Hello friends, family, fans and fans-to-be! Can you believe that seven years have passed since our last album? That's too long, isn't it? Well, we've decided to do something about it and boy are we excited!
What is it?
This will be our fifth studio album, coming out this year, Cadence's twentieth anniversary! We spent months tossing around ideas about what this album should be. What sort of stuff do we want to include? What do our fans want to hear? What excites us? After much deliberation, we have decided to create an album of all Canadian content! We have selected a few of our favourite songs by Canadian artists that even non-Canadians will recognize and enjoy, such as Gordon Lightfoot, Feist, Michael Buble and The Tragically Hip, to name a few. There will also be several original songs on the album (we're Canadian too, after all!), one of which is the title track - Home.
It's been seven years! We are all so very eager to be putting out some new music for everyone to enjoy. We have lots of passion and ideas brewing over here and we need somewhere to put them! We chose the theme for the album because, as four proud Canadians, we wanted to pay tribute to some of the amazing musicians our country has produced by putting a Cadence spin on some of our personal favourite Canadian songs.
Where does the money go?
A project like this is largely a labour of love. The four of us will have logged countless unpaid hours in the creation of the album, but that's because we love the music, we want to make something that we and our mothers (Hi mom!) can be proud of, and we want to make something our fans can enjoy. Despite our volunteered hours, there are many other costs associated with making an album. We need to pay for studio time, album design, editing, engineering, production, mastering, printing, publicity, royalties, photography etc.
The album will come out June 22nd (keep an eye out for details on the album release party)! We started recording in May of 2017 and are already done several tracks. We have been very busy with our continued touring and performing, but we are arranging, composing, recording and editing with every spare moment. We are thrilled with how things are coming together, and we hope you will be too.
As you may already know, our foursome is made up of Ross Lynde (Tenor), Lucas Marchand (Tenor), David Lane (Baritone/Vocal Percussion) and Kurt Sampson (Bass/Vocal Percussion). In order to ensure the best possible product, we have also assembled a team of skilled individuals to aid us. Producing the album is longtime friend, amazing musician and ex-Cadence member Dylan Bell. We wanted an outside ear to give us opinions, suggestions and some different musical ideas to take things to the next level and Dylan seemed like a natural choice. To mix the album, we have enlisted Kai Koschmider. Kai is a studio engineer with a lot of experience in the a cappella world. He has worked with us on several projects in the past and we are excited to have him on the team! We have also hired the amazingly talented Kate Hall to put together the album artwork.
Risks and challenges
Making an album is a huge undertaking with many moving parts. One song may be at the mixing stage, while another is being arranged, while another is being recorded. Meanwhile, we need to make sure our graphic designer Kate has all the info she needs so we can get new graphics to our publicist to help promote the album release, tickets for which are one of the rewards for this very kickstarter campaign, which also requires graphics from Kate and so on and so on. We think you get the point. Scheduling and planning a project of this magnitude is a big challenge, but we have learned a lot from our experiences recording our four previous albums and we are confident that we will make it through relatively unscathed! There is also a financial risk involved, which is why we have been applying for grants and why we have started this crowdfunding campaign. With your help and support, we will be able to make this album the way we envision it!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
