CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER TWO

CA$ 42,028

Purpose: to raise funds for the Restoration and Preservation -- already in progress -- of the World's Longest Graphic Novel: the 6,000-page, 16-volume CEREBUS (1977 to 2004).

Hi! I'm Dave Sim.  We're all making the attempt to keep CEREBUS going 10 years after completion. A perhaps insurmountable uphill struggle but we won't know "yes" or "no" for sure for a while yet.

Just as with the CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER ONE Kickstarter, we need to have an idea of how many people are willing to commit $79 to assist in that Restoration and Preservation effort.

It's worth noting that CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER ONE DID prove to be the RAREST CEREBUS NUMBER ONE in history: way, way, WAY below the sales of 2,000 copies on CEREBUS No.1 (1977) with 300 signed and numbered copies!

With an unbelievably generous donation of $10,000 from a Retail Patron and the active participation of less than 300 CEREBUS Patrons, we were able to pay off the botched printing of HIGH SOCIETY, the 16th printing of CEREBUS -- now in stores! -- and to keep Sean Robinson, Mara Sedlins and George Gatsis making steady forward progress on state-of-the-art restoration. Which, if you remember from last time, at my most optimistic, I estimated would take at least a year to accomplish.

We're all aware that -- in the comic-book field -- there is an invariable drop-off between a NUMBER ONE and a NUMBER TWO, so we're looking to break another precedent there, if we can: to not only prove that fewer than 300 Patrons can keep an intellectual property alive, but that they will be there -- YOU will be there -- every 90 days to assist in constructing each new base camp as we continue our ascension of this 6,000 page mountain of a graphic novel.

It's worth repeating, as well: if YOU have a reserved number, that number is yours until YOU choose to let go of it. If there IS a drop-off in pledge partners, each reserved number that moves back to "in play" will be allocated to the next person "in line".

And we have a NO QUESTIONS ASKED, NO HASSLE replacement guarantee. If there is ANY damage whatsoever to the folio or prints when you receive them, you only have to e-mail cell phone photo evidence and YOUR whole package with YOUR number will be quickly and cheerfully replaced.

Even if we get down to the Last Ten CEREBUS fans, God willing, we WILL keep going. So -- same as last time -- same as next time -- our target remains $800.

TARGET: $800

Excerpts from Dave Sim's commentary:
..... Although I look at Scorz's left hand in the bottom panel and I see that I haven't inked the bottom side of the thumb.  I not only haven't inked it, but the pencil lines are still there from over thirty years ago.  That's a pretty unique form of professionalism.  Most guys are lucky to miss erasing some pencil OR to fail to ink a line but it takes a 25-year old Dave Sim to do both in the same panel. ....

Excerpts from Dave Sim's commentary:
..... I will give myself this: I was very good at getting my characters to Act.  Getting characters to Act in a comic book is a matter of using as many as possible of the specific "givens" that make up a comic-book page simultaneously: "camera" angle, leading the reader's eye movement by composition, conveying verbal emphasis with the size and density of the lettering, the shape of the word balloon. And making sure that they're all "happening" at the same time. ....

Excerpts from Dave Sim's commentary:
..... The subject matter of this page is very Dickensian.  A hansom cab and cab driver, a grocer awoken out of a sound sleep in his nightshirt, the back door of his shop in the middle of the night.  So, it's also very Eisnerian.  And Wrightsonian -- Wrightson in his caricature mode.  If I'm picturing Dickens and I'm drawing a comic book, I'm translating that into Eisner and Wrightson. ....

Excerpts from Dave Sim's commentary:
..... Well, yes, but by treating it AS the artist AS an easy page, I'm killing the writer's gag -- or, at least, not getting full value out of it.  There's no real context established.  Servicing the gag -- giving it full value -- the point would be the frozen moment in time.  A roomful of tough guys all frozen in a moment that has been, hitherto, completely relaxed -- late night in a tough bar, everybody stewed to the gills -- where all that has changed is that they now have murderous expressions on their faces.  That takes work.  You have to draw the relaxed scene and the murderous change simultaneously.  That's where the humour is: ....

Excerpts from Dave Sim's commentary:
..... Even back then I was known for my lettering and those are pretty careless looking sound effects on the right of panel 1for someone who is known for his lettering.  This is particularly noticeable in a situation like this where the sound effects are intended to convey an "off-panel" melee -- to, in effect, stand in for it. Four sound effects: CRUNK BAF CRAK and WAK, respectively, doth not a melee make (you can quote me on that, by the way). I've also missed the opportunity to further service the "flour" gag by not having puffs of flour coming off of the sound effects.  The guys being hit with batons are covered in flour, ergo you would get "fluffy" sound effects. ....

