Weekly Update #4 - Saturday, December 13th
1) Headsketches: Dave is about 40% of the way through the 42 (about a dozen more than for CANO) as of his report yesterday at A Moment of Cerebus. He's estimating he can do about 4 per day not including Friday's when he posts his update.
2) Proofs of Main & Bonus Prints: I had two rounds of print approvals this week (Tuesday and yesterday). Dave's assessment of the print quality is "Looks Great" and "Better than CANO". I think the blacks have a very 'rich' black tone to them. I'm going to be sending them to Sean in San Diego for final approval early next week and then we will go to production. There 6 pages (double sided) of Notes this time (triple that of CANO), with much more content and some pictures. We are printing those on the same cardstock as the main and bonus prints so that they stand up better and insert better into the stay-flats. So.... 3 sheets of notes, 10 sheets of main prints, plus up to 10 sheets of Bonus Prints. I'll likely pack the half-sized Bonus Prints in a separate envelope and then tape that down to the inside of the cardboard packaging to keep it from 'sloshing around' during transport. We had some damage reports resulting from loose items, particularly the HS 16 page signatures last time, so we'll do better this time. Dave will be signing somewhere in the order of 4,500 +/- times when you count the front labels, signed bookplates and whatever else he decides to sign. Whew!
3) Bonus Prints and the Ubiquitous Gold Seal: Last week I mentioned that I'd add up the number of requests to change to Emboss (9) or Back (28). That means around 85% of backers are content to have the seal embossed on the front and of the ones who want a deviation, most chose the Back option. So that's the end of the story, right? Well, not really. Read on.
During the course of printing off proofs and dropping them off at the OWH for Dave to review, he didn't like the idea that the seal would cover any significant image area. (Sean sized the first round of proofs to maximize image and fill the sheet to the extent possible). So 'after further review'... Dave instructed Sean to re-size them so that there was no appreciable image being covered by the seal and that the descriptive text and numbering would appear on the bottom right with the gold seal on the bottom left. Therefore, we now have printed proof samples with gold seals applied that I will post here for you to see how each Bonus Print will look with the seal on the front. Here they are:
As you can see, the re-sizing of the images and placement of the seal does not cover up much of the image at all. Only a corner and only on a few of the prints. We know that this is an important issue for some of you. What you see in these 21 images above, will be the default look to the Bonus Print, with one change and that change for each print is that the name of the print (without the number in brackets) as I have indicated underneath each print, will be printed on each print in the title block area at the bottom right. It will be the first line you see, right above where it now reads "FIRST RELEASE Bonus Print".
Therefore if anyone who chose the Emboss Only or the Back location only wants to switch to the Default, you can do so by again sending me a Kickstarter message (please don't put your request in the general comments area or I may not see it) with your change request in the next 48 hours. If you are satisfied with the way they are shown, that is the Default method and location and you do NOT need to message me. Thanks. And that should 'seal' the deal on the gold seal!
There is one last item I need to mention regarding one of the Bonus Prints. If you have a really sharp eye for detail, you will have noticed that on the CANT Kickstarter Project Description Page, I classified BP-16 as a full-size print in the heading, but in the description below the image as a half-sized. I realised my error this week when I saw Sean's press-ready files and it was half-sized. It was supposed to have been classified as a half-sized print, not full. So, first of all, my apologies to all the backers who selected BP-16 as a full sized print. I'm going to contact those who are affected and offer them ONE additional Bonus Print of their choice to make up for it. I'll do that shortly after I send out this update (after I have my supper).
4) More CAN 3 Bonus Prints Revealed: Dave has scanned some more Bonus Prints that will be available for CAN 3. Here they are with his descriptions:
"Goer" from T. Casey Brennan's "Doorway to the Gods", the story cover-featured on CEREBUS ARCHIVE (the comic book) No.12. I forgot that I had done it This Large as an experiment in how much detail you could get into an "inset" painting working digitally (Sandeep doing the actual production). It didn't really work, but it makes a nice Bonus Print, I think.
"Pathmistress" from the same story and cover. I wanted it to look "otherworldly" as if they had been transported to this very stark all-desert planet. Instead it just looks like what it is: a small water colour ink drawing scanned into a digital colour background.
Cover Image for the Previous Two BP's
THE LAST SIGNING Strange Adventures postcard (original painted art). Another example where I forgot that I had worked This Large on the original. I like the "ragged" edge to the black (which got cleaned up on the finished postcard) so we're going to leave that in!
ULTIMATE CEREBUS wraparound cover. Originally used as a variant cover on THE GUIDE TO SELF-PUBLISHING, we also ran it as the "thank you" card for the 2012 Kickstarter. VERY difficult to reproduce accurately because of the semi-translucent yellows and individually mixed blues, solid black and solid painted red. We're going to call this a "Graduate Studies" piece for Sean who, I'm sure, will Tweak It until it glows in the dark!

Ok, that's it for this week's update. More on printing progress next week.
