CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER THREE (CAN3)

CA$ 39,633

Purpose:  to raise funds for the Restoration and Preservation -- already in progress -- of The World's Longest Graphic Novel: the 6,000-page, 16-volume CEREBUS (1977 to 2004).

Hi! I'm Dave Sim. In many ways, CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER TWO proved to be an even bigger surprise than CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER ONE, which is really saying something! With a slight drop-off in the number of copies ordered -- 290 instead of 300 -- it's now officially the rarest CEREBUS publication ever issued by Aardvark-Vanaheim.

However, with the addition of the wildly popular Bonus Prints, CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER TWO actually generated $9,000 more in pledges.

They say "make hay while the sun shines" so that's what we're doing: expanding the parameters of our Restoration and Preservation efforts, financed by our Pledge Partners to include:

1) the restoration of each CEREBUS trade paperback. The latest to be completed is HIGH SOCIETY with CHURCH & STATE VOLUME ONE now in the early stages of restoration and reconstruction and high resolution scanning of the original artwork in the Cerebus Archive now finished on CHURCH & STATE VOLUME ONE and TWO and several issues of JAKA'S STORY. Next step: scanning of the original photographic negatives for pages where the original artwork is unavailable.

2) signing of all the Off-White House CEREBUS Copies and Uncirculated CEREBUS Back Issues, bagging and boarding them with full-colour CEREBUS ARCHIVE FIRST RELEASE sequentially-numbered Certificates of Authenticity: each number made available to our Pledge Partners owning that specific number.

Remember: that number is YOURS on any sequentially numbered Cerebus Archive Publication until you choose to let go of it!

3) the restoration of the Off-White House (the offices and studios where the graphic novel was produced from the early issues of JAKA'S STORY onward and my residence since 2002). So far, the crumbling half of the foundation has been brought into the 21st century with a full renovation of the basement for state-of-the-art storage of the Cerebus Archive beginning (God willing) in the spring of 2015.

I have no idea how long I'm going to be alive, but I'm determined to have as much of the Cerebus Archive preserved -- in perpetuity -- as possible before I go. So far, we have 290 Pledge Partners making that happen.

As I said last time: "Even if we get down to the Last Ten CEREBUS fans, God willing, we WILL keep going. So -- same as last time -- same as next time -- our target remains $800."

TARGET: $800

Plate #1 - CEREBUS No. 52 page 1

Excerpt from Dave Sim's commentary:

The thugs, I would describe as heavily influenced by Jules Feiffer -- which is pretty experimental as well since Feiffer is an extreme minimalist cartoonist. Is there a meeting place between extreme minimalism and illustration? For me, there not only was, there needed to be. Having established the sheer mass of the figure in panel four, I needed, technically, to "follow through" knowing that I couldn't keep drawing the thug as big as he is in panel 4 or you'd have Weird Disembodied Bicep Comics...

Excerpt from Dave Sim's commentary:

What sets Hal Foster apart from pretty much everyone else, though, is Accuracy. Everything is perfectly accurate -- which is why I've christened his style "Non-Stylized Realism" (as distinct from "Stylized Realism" and "Cartoon Realism") in THE STRANGE DEATH OF ALEX RAYMOND. My well-worn cover to CAPTAIN GEORGE'S COMIC WORLD No.5 [insert] illustrates the problem. There is no "flash" to Hal Foster's work. Looking at the nuts-and-bolts progression of this sample panel, it looks really simple to do. Which it is, in the sense that it's made up of very few elements. But it also represents an exact mix of hard work and Major Latent Talent combining into perfect execution...

Excerpt from Dave Sim's commentary:

You can see in a head-to-head comparison between the Nostalgia Press version of PRINCE VALIANT page # 289, 23 August 1942 and the same page as scanned at 300 dpi RGB from the original artwork as part of Heritage Auctions Session Two, Auction #7076, May 17, 2013 (lot #92155) [inserts] just how much of a difference there is if you're looking at the piece -- as I was -- to try to see exactly what kind of brushwork and pen work Hal Foster is using...

Excerpt from Dave Sim's commentary:

If you look up "effete" in the dictionary you can see that there's already a spectrum of meaning. "No longer fertile"; "worn out with age"; "marked by weakness or decadence"; "outmoded" ("A good humoured effete boy brought up by maiden aunts" - Herman Wouk). You can sort of hear people snarling in the background "Something WRONG with being brought up by maiden aunts?" which would probably have Wouk eviscerated publicly and browbeaten into abasing himself with a public recantation if he tried tweeting it today. Of course, I have trouble picturing Herman Wouk "tweeting" anything...