Excerpts from Dave Sim's commentary:
..... It's very clever fakery. I will say that for it. It satisfies the average comic fan's appetite for solid black and cross-hatching.  If it doesn't have enough "eye candy" contour to be primo Will Eisner, well, maybe it's closer to Alex Toth.  Or maybe it's a new thing: What if Van Gogh had inked comic book pages?  Really spontaneous and free-wheeling. ....

Excerpts from Dave Sim's commentary:
..... Modelled as they were on Gene and Dan Day -- well, that was what made them funny. To me, personally, Gene Day sounding like Yosemite Sam was funnier than Yosemite Sam (which is really saying something: the Friz Freleng Yosemite Sam cartoons are among the funniest things on celluloid, to me, bar none).  When I told Gene on the phone that I was doing him as a CEREBUS character with Yosemite Sam's voice, he said "Mah. HE. Ro."  Without missing a beat. ....

Excerpts from Dave Sim's commentary:
.....
I mean, none of these things which are being discussed in the text actually exist: The Sepran Church, the Sepran Empire, The Cirinists, the Blood Wars.

So there's a definite trick to making it sound -- not only as if they do -- but that they are being discussed by people actually familiar with them, and for whom they constitute Actual Reality.  Instead of as cardboard cut-outs reciting what they actually are: plot points and made up dialogue. ....

Excerpts from Dave Sim's commentary:
..... VISUALLY, this sequence owes a lot to YELLOW SUBMARINE as a total visual concept and the "Sea of Green" sequence, specifically -- which was still pretty new, conceptually. Although Peter Max was not exactly still a hot commodity by 1978 it was only a decade later.
My design of the environment "answers" the same question: what would (or does) the altered drug state look like if you had to depict it?  It's definitely in the "writing about art is like dancing about architecture" end of things.  You can't actually depict an altered drug state any more than you could draw what chocolate cake tastes like. ....

Excerpts from Dave Sim's commentary:
..... One of the more important points to me is that it is very unlikely that this could have -- at the time -- been published by anyone besides a self-publisher.  It broke too many rules of What A Comic Book Is.  There are obvious "editor questions" just glaring at you.  "What's all this white space about?  This isn't a page. This is a HALF page. MAYbe."  "This is too much to read."  "Nothing happens.  Where's the conflict?  Where's the reader identification?" ....

CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER TWO folio will be signed and numbered based on the final number of copies pledged for when the four week Kickstarter campaign has ended.  The "500 available" is a very unlikely upper maximum number. All proceeds will go towards the Restoration and Preservation of the CEREBUS and HIGH SOCIETY volumes. Additional funds (if any) will go towards the Restoration and Preservation of future volumes, starting with the 1200-page CHURCH & STATE and READS.

PLEDGE ITEM: $79 plus postage/shipping costs to your region, plus all of the ADD ON's and addtional reward items. (Please refer to the "ADD ON's, ADDITIONAL REWARDS & SHIPPING COST TABLE"below to help you calculate your total pledge). For CANT, we're offering you a lot of pick and choose options, sort of a "buffet table" of choices" but make it easy for you to pledge and orderly and controllable for us to fulfill. Kickstarter is not set up for that. So here's how we are set up to do that.

There will be two Portfolio reward options (plus the $256 Comic Retail Store for 5 portfolios, like in CANO). The first Portfolio reward is if you live outside of Canada. The cost is $79 plus shipping to your region, plus all portfolio and non-portfolio add ons and additional rewards. The second Portfolio reward and is only if you live in Canada and includes the shipping cost already built in, but if you want to add additional rewards and add ons, you would use this as well. Please refer to the table below, called "ADD ON's, ADDITIONAL REWARDS & SHIPPING COST TABLE"  for the amounts to add to you pledge for the various options.

SHIPPING COSTS:
Since our experience on CANO (CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER ONE) was that shipping costs are on average 25% of the $79 reward amount, we will be adding shipping costs again in a similar manner as was done on CANO.  These are the available shipping methods and associated costs:

  • EUROPE (INCLUDING THE U.K.): $20 sea; $65 air
  • AUSTRALIA (and ASIA): $20 sea; $70 air
  • CANADA: $16 ground
  • USA: $16 ground

  • If you want a different option, please contact me (John Funk) via message and I'll price that out for you.

