A FOLIO OF THE TEN EARLIEST PAGES IN THE CEREBUS ARCHIVE WITH COMMENTARY BY DAVE SIM

About this project

Purpose: to raise funds for the Restoration and Preservation -- already in progress -- of the World's Longest Graphic Novel: the 6,000-page, 16-volume CEREBUS (1977 to 2004).

Hi! I'm Dave Sim.  I'm making the attempt to keep CEREBUS going 10 years after completion. A perhaps insurmountable uphill struggle but we won't know "yes" or "no" for sure for a while yet.

I needed to have an idea of how many people are willing to commit $79 to assist in that Restoration and Preservation so I've been accepting reservations for CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER ONE (signed and numbered edition ONLY available here on Kickstarter) from the 2012 Kickstarter partners and Tim W's A Moment of Cerebus website (momentofcerebus.blogspot.com) this past week.  Today, April 30th (Happy Birthday, Jeff Seiler! who has reserved #301) as I'm typing this, we're at 114 people.  80 from Kickstarter and 34 from A Moment of Cerebus.

The good news is, even if all of those people actually come through, this will be the RAREST CEREBUS NUMBER ONE in history, way, way WAY below the sales of 2,000 copies on CEREBUS No.1 (1977)!

Bottom line, we had a thoroughly botched (George and Sean are still woking actively to "unbotch" it) restoration of the CEREBUS and HIGH SOCIETY volumes and now have to pay off the printer to get back to Square One.  Around $15,000 to $20,000 depending on what they'll settle for. So, the not-so-good news is even if everyone who has reserved a number actually participates, once you deduct all of the expenses, the 114 copies will pay only about one quarter of the printing bill.

I'm willing to keep going with this.  I know CEREBUS is important to those 114 people, so I'm willing to do CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER TWO, NUMBER THREE, NUMBER FOUR, NUMBER FIVE...whatever it takes to get the printing bill paid off.  And then start getting quotes from other printers and getting sample signatures printed, to make sure future CEREBUS fans are getting the best printed trade paperbacks possible.

But, you have to admit that it's an uphill struggle that I don't think the word "insurmountable" understates.  If we can't do it, we can't do it. OR if it takes a year or two of quarterly Kickstarter campaigns with fewer and fewer people pledging each time...well, at least all of those people will have the absolute rarest LAST CEREBUS ARCHIVE signed and numbered printing. :)

That's why I selected a relatively low but realistic target of $800.  I'll keep doing this even if we get down to the Last Ten Cerebus fans and it takes a decade or more to get that printing bill paid off.

This is what we're going to be trying to do over the course of the next thirty days.

TARGET: $800

PLEDGE ITEM: $79 plus postage/shipping costs to your region. (Please choose the reward that MATCHES your country with your carrier choice). Note: for shipments within Canada, shipping costs have been added to the $79 due to the way that Kickstarter handles domestic shipping. They are priced at $95 and $98, BUT that includes the shipping costs. For all other countries, the cost will show as $79 and there will be a shipping charge added (per the amount listed in the Reward Item text) at time of payment. Bottom line: the cost to anyone on the globe is $79 CAD PLUS shipping to your address with a choice of two (or more) carriers and/or service levels.

Excerpts from Dave Sim's commentary:

"This is the earliest piece of published CEREBUS artwork in the Cerebus Archive, measuring 11.5 x 17.5 inches. The idea had been to have a third item to sell on our convention table in Toronto along with CEREBUS No.1 and the 'just published' No.2"… "Gaelic borders are really a test of artistic focus and patience"…"I wanted to translate Frazetta's oil paint effects into Barry Windsor-Smith pen lines"…"if you close off solutions to your rendering and printing problems…and ignore what your solutions are going to result in, you're going to end up with a very amateurish finished product."

