About

Oh hey, we get 100 backers and I add a Lifepath system to make creating a cast of characters, locations and events easier! See Update #3!

We get 170 backers at the Neighbor level or above and you get the My, Ahem, Former Dark Lord Add-On added to all pledge levels! See Update #8

So, I wrote a short storygame about being a retired supervillain for my Patreon. It was a few hundred words but it's concise and funny and playable. I thought I might be able to expand it...

Six days later, I ended up with a 4500 word combination of setting fiction, mechanics, and game advice for Retired: a Storygame About the Ordinary Life of a Former Supervillain. It's a two-player game, where one player is the Retiree and the other is The Narrator of a world dead-set on annoying a former supervillain trying to enjoy a return to regular life.  The game world is built through play, starting off in small sessions set in your home and neighborhood and then growing into the wider world. From nosy neighbors and chores around the house which get out of hand to former rivals and alien invasions, your retirement isn't going to be just puttering around the garden...

Play runs between 15-30 minutes per session, but can run longer. People can trade off playing the same Retiree, or make up their own Retiree to have episodic adventures in the world.

Play is a discussion between the Retiree and The Narrator, informed by the character the Retiree builds based on questions about the world. The Retiree rolls a number of six-sided dice when they and The Narrator can't agree on something or when the outcome is uncertain. Getting a 5 or higher means that the Retiree has more sway in the discussion, the more dice which are 5 or higher, the better. If the Retiree chooses to use a Power to alter the outcome, this adds to all the dice rolled, making it easier for the Retiree but flavoring the scene for The Narrator and setting up future problems. Sure, your Super-Speed is going to help you get all your shopping done, but what condition is the store going to be in with you out of practice and moving at the speed of sound?

If the Retiree stumbles too much in the world, they accumulate points in their Get Off My Lawn! Meter. At the right moment, those points explode into a scene, letting the Retiree rant about just how stupid their whole day is going and letting them use the points to alter their latest roll and finally catch a break.

The game is written: it needs an editing review and some light playtesting to shake it out a bit, and I may expand it with more play advice and a full example of play, but I could probably drop it into InDesign right now and get it out the door. We're not loading it up with art, but we'll have graphic design elements and a small form factor making it easy to use in play.

When the book is completed you will get a PDF of Retired  as well as a code for a Print On Demand copy of Retired from DriveThruRPG (costing about $2 + shipping). They will print and ship to you once you order. This has several benefits, including improved turnaround times once the book is approved for printing and helping to insulate both of us from shipping increases since we’ll never have as good an arrangement as DTRPG. This especially holds true for international shipping as people will be able to take advantage of DTRPG's multiple printing locations, as well as consolidating their shipping of Retired with other books.

I'm putting Retired on Kickstarter to make sure it gets the eyes on it I feel it should have; it's a sharp idea I don't want to get lost in the shuffle.

I'm Caias Ward. I've run three successful Kickstarters and have contributed to others. I have a background in graphic design as well as writing and developing products for print. Feel free to take a look at my other Kickstarters to see how they went and what I managed to do.

Risks and challenges

There are always risks for Kickstarters, and this one is no exception. While the game is written, a delay by my editor would result in a commensurate delay in delivery. I have planned in a cushion to allow for delays. Backers of one of the levels, should they delay their involvement, would represent a delay, but I am good at wrangling people. Approval of the print version of Retired may take time depending on issues with DriveThruRPG, but again, I have planned in a cushion to allow for delays.

This would be my fourth Kickstarter; I have delivered all of my other projects early or on time. The streamlined nature of this project avoids many of the problems of 'moving parts' which come up with other projects. Effectively, there is one pledge level, the game in PDF and Print, as a major component and as stated above the game is written.

I have backup computers with the graphic design software needed to fulfill the project.

My personal background is as a stationary engineer in a data center. Both have given me the resources to put out fires (in some cases, literal fires) which come up in a project. I am confident with our forward-looking statements in this respect even as we mitigate risk.
