*** Everything below this line is optional detail! ***
Who are we? We're High Technology Publishing Ltd.
We were established in 1996 by Chris Abbott and have been Rob's publishers since 1997, helping him out with all sorts of musical, practical and legal stuff, and making C64 miracles possible.
Rob has creative control/veto over what's in this Kickstarter, and is a full stakeholder in its success, but legal responsibility for licencing, fulfilment and logistics lies solely with us.
Pledge to this official Kickstarter, support Rob and help us get the London Symphony Orchestra ("Star Wars", "Harry Potter") to play powerfully arranged C64 music for the ultimate emotional journey you thought you'd never have.
To celebrate this Kickstarter, One Bit Robot created a free game for you (PC/MAC).
More details, and new Rob Hubbard tunes!
(~300 pages, Hardback, Full Colour)
Rob is serious about music. He treated video game music seriously too: one of the first musicians to do so. This is part of the reason why fans worldwide responded to his tunes so powerfully.
Because Rob put so much into his music, it's only fair that we examine Rob's career and output with the same depth.
Our expert in this field is Dr. Kenny McAlpine who is one of the foremost writers in musical analysis of video game music, and an expert in chiptunes. He has also authored a book which interviews video game musicians including Rob, shortly to be published by New York: Oxford University Press called "Bits and Pieces: A History of Chiptunes".
Here is a TED talk from him on chipmusic.
Kenny is a big fan of the genre, having spent his formative years experiencing raw waveforms.
So, expect to find biography, interviews, in-depth analysis, technical overviews and appendices targeted at all experience levels, lots of new facts and knowledge and plenty of "wow" moments, illustrated with full colour pictures, illustrations and photos.
There will also be an e-reader friendly version too which reformats the book for smaller e-Reader screens.
The book will be written by Dr. Kenny McAlpine, Dr. Rob Hubbard and Paul E. Morrison, with Jason Page, Anna Black, Andrew Fisher and Frank Gasking. Design: Definite.design. Consultant Editor: Roger Kean. Supervising Editor: Chris Abbott. A C64Audio.com book.
The book will be 200mm x 265mm, which is roughly the size of Edge Magazine.
We think this book will mark a new era, giving VGM artists and their art the treatment they deserve. It's fitting that Rob, ever the pioneer, should be its first subject!
Now confirmed, the book will also integrate an extra section called "Robb!64", edited by Roger Kean, and featuring the Zzap!64 heads of the legendary Julian Rignall, Gary Penn and Gary Liddon, all ready to opine once again on Dr Rob's most iconic works! (and to be interviewed for the book proper).
This would be a more light-hearted and humorous tribute modelled after "Zzap!64", and would review Rob's music the way they did the games.
It will also have irreverent quotes, facts, tables and charts about Rob created in classic Zzap!64 style.
"Hubbard '80" - 15 track "Premix" Album
What if in 1979 Rob was a successful electronic recording artist, and the later SIDs were actually covers of tracks from Rob's forthcoming much-anticipated album "Hubbard '80" (released: January 3rd, 1980)?
Rob himself and Marcel Donné are teaming up to create this missing album. It will use classic modular synths, occasional live players such as studio strings and horns, and will use only sounds that could have been created with technology available in 1979 (for a 1980 release).
In these tracks, you will be able to hear the 1979 version of the sound design that later would push the SID to its limits.
Rob's 1979 studio for this album would have looked a bit like this:
- big Moog 55
- Solina String Ensemble
- prophet 5
... plus occasional borrowed synths and live players, largely sequenced on the Roland MC8. Expect the vinyl to contain a lot of synth beauty shots!
Here's a sample of what that setup sounds like, with Lightforce (WIP, incomplete).
In this project, we imagine that track came first in 1980, and was converted to the SID later, with great results!
Available on CD and digital (MP3/FLAC).
Hubbard '80 is also available on double vinyl and cassette. For the vinyl add-on add £50 for each copy required.
For cassette tape add-on add £12 for each copy required.
The Rob Hubbard Archive
A double audio album of a wide range of archive material, including lost tracks, soundtracks and rarities. Guaranteed that you haven't heard most of these Rob Hubbard tracks!
- Studio tracks from pre-SID in their original form, including "Work Opera", the soundtrack for a TV programme for Tyne Tees with Steve Daggett.
- Lost PC and Sega Genesis soundtracks, some previously unreleased.
- Other tracks from Rob's personal history re-orchestrated by Rob himself.
Here's an example from Rob's archive: it's called "Mr Meaner".
An album of up to 15 new Rob Hubbard SIDs.
Some of Rob's SIDs were based on previous synth tunes he wrote (for instance, WAR and Chimera).
In another Universe he might have chosen differently. Here, retro legend Jason Page (Graftgold, Sensible, Sony) and Rob himself raid Rob's back catalogue for SIDs that never were, and create the ultimate authentic sounding never-SIDs in a modified version of Rob's original driver.
Here's a medley of three of the new SIDs: "Don't Step on My Wire", from the extended Kickstarter video, "Casio" and "Task Force". Classic Rob sound, classic Rob music.
The upper VIP levels also include a signed bootleg 5.25" disk of that. It's like Rob sent you a preview himself back in the old days!
A downloadable Alt-SIDs demo disk image (D64, transferrable to a real C64 or an emulator) is included in Project Hubbard Deluxe.
Apart from that, and granting 24/96 HQ Audio and video from the project where available, we have commissioned some great albums to celebrate Rob's life!

Not played "Roborob" yet? Here's what you're missing out on:
How does Rob benefit from this? Rob is an equal stakeholder in this Kickstarter, and will also be additionally recompensed for any time spent on it. While Rob has creative control over all parts of this Kickstarter, the Kickstarter itself is being run by C64Audio.com/High Technology Publishing Ltd., who are responsible for the logistics, licencing and finances.
Copyright Permissions and Trademarks The images and music in the project will be appropriately licensed. All product names, logos, and brands are property of their respective owners.
Postage We calculate that the book will be 1.1kg, Project Hubbard Deluxe Box-Set 0.8kg, and Project Hubbard Standard Digipack 0.250g. postage has gone up hugely over the last couple of years and we've tried to absorb some of these increases so as not to put off backers with realistic, but high, postage sticker prices. There's no getting round it though: unless you're prepared to lose money like Amazon, sending books around the world is not a cheap business.
Risks and challenges
Timescales are always approximate, but our experience on other Kickstarters has given us valuable insight into how things can get delayed, and what the effects are if timescales overrun: more likelihood of a personal crisis somewhere in the dependency chain, and increased costs due to political and economic changes.
How will this Kickstarter affect Project Sidologie or Symphony 64? Project Sidologie is due for fulfilment before the end of the year, freeing up Marcel for Hubbard '80. In terms of Symphony 64, Chris Abbott's main task will still be orchestrating and setting up the associated concerts. Chris' role in Project Hubbard is primarily an executive and administrative one.
All of our Kickstarters are noted for their ambition, value, and quality of the end-product. We have the best people working at the top of their game doing things they love which would otherwise not have happened. That's how Kickstarter should work.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