Plate #5 - CEREBUS No. 52 page 13
Plate #5 - CEREBUS No. 52 page 13

Excerpt from Dave Sim's commentary:

One of the things that I've often wondered about is if Hal Foster ever regretted his decision to separate text and illustration completely in his work. Way back in the 1970s, there was already a fair amount of discussion -- which hasn't diminished since -- about whether or not PRINCE VALIANT even qualified as a comic strip with (as I recall) a pretty even balance between "yea" and "nay". The idea being that a comic strip has to incorporate word balloons into the drawings to be a comic strip. As soon as you have the structural choice to have the pictures HERE and the words OVER THERE, then what you are doing is an illuminated manuscript...

Plate #6 - CEREBUS No. 52 page 14
Plate #6 - CEREBUS No. 52 page 14

Excerpt from Dave Sim's commentary:

Structurally, it's four three-panel comic strips, one on top of each other. Like reading four daily strips in a comic-strip collection. The reader isn't consciously thinking that's what they're doing, but it's definitely a metaphysical template in their head if they're an avid comics fan (and one of the great "givens" of doing CEREBUS was that -- because it was only sold in comic stores, it was a "given" that the reader was an avid comics fan: whomever they were)...

Plate #7 - CEREBUS No. 52 page 15
Plate #7 - CEREBUS No. 52 page 15

Excerpt from Dave Sim's commentary:

So, on page 15 what I'm trying to do is to parlay my "winnings" from the previous page. It's more actively playful. Numbered panels? Hal Foster never did numbered panels in his life. Yes, that's what makes it playful. It looks as if it's going to be complicated but a glance tells you "Oh, okay. 1-2, 1-2, 1-2, 1-2." So you're picking up speed because you're looking at one panel less per tier. Whoever you are, you're going to read two panels faster than you're going to read three panels. But you're not going to register that consciously. But unconsciously it's as if you're watching a Vaudeville routine where the humour stems from everything going faster the second time around and REALLY irritating the "mark", the fall guy, the patsy...

Plate #8 - CEREBUS No. 52 page 16

Excerpt from Dave Sim's commentary:

Full background with perspective and streaming light on a PAGE-WIDE (!) panel one. Go, man, go! I've even enlisted Deni (or was it Karen?) to do the solid blacks. I'd forgotten that. The only way I know is -- if you look at the shadow to the left of the bucket, it isn't a shadow. It's an outline of a shadow with an "x" in it indicating that it's supposed to be solid black. I'm much better at making the solid black blend in than I was the last time Deni had done it -- on issue 9...

Plate #9 - CEREBUS No. 52 page 17
Plate #9 - CEREBUS No. 52 page 17

Excerpt from Dave Sim's commentary:

I have to say that Cerebus is a really interesting character now that I'm sufficiently distant from the stories so that I forget how they go. I mean, he's a born scam artist and he improvises on the spot. If he's got you over a barrel he's never content to just leave it at that he instantly switches into "how FAR over a barrel can Cerebus get this person?" And he's obviously running up ahead, mentally. "If Cerebus says this, Silverspoon is going to say this thing over here." He's got it all worked out like a chess master...

Plate #10 - CEREBUS No. 52 page 18
Plate #10 - CEREBUS No. 52 page 18
 Excerpt from Dave Sim's commentary:

Cerebus saying "I don't know" instead of "Cerebus doesn't know". Dave isn't sure if that's a mistake. Dave does remember thinking, "Well, Cerebus would be aware of it -- that referring to yourself in the third person is a 'stupid northerner' thing. So after he had been in a major metropolitan centre like Palnu or Iest for while and had actually become Prime Minister, he'd try, consciously, to change." But, Dave is pretty sure it would be a very deeply ingrained verbal tic...

YOU CAN READ THIS ENTIRE COMMENTARY FOR ALL TEN PRINTS IN THE "NOTES" INCLUDED WITH EACH FOLIO.

___________________________________________________________

CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER THREE folio will be signed and numbered based on the final number of copies pledged for. All proceeds will go towards the Restoration and Preservation of the 1200-page CHURCH & STATE ONE and TWO, and READS and the restoration of the "Off-White House".

SHIPPING COSTS:
A new feature to Kickstarter is that rewards can now be set up with country/region specific shipping costs. So when you have selected your reward and pledged for any ADD-ON's that you're interested in, you will automatically be presented with the shipping cost for your country. Please be sure to select the country that you want your reward shipped to so that shipping costs are properly covered. This is a much improved feature and is very intuitive to use.

