The New England Hiking Map (Canceled)
A 30x40 inch poster of New England showing all the public hiking trails! Pin the hikes you've done or find new adventures.
One Poster - All The Trails in New England!
The New England Hiking Map will be a 30x40 inch poster showing New England's amazing hiking and bike trail network. No roads on this map - just trails, parks, public lands, and a smattering of helpful topographic information. This map will also highlight long distance trails and historical trails in addition to zoomed-in insets for trail-heavy urban areas. The map will be intricately labeled by hand to ensure usefulness and a clean presentation. I am meticulously combing through each and every county in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts to make sure this map is as complete as possible.
Here's the basic idea (more elements to be added soon!):
I'll tell you more about that project in just a moment, but first I need to establish some New England credibility.
My love of hiking and the outdoors started in the White Mountains of New Hampshire while my parents led me to places like Mount Lafayette and Franconia Falls. I also enjoyed exploring (and sometimes getting lost in) the woods of Marion, Massachusetts where I lived for over 5 years. My last gig in New England was working (playing) as a camp counselor at Camp Walt Whitman in Piermont, New Hampshire. I still have lots of family and friends out there (hi Dad!).
I will share drafts of the New England Hiking Map with all backers several times before fulfillment to receive feedback on style, accuracy, and content. I am aiming for fulfillment in January 2018. For backers that are looking for Christmas gifts, I will send a postcard to the address of your choice in mid-December letting them know what is on their way in January! The project location is listed as Boston, MA as the maps will likely be printed there.
Please note that this map is designed at a small scale (zoomed out) to show all of New England. This map would not be appropriate to use for navigational purposes. Please consult your favorite trail guides / topo maps / online resources for important trail information. With this map on your wall, hopefully you'll find an opportunity to mark the hikes that you have visited and look for new trails to explore.
Here's some more information about The California Hiking Map (somewhat relevant, since I'm modeling The New England Hiking Map after it, with some improvements).
Interviews with Inside Hook, Backpackers.com, North State Public Radio, KRCR News Channel 7, and the Chico News and Review share information about the map. The California Hiking Map was also featured on Backpacker Magazine’s Play List for May 2016 and Gear Junkie’s Emerging Gear List for July 2016. Additional coverage from Yubanet, LAist, Curbed LA, Curbed SF, the Matador Network, Men’s Journal, SF Gate, and Lonely Planet.
Thanks so much for your help and support!!
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk with this project is a delay in production. Fortunately, this is my second project of this nature so I know what work needs to go into finishing the map, preparing it for printing, working with printers, shipping, and customer service. I will communicate my progress regularly and let folks know if anything is delaying the project.
In the off-chance that prints are damaged in the mail, I'll be able to resend another print at no cost to the recipient.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
