About

Born and raised in San Francisco's Bayview District, April Spears and Meaghan Mitchell are two community-oriented African-American women who thrive due to their ambition.

April who also owns Auntie April's Chicken, Waffles and Soulfood has been a restauranteur for ten years in San Francisco's Bayview District and has been recognized nationally for her culinary talent. Meaghan has over ten years of experience in restaurant management and entertainment curation in San Francisco. So naturally, the duo Cafe Envy would not only be a great partnership but an excellent addition to their community.

The concept of Cafe Envy stems from their shared passion of wanting to create a fun work/play space which offers fresh healthy organic menu items all day paired with local wine, beer, and spirits. In the evening the plan is to liven up the neighborhood by hosting events such as art shows and music performances.

We will feature cafe-style tables, full bar seating, and areas for customers to plug in and use their laptops. To create more of a cozy “living room style” atmosphere, couches along with a coffee table topped with magazines, board games and books will also be available. We are also looking at the possibility of having outside seating.

One of the most exciting things about Cafe Envy is its location. The space located at 1705 Yosemite Ave in the Bayview District was formerly the popular Monte Carlo Nightclub (owned by an African American couple) and operated for over 20 years. With its rich historical impact in mind, April and Meaghan are aiming to create a similar entertaining atmosphere to draw patrons citywide to Cafe Envy.

Securing more minority-owned businesses is important to April and Meaghan, specifically in their community which is dealing with the outmigration of African Americans due to gentrification. While they both learned to embrace the changes of their neighborhood and appreciate its cultural diversity, they want to continue to be part of the change by developing the concept of Cafe Envy and opening their doors to the community.

Your support will make this project that they have been "dreaming up" a reality.

Risks and challenges

We are well equipped to deal with the challenges that come with running a business and keeping it active as we have already proven ourselves successful in running a business for ten years on the corridor. Our main concern with this specific location is the building's condition. Several internal repairs need to be made in order to open the space and we are working closely with our landlord to make sure everything is intact. The only delay we anticipate is the permitting process, but we expect to be open next Spring.
