The very first MYBRIGHTON & HOVE 2019 calendar is a social enterprise initiative for individuals who have been affected by homelessness. The project is run completely by volunteers, in partnership with Community Interest Company Café Art

In June this year, at One Church in Brighton, 100 Fujifilm single-use cameras were handed out to people affected by homelessness. They were given the brief to take photographs on the theme "My Brighton and Hove". Training on how to use the cameras was given by volunteer photographers at workshops in May and June, and again on the day of the handout.

It’s the first year of the project and so far feedback from photographers who took part, and organisations supporting them has been overwhelmingly positive.

“MYBRIGHTON & HOVE Photo Project has recognised the amazing talents of a group of people don't always get the recognition they deserve. People who were given cameras were also given a platform to have a voice and show their perspectives of the world, which means those who took part have felt empowered and acknowledged in a way that is unfortunately rare.  This project has enabled residents to find a passion and purpose, some going on to photography courses, others having their work in a gallery to show their children, some will be able to earn money through their photos. We at Brighton YMCA are so proud of everyone who took part, thank you for organising such a wonderful initiative.” - Briony Banks, Brighton YMCA

Our aim with our very first Kickstarter is to:

  • Raise funds to print the calendar.
  • Fund the exhibition and frame the photographs in the exhibition in October.
  • Reimburse the photographers.
  • Set up an art and photography mentoring scheme in Brighton and Hove.

To do that we need your support!

Non-calendar exhibition photos

The following 7 photos were chosen for the exhibition, but are not in the calendar. You can still order them as rewards. Like the other photos, 50% of the profit will go to the photographers (£8.50 per photo) with the rest going back to cover project costs.

The Calendar

MYBRIGHTON & HOVE calendar 2019 is a quality product - a real art calendar, with FSC certified paper and designed for free by top London graphic firm, Carter Wong Design.

The contributors to the calendar - the winning photographers - all wrote or edited their own stories.

A panel of judges looked through over 3000 images in July to choose their top 20 photographs. The selection panel included representatives from Amateur Photographer magazine, FujiFilm, Photoworks, Justlife Art studios, Passage, The Royal Photographic Society and individuals with experience of homelessness. The photos were then on display at ONCA Gallery in the last week in July 2018, with the public being asked to choose their favourite for the 2019 MYBRIGHTON & HOVE calendar.

When the calendar is printed, we are aiming sell it for £9.99 in local markets in Brighton and Hove with the photographers and other people affected by homelessness who would like to gain work experience. Vendors who complete some basic sales training are given their first calendar and when they have sold it for £9.99 they can buy more for £5. This way they manage their own micro-business. They can sell calendars on their own, or join the supported environment in the market from October to December. The £5 received by MYBRIGHTON & HOVE Photo Project goes directly to paying our remaining printing costs.

Where does the money go?

It will cost us £3500 to print 1,000 calendars. This is due in three instalments in October, November and December. We want to put the money raised on Kickstarter towards the first payment to the printer in October, as well as covering other launch costs (paying the photographers, funding and framing the exhibition in October and mailing the Kickstarter rewards). The calendar will be produced by PrintHouse Corporation, a London firm. This will support the local economy and will also reduce the environmental impact caused by shipping product from an overseas printer.

The project is self-funding from calendar sales only, and receives no government money. We are supported in kind by The RPS and FujiFilm and endorsed by Homeless Link, the umbrella organisation for homelessness charities and organisations. We have also been fortunate to have the support of local Brighton and Hove comapnies including One Church Brighton and Brighton YHA who have donated room hire to enable to project to take place.

All the money raised will go back into the project, either to pay for the printing of the photographs and calendar, rewarding the winning photographers, providing art materials for art groups affected by homelessness or helping individuals attend art courses.

Photography mentoring for the photographers

“It’s given me so much confidence. I would never have been brave enough to ask people to take their photo before, but doing this project has shown me I can do it. I really want to do more photography now and have lots of ideas forming.” - MYBRIGHTON & HOVE Photo Project participant

Our hopes for the future after this project are that we can mirror the success of MyLondon and launch a photography mentoring program for Brighton and Hove based photographers with experience of homelessness.

To do this we need your help to support our kickstarter!

“Taking part in the MYBRIGHTON & HOVE photo project has helped me to get out of a depression so it’s been quite therapeutic.” -  MYBRIGHTON & HOVE Photo Project participant

Art is a major way for people to recover from the trauma of being homeless. We need to reach our Kickstarter target to confirm the final amount printed.

Please support our very first MYBRIGHTON & HOVE photo project and enable these amazing and talented photographers to share their narrative with the world!

Risks and challenges

This is the first year of the project, and the first time we have produced a MYBRIGHTON & HOVE calendar. We are very fortunate to be partnered with, and mentored by Cafe Art, who have sucessfully produced a MYLONDON calendar for the last 7 years and fundraised for this via Kickstarter.

We are in the process of writing and editing the calendar which will be sent to the designer ready for our print deadline. We have a fixed deadline for the launch - October 2018 where we plan to sell the calendar alongside the exhibition, which will be part of the Brighton PhotoFringe. However we need to reach our Kickstarter target to confirm the final amount printed.

A challenge we have after we print the calendar is selling the remaining calendars in local markets while providing work experience to people who have been and are homeless.

The challenge will be to ensure all calendars are sold, so we can raise funds to print the calendar. We also need to fund the exhibition including framing in October, reimburse the photographers and set up an art and photography mentoring scheme in Brighton and Hove.

Vendors affected by homelessness who want to sell the calendar for themselves will still be able to do so through the vendors programme: buying the calendar for £5 and selling it for £9.99.