There will be a new Kickstarter campaign every three to four months for each successive release of a CEREBUS ARCHIVE FOLIO:

CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER FOUR (CAN4) - SUMMER 2015
The Earliest 10 pages of CHURCH & STATE II in the Cerebus Archive

CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER FIVE (CAN5) - FALL 2015
The Earliest 10 pages of JAKA'S STORY in the Cerebus Archive

You can retain your same "signed and numbered" registration number for each Folio by pledging in each campaign.
The same three 'reservation number type' choices continue to be:

Option 1) the lowest number available and 'hold' for all future campaigns.
Option 2) a specific number (if available) and 'hold' for all future campaigns (please provide at least 3 choices, ranked in order of preference),
Option 3) the lowest number available and be put on 'standby' for an earlier number as they become available.
At the time of the CAN3 launch, the lowest number available is 273, but many numbers above that have been taken. Please contact us by message if you have a specific number you want to reserve.

ADDITIONAL REWARD ITEMS

All of the additional reward items can be ADDED to a portfolio pledge, but ONLY the ones marked as "Stand Alone" can be pledged for without a portfolio. Refer to the (above) "ADD-ON's and SHIPPING COST TABLE" for a summary. Each item is detailed out below, so be sure to read through to the end.

1) BONUS PRINTS

NOTE: Bonus Prints are ONLY available as an "ADD-ON" to a portfolio pledge.

Every Friday, we'll be unveiling two FIRST RELEASE (FR) Bonus Prints that you can add to your Portfolio Package. this is shown in the right hand portion of the table below. The left hand side of the table shows how many Bonus Prints you can add at the current funding level (green) and the next target (yellow). At the present funding level ($34,000+), you can add up to 15 Bonus Prints and when we reach $42,028 you can add ALL 31 BP's to your portfolio, and then we'll be setting the next goal. Each successive goal will be established depending on how quickly (or how slowly) it takes to reach the next goal. We'll update the schedule below each time a new threshold has been achieved.

Bonus Print Availability and Unveiling Schedule

Pledge: $9 per bonus plate ($8 plus $1 per plate additional shipping)
Bonus Print (BP) Availability Schedule - Funding has passed the $34,000 mark, therefore you may add 15 Bonus Prints. Once $42,028 in funding has been reached, you may pledge for ALL 31 Bonus Prints from the First Release and/or Second Release BP lists.

EXAMPLE: Let's assume that the funding level reaches $34,250, thereby surpassing the $34,000 threshold in the table above. At that level, you may pledge for 15 Bonus Prints from the total pool of 31 BP's (10 FR + 21 SR + 0 LC).

We will continue to UNVEIL 2 FR BP's every Friday (see schedule above) until all 10 FR BP's have been unveiled. The unveiling is NOT dependent on level of funding and targets (thresholds); it happens according to the preset schedule. However, the maximum number of BP's that you can add to (each of) your portfolio(s) is entirely dependent on the funding level.
Dave Sim has, however, promised that if the funding for CAN3 exceeds the $42,028 raised in CANT, then ALL 31 of the BP's are available to be added to your portfolio!

BONUS PRINT RELEASE SCHEDULING: This is an important topic to understand, particularly if you are interested in adding as many BP's as possible to your collection. There are 3 stages of releasing Bonus Prints as explained here:

1) FIRST RELEASE (FR): A First Release Bonus Print is a very Limited Edition print that is uniquely different from the other two types and has the following features: i) signed by Dave Sim, ii) has a serial number and the limited run quantity printed on it, and iii) it has a gold foil seal embossed onto it with the inscription: CEREBUS ARCHIVE FIRST RELEASE. That makes it very rare! You can see some examples in this CANT update. Each CEREBUS ARCHIVE campaign will feature a brand new set of 10 FR BP's, with the previous 10 dropping to SECOND RELEASE (SR) status.
2) SECOND RELEASE (SR): These are the previous campaign's 10 FR BP's (for CAN3 there will be 21 because we needed to 'seed' the BP collection with more than 10 to have a good selection). What that means is that all SR BP's are part of the combined pool of BP's to choose from. They are different from FR BP's in that they will be signed by Dave Sim, but NOT numbered, nor will they have an embossed gold seal.
3) LAST CHANCE (LC): These are the previous campaigns 10 SR BP's and are also part of the combined pool of BP's to choose from (for CAN3 there will not be any LC BP's since there were no SR BP's in the last campaign to cascade down). That means in CAN4, the current 21 SR BP's will become LC BP's. They are similar to SR BP's  in that they will be signed by Dave Sim, but NOT numbered, nor will they have an embossed gold seal. They will be retired from the active BP inventory when the given campaign ends. However, Dave wants you to know that Last Chance does NOT mean "Never Say Bonus Print Again" (apologies to James Bond fans everywhere. They could be issued again at some future time in some as of yet unknown format.

