So this Kickstarter Campaign is a wrap! Thank you SO much to all those that support this project. I'll be hard at work making it happen. I believe there will be a Post-Campaign Kickstarter site (called Spotlight) reachable from this page. I can also be reached at https://www.facebook.com/cahikingmap/. The project as a whole will eventually migrate to www.californiahikingmap.com (under construction).
I'm making a wall map of California featuring all the hiking trails in the entire state! Would you like one on YOUR wall?
One of my favorite things about hiking is the trip planning. I love pouring over published maps, topo quads, and trip reports looking for the next amazing adventure. Sometimes I get in trouble for dreaming about future trips while I'm in the middle of a hike.
I also enjoy keeping track of where I've been. My wife and I have done this by scribbling puffy paint on national forest wall maps to fill in the trails that we have been on. I didn't have enough room on my walls to fit the printed map of every national forest, national park, state park, county park, city park, etc. so I decided to look for a map of the entire State of California that had all the hiking trails mapped and labeled.
There wasn't one.
So I decided to make one!
Fast forward a year and a half and it's almost finished! It took hundreds of hours worth of GIS development, digitizing, research, cartography, reinventing the wheel, and editing. The final product is shaping up to be a 40in wide x 60in tall comprehensive wall map of California that shows and labels as many hiking trails as possible.
With any sort of printing, volume helps push down the cost of the final product and makes it accessible to more people. Funds collected will help finance the offset printing of this map. I certainly want this map to be reasonably priced for anyone who wants to obtain one. I also want to ship the maps rolled up as opposed to folded because I want them to look great on your wall.
I hope that you will have the chance to stare at this wall map and feel inspired to hit the trail. Maybe it will help you find a new trail that you didn't know existed in your own back yard? I know you'll want to keep it in good condition but I hope it ends up getting marked up with puffy paint and push pins like mine will be.
Risks and challenges
This project is all about printing a beautiful and inspiring map. I have performed preliminary work on acquiring printing, shipping, and packaging quotes. I have been working with a local printing service to print and re-print drafts so that I can review them and assure that the map will truly look great on you wall.
The two major milestones that we are contending with are:
1. Finishing the map. I have been working on the building blocks of this map for over a year and a half now. I'm comfortable with where I'm at now and I have a good idea what it will take to finish it.
2. Printing the maps. As I previously stated, I've been working on obtaining quotes and have even printed some mock drafts. I am comfortable with this process once the map is finished.
If there are any unexpected delays in the project, I will communicate clearly and honestly with my backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