"…marks the second time that Cerebus wore his idiosyncratic black vest (an idea I got from the black leather vest that was one of Gene Day's most frequently worn items of clothing: influencing me personally and creatively, I bought a vest just like it which I still own even though I haven't worn it for years"…"I didn't have to focus on what parts of the figures and backgrounds should be done with brush"…"There's also some use of the Hunt 102 in the captain's eyebrow at the extreme right, his beard in the bottom right corner (page 5 panel 6)"…"how much of the artwork could I do with rapidographs and just filling in solid black? Or, put another way, how much did I have to do with the Hunt 102 to make it look as if the whole page was done with the Hunt 102?"…"How do you prove this many years later that something is your property when the other person has 'owned' it for a couple of decades?"

Excerpts from Dave Sim's commentary:

"Of course when you said 'hologram' what everyone pictured was hologram projection, a feature of late 1970s science fiction movies, not fuzzy, yellow, glowing little sculptures that didn't move and were only visible within a narrow sight window"…"it's a large Cerebus, probably, the largest I had drawn to that point"…"you'll also notice that Cerebus' top medallion has been patched.  When I was peeling off the excess tone, half the medallion came with it."

Excerpts from Dave Sim's commentary:

"Marshall Rogers had persuaded me that I needed to render Cerebus more -- up to issue 10 or so, my idea had been to keep Cerebus looking like an animation cel with just a thin line"…"In retrospect, he was wrong: what I needed was a #2 or #3. But, even there, I soured on the idea of using a brush because they were so hard to maintain"…"Duo Shade is illustration board that is pre-printed with two shades of grey, a light and a dark.  You can see that the background colour of the page is a sort of greenish-yellow"…"You can't just blob the developer on there as if you're water-colouring and blot up the excess and expect that it's going to reproduce properly"…"meant that I couldn't go in close enough to the edge of the bubbles because the developer would 'pool' in the tiny areas and go too dark."

Excerpts from Dave Sim's commentary:

"I had graduated from the strict 'two widths of rapidograph and filling in solid black with a brush' to actually rendering with the #4 brush Marshall Rogers had suggested.  It was extremely awkward"…"On this page, the cross-hatched backgrounds are all done with a broken-in Hunt 102.  The only remaining parts that aren't #4 brush are: panel 1: Lord Julius' face (the outline done with a broken-in Hunt 102 and the eyes, cheeks, nose, eyebrows and moustache with a new Hunt 102)"…"the shadow on the underside of the chin (which you can only see with the level of detail you're getting here)"…"I've whited out Lord Gorce's hair on the left and re-rendered the feathered sheen with a broken-in Hunt 102"

Excerpts from Dave Sim's commentary:

"I used what appeared to be a much finer brush because the areas of solid black are much more sharply rendered"…"a new Hunt 102 for pretty much everything else.  Instead of getting an illusion of detail from your peripheral vision, you actually get a detailed panel"…"The detail in the mask and the eyes -- obviously done with a Brand New Hunt 102 -- is pretty much unheard of in the book"… "the receding vertical lines at the top of the weird building in the foreground aren't really following the perspective lines and the vertical lines below the shadowed area -- rendered with a broken-in Hunt 102 -- are too coarse so they're interfering with the flying hat"

Excerpts from Dave Sim's commentary:

"Apart from that, structurally, it's a very good page. The two Cerebus figures in panels 1 and 2 have a perfect density to their outlines and internal rendering which you can see more clearly at 'full size'"…"The pen lines in the snow and on Weisshaupt's stocking in panel 1 actually look professional"…"The fact that the vertical lines I used to render the bricks and the solid black on the page and the fine lines are in perfect balance is still exceptional when it comes to my work"…

CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER ONE folio will be signed and numbered based on the final number of copies pledged for when the one-month Kickstarter campaign has ended.  The "500 available" is a very unlikely upper maximum number. All proceeds will go towards the Restoration and Preservation of the CEREBUS and HIGH SOCIETY volumes.  Additional funds (if any) will go towards the Restoration and Preservation of future volumes, starting with the 1200-page CHURCH & STATE and READS.

There will be a new Kickstarter campaign every quarter for each successive release of a CEREBUS ARCHIVE FOLIO:

CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER TWO - FALL, 2014
The Earliest 10 pages of HIGH SOCIETY in the Cerebus Archive

CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER THREE - WINTER 2014-15
The Earliest 10 pages of CHURCH & STATE I in the Cerebus Archive

CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER FOUR - SPRING 2015
The Earliest 10 pages of CHURCH & STATE II in the Cerebus Archive

CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER FIVE - SUMMER 2015
The Earliest 10 pages of JAKA'S STORY in the Cerebus Archive

You can retain your same "signed and numbered" number for each Folio by pledging in each quarterly campaign.