There will be a new Kickstarter campaign every three to four months for each successive release of a CEREBUS ARCHIVE FOLIO:

CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER THREE - WINTER 2015
The Earliest 10 pages of CHURCH & STATE I in the Cerebus Archive

CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER FOUR - SPRING 2015
The Earliest 10 pages of CHURCH & STATE II in the Cerebus Archive

CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER FIVE - SUMMER 2015
The Earliest 10 pages of JAKA'S STORY in the Cerebus Archive

You can retain your same "signed and numbered" registration number for each Folio by pledging in each quarterly campaign.
The same three 'number type' choices continue to be:

Option 1) the lowest number available and 'hold' for all future campaigns.
Option 2) a specific number (if available) and 'hold' for all future campaigns (please provide at least 3 choices, ranked in order of preference),
Option 3) the lowest number available and be put on 'standby' for an earlier number as they become available.
At the time of CANT launch, the lowest number available is 287, but many numbers above that have been taken. Check this chart for the Registration Numbers for CANO.

    ADDITIONAL REWARD ITEMS

(All of the additional reward items can be ADDED to a portfolio pledge, but ONLY the ones marked as "Stand Alone" can be pledged for without a portfolio). If ordering a portfolio, and you wish to pledge for additional reward(s), or upgraded shipping, please use the portfolio reward and add the amount required for additional rewards. If you're only pledging for a non-portfolio item, please choose that reward item directly.

    1) Headsketch - Two Options (Black or Blue Ink):

    a) ADD A FULLY-INKED (with Windsor Newton Series 7 #2 brush and SPEEDBALL SUPERBLACK ink) CEREBUS HEAD TO THE FRONT OF YOUR CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER TWO portfolio envelope. "Personalized to you" or "Just Signed and dated but not personalized to you". Your call.

You can find examples of personalised Headsketches at A Moment of Cerebus fan blogsite here and here and also here

NOTE: Headsketches are ONLY available as an "Add-On" to a portfolio pledges.

    2) CEREBUS TRADE PAPERBACK ADHESIVE BOOKPLATES - Unsigned, Signed or Personalised and Signed:

For CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER ONE, we offered the Sean Michael Robinson version of the 30% tone fill, but for CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER TWO we are offering the George Peter Gatsis version of the 30% tone fill. This is what it looks like - notice the difference between George's and Sean's from CANO (see actual CANO bookplate scans at the URL's below).
Trade Paperback Bookplate - 30% tone by George Peter Gatsis
Trade Paperback Bookplate - 30% tone by George Peter Gatsis

For CANO we felt we offered two many variations of quantity, so we are simplifying it for CANT.

This reward is offered either as a Stand Alone item (for those who do not pledge for a portfolio) or as an ADD ON for those pledging for a portfolio (ships with portfolio). Note: for CANO, the cost of mailing these as a Stand-Alone reward outside of Canada was much more than originally thought, so we've had to add Int'l shipping to some of them as indicated here.

    a) Set of 16 bookplates, UNSIGNED - PLEDGE: $20 plus $5 Int'l Shipping on Stand-Alone reward

    b) Set of 8 bookplates, SIGNED - PLEDGE: $40 plus $5 Int'l Shipping on Stand-Alone reward

    c) Set of 16 bookplates, SIGNED - PLEDGE: $80 plus $5 Int'l Shipping on Stand-Alone reward

    d) Set of 8 bookplates, SIGNED AND PERSONALISED - PLEDGE: $100, shipping included (NOTE: Personalisation will be first name and last initial only, as this turned out to take much more time than Dave had planned on).

    e) Set of 16 bookplates, SIGNED AND PERSONALISED - PLEDGE: $140, shipping included (NOTE: Personalisation will be first name and last initial only, as this turned out to take much more time than Dave had planned on).

    3) BIRTHDAY CARD WITH CEREBUS HEAD SKETCH AND 20-MINUTE HAPPY BIRTHDAY PHONE CALL FROM ME

(OFFER GOOD FROM NOVEMBER 1st 2014 to OCTOBER 31, 2015)

Just let me know when your birthday is and I'l call YOU. If I don't get you, I'll leave a call-back time or two to pick from until I DO get you. Telephone tag with Dave Sim on your birthday! What could be cooler than that? We can talk about whatever you want to talk about (got a CEREBUS question that's been bugging you for years? Now's your chance to ask it!) At the very least, I can tell you "Here's where I am on your birthday: here's exactly what I'm working on today." Or I'll just sing Happy Birthday to you! (if you're into that).

This reward is offered as either a STAND-ALONE item (for those who do not pledge for a portfolio) or as an ADD-ON for those pledging for a portfolio.

PLEDGE AMOUNT: $99 (STAND ALONE - Please use the reward set up for this; ADD-ON to portfolio - Please add this amount to your porfolio pledge). Shipping is included.

