers, a setting supplement for Trigger Happy (UNLOCKED!)
Superpowers are an inner city problem, where teen Bangers (so called for the first superpowered teen’s ability to explode objects) stake out turf and demand respect. This supplement for Trigger Happy adds superpowers to the action, crime and grime, powered by Limit and available in PDF format to all backers at the $10 or higher level.
$7000: Killer Soundtrack (UNLOCKED!)
We’re going to get Cameron Hays, producer of work through Evergroove Studio (evergroove.com) to give us a soundtrack in the key of Trigger Happy. You'll recognize his work from the Trigger Happy Promo Video and he has a lot more incredible music to share. Perfect to play in the background for your Trigger Happy games! This is available to all backers at the $10 or higher level.
$8000: Enter the Protagonist (UNLOCKED!)
In the vein of classic martial arts cinema and modern Eastern action comes a supplement with high-flying stunts, chi (and Limit)-powered thuggery and more than enough doves flying in the background as you get ready for the final showdown! This will be available in PDF format to all backers at the $10 or higher level.
$9000: Cameron Johnson reads "The Trouble With The Irish" (Locked)
Decided to squeeze one more stretch goal in, with the lovely narrator of our trailer (this time using his naturally mellifluous voice instead of his Movie Guy voice) reading the upcoming Matt Forbeck story "The Trouble With The Irish". This will be in MP3 format and available to all backers at the $10 or higher level.
$10,000: Make Your Own Games Trigger Happy! (Locked)
Love the idea of Trigger Happy but have your own favorite setting and system you've been playing forever? We’ll include a bunch of math and mechanics in an easy-to-use format to let you add Triggers and Limit to your own favorite systems. We’re going to file the serial numbers off like some mockbuster film but you’ll get what you need to be Trigger Happy in pretty much any game system!
It's not just about the money, but the number of people pledging that matters as well! No good to get all the money if no one is actually getting the game!
(REACHED!) We get 50 backers at $10 or more and we will release a form-fillable PDF of the Trigger Happy character sheet. Just type away instead of trying to read your own terrible handwriting!
(REACHED!) With 75 backers at $10 or more, we'll include Trigger Happy Showrunner Notes, a handy PDF of condensed rules to save you just a bit of time looking stuff up.
(REACHED!) We get 100 backers at $10 or more and we will open up a set of custom Trigger Happy dice you can add on to any pledge.
At 200 backers at $10 or more (REACHED!) and you will get a Deck Full of Trouble, a PDF set of Jamokes and Mobs designed in card format suitable for printing. We are also offering a premium printed deck option for $12 dollars each! While shipping will be free for US backers at the $30+ levels (I mean, a deck weighs 4 ounces), we need to add $5 shipping for US pledges at the $10 level and $10 shipping for shipping outside the US regardless of pledge level.
(REACHED!) We get 50 backers at the $30 level or higher and we will create special foreign language Trigger Happy posters in German and Chinese! Everyone will get a desktop image of both posters and they will be able to add the 18x24" poster or posters of their choice to their pledge
English Poster: $25
German Poster: $30
Chinese Poster: $30
All Three Posters: $75
For Jamoke-level backers ($10) or lower, shipping will be $10 in the US or international. For all The Mob backer levels pledges ($30) or higher, we are including shipping in the US and it will be $10 international shipping.
(REACHED!) We get 75 backers at the $30 level or higher and we will unlock “Syrian Thrift Shop”, an international tale of people diving into Middle Eastern conflict for Spring Break fun and a big payday. As well, we will throw in game mechanics for the characters in the story. This will be in PDF format.
We get 100 backers at the $30 level or higher (REACHED!) and we will make aluminyzed metal prints of all the chapter header art and other selected pieces available for sale (as well as the far less sturdy but still nice paper prints)! Metal and Art Prints will be available at the $30 pledge level and above.
Risks and challenges
Some of the major risks for a project such as this are actually getting it completed. Between writing, editing and layout, production can certainly drag along.
Fortunately, much of Trigger Happy is already written and in layout (for certain projects I tend to write into layout). The chapter header art is 66% complete and in place. Once we receive funding, we will already have a set of artists (as well as backups) who will get to work on the 10-18 additional pieces of art we are putting into Trigger Happy. Art can be a bottleneck but this is why we have backup artists and are spreading our art among different artists; we also have several pieces already finished. We have done extensive playtesting, with one last round scheduled from among backers of certain pledge levels to work out final kinks and issues; the layout is flexible so even an major change in mechanics can be accommodated without a problem.
Shipping: Stuff gets lost. Ninjas may kidnap your package. Your mail truck may not be able to slow down because it will explode if it goes less than 55 miles an hour. Backers get their stuff before it goes on general sale. Shipping may cost more in certain circumstances so we will absorb that cost.
Printing: I've previously worked in print production so I know about the hiccups that can occur on the print side of things. We are currently sourcing printers so that we have backups available in case of problems.
Financial: Since I double as both layout and writing guy that avoids some of the cost issues that would delay a project. As well, my current field is private equity; I'm fairly agile when it comes to raising money.
Although this may be a 'first' print product for TaleSpinner Holdings in the RPG area, we have experience in dealing with vendors, sourcing print on a B2B basis and wrangling artists and other contributors to complete projects successfully. As well, I have written or contributed to over a dozen RPG products for such companies as Super Genius Games, Pyramid Magazine, Abstract Nova and Pinnacle and I personally released the game DreamSide at GenCon back in 1999, selling out the short print run in three days.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
