About this project
The film is about a recent college graduate, Ricardo, who was brought to the United States as an infant. He finishes college, Summa Cum Laude, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Ricardo wants nothing more than to put to use all that he learned in college. He does not know where to begin because of his legal status. Ricardo moves in with his long time girlfriend, and soon to be wife, Michelle. Just when the two of them are starting to plan out their future, the unfortunate happens. Ricardo is pulled over and immediately taken into custody, where he is soon ordered to be deported. The film flashes back, showing the hardships that Ricardo faces throughout his entire life as an undocumented immigrant; leading up to the brutality he is exposed to in the immigration detention center. Separated from her fiancé, Michelle will stop at nothing to save the love of her life from being deported. Michelle teams up with Richard, an immigration attorney who feels sympathetic towards the couple. Richard's involvement transforms into a battle against this unfair reality. Michelle learns that the only hope for Ricardo is if a bill called The Dream Act is passed. This bill applies to all immigrants who were brought to the United States at a young age.
Funds & Budget
Below you will find our drafted budget sheet which does not include taxes. The sheet includes the salary of the three primary characters (Ricardo, Michelle, Richard). This film will be created without the extravagant resources that are available at a major studio. We have the most important resources; passion, creativity, and determination. With these resources, and your help we will create an unforgettable film.
What will happen after the film is complete?
When we complete the film we will screen it in theaters all across the country. We conducted a list of states where immigration laws are severe and/or contain a high immigrant population. In order to reach as many people as we can, we selected highly populated cities located in those chosen states. You may find a draft of our screening locations below. Although we would love to screen "The DREAM Act" everywhere, our finances may not allow for it. Depending on our budget, we are hoping to increase the number screening locations. The film will most likely premiere in Newark, NJ where the film is set to be filmed.
Fabio Caetano has worked as an actor in several films. In the fall of 2011 Fabio directed his first feature "Park County Massacre" which premiered to an audience of over 150 people. Fabio launched a production company which has received hundreds of emails from screen writers, actors, crew and journalists, who are interested in putting together "The DREAM Act" movie.
Why do we ask for $7,500 and not $43,808?
We ask for $7,500 because we are still able to create this film using an old Canon Vixia HG21, a few friends, and a garage as a studio. But that isn't what this project deserves. It would not be fair to ask for our entire budget, $43,808, because that amount includes post production funding (as you can see from the above budget list). We will take on the responsibility of raising post productions funds, once we have completed the film. We thought about asking for the total cost of production, $31,308, because that is how much we truly are hoping for. However, we decided to lower our kickstarter goal to $7,500. We chose this because the budget for Fabio Caetano's previous film, "Park County Massacre," was $1,000. This small budget meant that many scenes/props/equipment needed to be compromised. Based on that knowledge, we predict that if we can earn as little as $7,500, we will have a decent start to set The DREAM Act in motion. If you can not contribute, we hope that you will encourage someone else to. We all put so much time into this project, and for all of the dreamers out there, we do not want to see it fail. There are thousands of wonderful projects on kickstarter, and we hope you consider ours as one of them.
How did we determine the estimated arrival dates for the rewards?
Most of the reward levels have items that will be sent way before the date that is shown. However, we decided to make the date an estimate of when you will receive all of the items listed at that level. For example, if a thank you letter and a copy of the DVD are both included, the thank you letter will arrive shortly after we are funded, and the DVD will arrive around September 2014. The film will be completed before then, but we can not send out DVDs until we know how the film will be represented and distributed. We predict that all of this will be decided by September 2014.

Risks and challenges
To be very honest there are a few risks and challenges our project faces, just like any other project. I will list a two off the top of my head.
1. Something that is challenging is making this film on a low budget. Hollywood would probably use $50 million to make this film, and we are hoping to do it under $100,000. Currently our kickstarter goal of $7,500 will get us the bare minimum to make the film a possibility. If we can exceed $100K there are many more opportunities and resources that will be available to us.
-What makes us qualified on this part is all the resources we have from so many different connections. For example: Fabio's previous film Park County Massacre was done with a budget of around $1,000, but if you watch the film you would think we spent at least $20 thousand because of all the props, and locations used. We filmed in a million dollar home, used several emergency vehicles, had a large amount of people involved, and even used the streets of Elizabeth NJ as a studio thanks to Mayor Chris Bollwage; so something I definitely learned from this project is it sure helps to know people.
2. Distribution: it's extremely difficult to get distribution for an independent film, and any independent filmmaker will tell you that.
-What makes us qualified for this difficult part of film is that we all keep ourselves educated with regards to how distribution works. For example, talking a top film course: Movies 101 @ NYU with Professor Richard Brown, gaining insight from many filmmakers including Scott Hicks, and Nicholas Stroller. The most important thing is that we have a plan and we are going to put all we have into it. Right from the beginning we are sharing with you a
list of locations across the U.S that we will be exhibiting the film in select theaters.
From director Fabio Caetano:
One might ask; "How will you put your film in theaters?"
Answer: That is one of the secrets to distribution, and if I give you that it will no longer be a secret silly.
Then you might say: "Prove it!"
Answer: Donate, and we will prove it.
Then you might get frustrated and say:
"I'm not donating until I see a success from previous work!"
Answer: Okay, maybe this will make you a dreamer. A few months ago I wrote, and directed the film "Park County Massacre" which was supposed to be a short experimental/horror spook for halloween to share with family and friends. The film had so much momentum that it ended up getting bigger than I had ever expected. When the film was complete we worked with a theater who couldn't wait to screen our film. We had a completely packed theater the night of the premiere. We were also lucky enough to have press join us that evening. Who ever thought that a film with only a thousand dollars would be this successful? To see one of the press interviews conducted that night please visit:
We hope the above information is enough to give you faith in our qualifications to putting this film together. We have so many people who are eager to be a part of this film. Our biggest difficulty is coming up with the funding to produce this film, which is why we are putting our faith in the many kickstarter supporters. With the help of you, our fans, friends, and family we are going to make an amazing film. We are very thankful to everyone who donates, and/or gets someone else to donate.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