Note that ALL BP's are the same cost regardless of being a FR, SR or LC!

The Bonus Prints will be the SAME size (approximately 11" x 17") as the ten basic portfolio plates and printed in colour (or b&w if no colours are present) on the SAME 12 pt. cardstock as the ten basic plates. Note that there are a number of SR BP's that we've deemed to be of too low a resolution to print full-size. Those will be identified as Half-Sized  2 for 1's (meaning they will be printed half size and you get two of that group for a $9 pledge). All FR BP's from CAN3 forward will be Full-Size.

5) BIRTHDAY CARD WITH CEREBUS HEAD SKETCH AND 20-MINUTE HAPPY BIRTHDAY PHONE CALL FROM ME

NOTE: This reward is available EITHER as an "ADD-ON" to a portfolio pledge or as a "STAND-ALONE" pledge (reward) item.

(OFFER GOOD FROM APRIL 1st 2015 to MARCH 31, 2016)

Just let me know when your birthday is and I'l call YOU. If I don't get you, I'll leave a call-back time or two to pick from until I DO get you. Telephone tag with Dave Sim on your birthday! What could be cooler than that? We can talk about whatever you want to talk about (got a CEREBUS question that's been bugging you for years? Now's your chance to ask it!) At the very least, I can tell you "Here's where I am on your birthday: here's exactly what I'm working on today." Or I'll just sing Happy Birthday to you! (if you're into that).

This reward is offered as either a STAND-ALONE item (for those who do not pledge for a portfolio) or as an ADD-ON for those pledging for a portfolio.

PLEDGE AMOUNT: $99 (STAND ALONE - Please use the reward set up for this; ADD-ON to portfolio - Please add this amount to your portfolio pledge). Shipping is included.

                                                                                                               .

6) TOUR OF THE OFF-WHITE HOUSE and FOLLOW-ME-TO-WORK DAYS

NOTE: This reward is available EITHER as an "ADD-ON" to a portfolio pledge or as a "STAND-ALONE" pledge (reward) item.

This one's a bit pricey, considering that you have to get yourself here AND pay for your meals and accommodations (I'll be happy to make the reservations at either the Walper Terrace Hotel -- King and Queen Streets -- or the newly refurbished Crowne Plaza Hotel -- King and Benton Streets -- downtown both within walking distance of the Off-White House).

Basically you get to spend the day (or two or three) here, first getting a Tour of the Off-White House (Hey! You're the folks who paid for it, the least I can do is let some of you see it while I'm still alive) and then you get to follow me around on my subsequent work day (or two or three).

No idea what I'll be doing: depends on the day(s). Probably writing and drawing THE STRANGE DEATH OF ALEX RAYMOND and doing basic business stuff. Anytime I'm not doing "thinking" work or if I'm going to do the banking or going to the post office or shopping for groceries, I'll be happy to answer any questions you have and talk about anything you want to talk about.

This ADD-ON has more information at this A Moment of Cerebus Blog Page. All of the available prints have sold out.

Risks and challenges

Basically, at this point, the biggest risk is that not enough people who participated in CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER ONE and TWO will come back for NUMBER THREE. And NUMBER FOUR. And NUMBER FIVE. We're hoping that the Bonus Items will help solidify repeat pledges and bring in new backers as well.

It's really a very basic campaign and a basic print package that we'll be carrying over, yet the logistical complexity of the many options you can choose from (e.g. - type and quantity of Bonus Prints, type of headsketch, bookplates, etc.) requires a lot of planning, organising and execution, but we're getting further along 'learning curve'. Each time out we're also setting internal goals to have everything shipped out in a timeframe that's getting closer to 60 days than the 90+ days that it has taken with CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER ONE and TWO.

However, we do not compromise on quality, either in print or in execution of accurate fulfillment. We offer a 100% no-hassle, replacement or money-back guarantee if there is anything damaged, missing or if the quality is simply not up to your expectation! Each and every Pledge Partner can bank on that guarantee!

BIRTHDAY CARD WITH CEREBUS HEAD SKETCH AND 20-MINUTE HAPPY BIRTHDAY PHONE CALL FROM ME (OFFER GOOD FROM APRIL 1st, 2015 TO MARCH 31, 2016).

TOUR OF THE OFF-WHITE HOUSE and FOLLOW-ME-TO-WORK DAYS. Date and time to be mutually scheduled.