SHIPPING COSTS:
As opposed to the first Kickstarter campaign which ended up losing roughly $8,000 because of shipping costs, shipping costs will be added to each pledge on top of the $79.  These are the available shipping methods and associated costs:

  • EUROPE (INCLUDING THE U.K.):
  • AUSTRALIA (and ASIA):
  • CANADA:
  • USA:

Risks and challenges

Well, I learned a lot from the HIGH SOCIETY AUDIO DIGITAL Kickstarter campaign in 2012 which took in $64,000 and cost all of that and about $5,000 to $8,000 of my own money because it was so badly planned, particularly International shipping costs (90% of the problem).

It was also a bad idea to have someone running it who already had a full-time job so even though the campaign ended in June, by December all of the money was gone and only about two-thirds of the items had shipped. I ended up getting three HUGE cartons of pledge items back from the fulfillment guy in March of 2013 that I had thought had all shipped three months before and had to spend three months FULL time finding out who hadn't gotten what and shipping them what was missing. All at International priority postal rates that ranged from $45 to $75 depending on the destination.

That's why this time there is only the one item, everything has been costed out, packaging, shipping, weight, International, US and structured in such a way that all of the pledge items will be shipping within sixty days of the end of the campaign.

I'll tackle any setback this time the way I tackled them last time: fixing any problem that comes up as soon as I'm aware of it.

Only this time, with a full-time fulfillment guy who will be keeping me updated on a daily basis.

FAQ

  • Yes. Email 'cerebusarchive [at] geps [dot] ca' right now to reserve your print number. Specify whether you want:
    - the lowest number available and 'hold' for all future campaigns;
    - the lowest number available and be put on 'standby' for an earlier number as they become available; or
    - a specific number (if available) and 'hold' for all future campaigns.
Remember to confirm your reservation with a Kickstarter pledge to guarantee receiving your prints!

  • Due to the fact that the process for receiving your requests is a non-automated, manual, offline task, there's no practical way to keep an accurate, live, published list. Even if a list was published, it would be out of date as fast as the pledges come in.

However, what we can do is post an update to the CURRENT lowest number available along with the date/time. We'll update this as best we can, with the goal of it being approximately every 10. That gives folks at least a rough idea.

    So here goes.....

As of May 30 at 7:00 pm EDT the LOWEST reservation number available is #226.

Suggestion: if you want a specific number, please list at least 5 choices, ranked in order of preference, and if those are not available, then let me know if you'll accept the lowest number HOLD or STAND-BY. Otherwise, I'll ask you for more choices (should be rare if you supply 5 choices or more).

Depending on the response, this might be the ONLY time that I offer this. Just let me know when your birthday is and I'l call YOU. If I don't get you, I'll leave a call-back time or two to pick from until I DO get you. Telephone tag with Dave Sim on your birthday! What could be cooler than that? We can talk about whatever you want to talk about (got a CEREBUS question that's been bugging you for years? Now's your chance to ask it!) At the very least, I can tell you "Here's where I am on your birthday: here's exactly what I'm working on today." Or I'll just sing Happy Birthday to you! (if you're into that).

#1: TOUR OF THE OFF-WHITE HOUSE and FOLLOW-ME-TO-WORK DAYS.

Basically you get to spend the day (or two or three) here, first getting a Tour of the Off-White House (Hey! You're the folks who paid for it, the least I can do is let some of you see it while I'm still alive) and then you get to follow me around on my subsequent work day (or two or three).
No idea what I'll be doing: depends on the day(s). Probably writing and drawing THE STRANGE DEATH OF ALEX RAYMOND and doing basic business stuff. Anytime I'm not doing "thinking" work or if I'm going to do the banking or going to the post office or shopping for groceries, I'll be happy to answer any questions you have and talk about anything you want to talk about.

Date and time to be mutually scheduled.