Here's a testamonial from M.E. who purchased this reward for a friend on CANO:
    "Hey!
Everything went absolutely wonderful! Dave went above and beyond! "C" was actually so shocked he couldn't think of anything to say (well he mumbled a little bit). Dave was kind enough to let him collect his thoughts and called back! Thanks so much to the both of you! Dave for taking the time to do this and you for all you help organizing this. You both made my friends birthday one i don't think he will soon forget!"

    4) TOUR OF THE OFF-WHITE HOUSE and FOLLOW-ME-TO-WORK DAYS.

This one's a bit pricey, considering that you have to get yourself here AND pay for your meals and accommodations (I'll be happy to make the reservations at either the Walper Terrace Hotel -- King and Queen Streets -- or the newly refurbished Crowne Plaza Hotel -- King and Benton Streets -- downtown both within walking distance of the Off-White House).

Basically you get to spend the day (or two or three) here, first getting a Tour of the Off-White House (Hey! You're the folks who paid for it, the least I can do is let some of you see it while I'm still alive) and then you get to follow me around on my subsequent work day (or two or three).

No idea what I'll be doing: depends on the day(s). Probably writing and drawing THE STRANGE DEATH OF ALEX RAYMOND and doing basic business stuff. Anytime I'm not doing "thinking" work or if I'm going to do the banking or going to the post office or shopping for groceries, I'll be happy to answer any questions you have and talk about anything you want to talk about.

PLEDGE AMOUNT: $900 (STAND ALONE - Please use the reward set up for this; ADD-ON to portfolio - Please add this amount to your porfolio pledge).

NEW FOR CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER TWO: BONUS PRINTS!

Every Friday, beginning with the launch of CANT, we'll be unveiling four additional Bonus Prints that you can add to your Portfolio Package. Once we achieve the $800 funding (total pledge) goal, you may ADD an additional 2 prints to your portfolio. The next goal has been set at $4,000, and when that funding (total pledge) goal has been achieved, you'll be able to ADD 4 prints (2 for the first level and 2 for the current level) to your portfolio, and then we'll be setting the next goal. Each successive goal will be established depending on how quickly (or how slowly) it takes to reach the next goal. We'll update the schedule below each time a new threshold has been achieved:

Bonus Print Availability and Unveiling Schedule

Pledge: $9 per bonus plate ($8 plus $1 per plate additional shipping)

Bonus Print Availability Schedule - ALL Bonus Prints for CANT Are Now Unveiled; Funding Has Exceeded the $33,000 Threshold - You May Pledge for Up To 10 Bonus Prints!
Bonus Print Availability Schedule - ALL Bonus Prints for CANT Are Now Unveiled; Funding Has Exceeded the $33,000 Threshold - You May Pledge for Up To 10 Bonus Prints!

NOTE: Now that we're down to the final days of the campaign, we recommend that you pledge for all of the bonus prints that you want, up to the maximum of 10. At the end of the funding period, I'll ask the necessary questions in the survey, so that you can let me know exactly which ones you selected for yourself.

PLEDGE AMOUNT: ADD $9 ($8 + $1 to cover additional shipping costs) to your portfolio pledge for EACH Bonus Print UP TO the maximum number of Bonus Prints allowed (see table).

Now then, here are the first 18 Bonus Prints. You may ADD as many as 10 of them to your portfolio pledge.

The Bonus Prints will be the SAME size as the ten basic portfolio plates and printed in colour (or b&w if no colours are present) on the SAME 12 pt. cardstock as the ten basic plates. Note that there are a small number that we've deemed to be of too low a resolution to print full-size. Risks and challenges

Basically, at this point, the biggest risk is that not enough people who participated in CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER ONE will come back for NUMBER TWO. And NUMBER THREE. And NUMBER FOUR. We're hoping that the Bonus Items (also watch the video if you haven't yet) will help solidify repeat pledges and bring in new backers as well.

It's really a very basic campaign and a basic package that we'll be carrying over, so hopefully this time we can get closer to having everything delivered to the pledge partners in a period closer to the target of 60 days and not 90+ days which CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER ONE turned out to be.

BIRTHDAY CARD WITH CEREBUS HEAD SKETCH AND 20-MINUTE HAPPY BIRTHDAY PHONE CALL FROM ME (OFFER GOOD FROM NOVEMBER 1st, 2014 TO OCTOBER 31, 2015).

TOUR OF THE OFF-WHITE HOUSE and FOLLOW-ME-TO-WORK DAYS. Date and time to be mutually scheduled.
