About

WELCOME BACK, CEREBUS PLEDGE PARTNERS!

Dave Sim 27 October 17: "Thank you all for your tremendous support on CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER SIX. It was seeming for a while there as if there would never be a CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER SEVEN, but here we are: breaking through into the Second Half of the 6,000-page graphic novel with the earliest 10 pages from Volume 7, FLIGHT!"

"We're holding the line on the $90 Canadian cover price. Unlike last time when the dollar was trading at 75 cents to the U.S. dollar, lately it's been on a roller coaster ride, surging over 80 cents and now dropping again (like a stone in the last few days) to the 78-cent range (NOW under 78 cents just since yesterday)."

"We're also sticking with the same limited shipping options since that made the fulfillment on CAN6 a LOT faster than it had been on CAN5."

"The biggest differences with this Kickstarter? Let's take a look:"

1) Everyone pledging for a portfolio will be getting AN AUTOMATIC BONUS PRINT: a size-as copy of the cover of CEREBUS No.153 in full colour (or color if you're in the US) signed by Dave Sim!

2) CRAZY-DAY DEAL OF THE DAY! Check in Day Eight Through Day Nineteen and you could score that day's ONE-OF-A-KIND CRAZY-DAY DEAL. Like what? Like the IDW CEREBUS COVERS BOOK AUTOGRAPHED BY DAVE SIM WITH A PERSONALIZED CEREBUS IN HELL CHRISTMAS CARD FOR $5 CANADIAN!!! What ELSE!!?? Check in every day between November 8 and November 19 and FIND OUT!!

3) FREE FULL-COLOUR CEREBUS IN HELL? CHRISTMAS CARD (pictured) with every PORTFOLIO PURCHASED Signed by Dave Sim (NOTE: You MUST have your survey returned by DECEMBER 8 to guarantee Christmas card delivery by Christmas)

4) "BACK ISSUE" CEREBUS ARCHIVE PORTFOLIOS. NUMBER FIVE: $130 NUMBER SIX: $110 (i.e. they go up in price by $20 each time another portfolio comes out. We will be "printing to order" from NUMBER SEVEN on. I figure it's the least I can do for these BIG TICKET items: I don't want anyone thinking that their investment in CEREBUS ARCHIVE is declining in value.)

To further speed up the fulfillment process, we'll be limiting the number of Portfolios to 250 this time around and printing, signing and packaging them WHILE the Kickstarter is on-going so, hopefully, they can ship within a week or so of the campaign coming to an end.

We want these puppies HOME FOR CHRISTMAS if possible!!

5) AARDVARK COMMENT(S) See the Comments button at the top there? I'll be answering any questions you have Monday through Thursday as the Kickstarter goes along. OPTIONAL: Identify yourself by the first issue of CEREBUS you ever read and/or how many of the CEREBUS Kickstarters you've participated in.

For Neal, for any artist, the obvious answer would always be, "Well, yes. Of course." It's very unlikely that any artist would do what is, to him, progressively less interesting work. But subjective progress on the part of the artist implies subjective distance from his best work for parts -- sometimes large parts -- of his audience.

In Neal's case, he could just "trade audiences": there were fans devoted to his Batman who would never read his X-Men and vice versa. He had a proven track record for generating sales and interest which was entirely mobile.

The same wasn't true for CEREBUS. If I moved too far from my best work (best, in the subjective view of my audience) -- which I had been doing from HIGH SOCIETY forward and which I knew I would be continuing to do -- it introduced the possibility that "the centre cannot hold": that there wouldn't be a large enough residual audience to make it to issue 300 (twelve years off in an only-vaguely-foreseeable future).

[Zolastraya she met accidentally -- "accidentally"? -- at our family doctor's office when Zee had been in need of a prescription of some kind. We (Zee and I) were sitting across from my mother in the doctor's reception area and my mother hadn't recognized me. You couldn't make that up but it was true. There were multiple instances of my mother not recognizing me in public even when she had been watching for me. I had identified myself -- "Mum -- it's me." -- and the three of us had stood in the middle of the postage-stamp-sized waiting room making stilted chit-chat until my mother had been called for her appointment. Zolastraya called after her "It was nice meeting you, Mrs Sim. I hope I'll see you again." My mother had shot her a withering glance over her left shoulder and had said nothing in response. Which had led to one of the most perplexing arguments I would ever have with my father when I remarked on it on my next visit home. "Your mother would never do that," he had informed me. As my mother sat with an entirely opaque expression on her face. Which, apropos my own experience with my mother (which I'm getting to) was the diametric opposite of reassuring]

Excerpt from Dave Sim's 10,000 word commentary available EXCLUSIVELY with the CEREBUS ARCHIVE 7 portfolio:

What I was illustrating was Cirin's devout faith in an Absolute Goddess and an equally devout faith that that Goddess guided her in all of her manifold enterprises, the purging of the Papal Library being a good, but far from unique, example. It's obviously a huge repository…

[My Real World analogue/extrapolation being twofold: a) what if the Library at Alexandria, instead of burning to the ground, had continued to exist and to be added to over the succeeding centuries? and b) is the Vatican Library in that category insofar as extremely societally-pertinent works are not being made available because they dissent from Catholic Orthodoxies?]

… and the task of reading each book an insurmountable one for any individual (a general truism of libraries: if anyone tried to read every book in any given library, they would fail and have very little time for anything else in their lives). Cirin, by her nature, extrapolates from this (what seems to her) the only logical conclusion: she has to personally flip through each book and the Goddess will guide her in doing so. If there is something beneficent in the book, the Goddess will show it to her and the book is retained. If there is something malignant in the book, the Goddess will show that to her and the book will be taken away and burned.

Cerebus No. 151 - Page 11

Excerpt from Dave Sim's 10,000 word commentary available EXCLUSIVELY with the CEREBUS ARCHIVE 7 portfolio:

This manifestation of Cirin's Matriarchal orthodoxies (Cirin would have been appalled by the burning of the Library at Alexandria or the destruction of pagan antiquities by ISIS but would be completely unable to see any analogy between that and what she was doing) is a driving force behind the Great Change which I was beginning to document. There's a definite "be careful what you wish for" quality. The Papal Library at Iest is metaphysically potent -- as a surviving Library at Alexandria would, I'm sure, be metaphysically potent in our world -- but, it seems to me that there are many different forms which metaphysical potency can take, not all of them benign. She's marauding metaphysically (my Real World analogue being the harmful "blowback" of Alexander choosing to cleave the Gordian Knot with his sword rather than untying it) and so this incarnates in the Lower City with Cerebus' own marauding. What she's doing to the sum of Estarcion's human knowledge in the Papal Library at Iest, Cerebus is doing to her loyal troops.

Imperfect as her thesis is -- eradicating opposing viewpoints by burning them is (I think I'm safe in saying) a blunt-force-trauma approach to intellectual societal improvement -- the net effect, in the short term, achieves the desired result: instead of the intellectual tension inherent in the Papal Library (dissenting viewpoints, cheek-by-jowl, forming theological and philosophical stases of successively greater immensities), she unbalances the whole works in her own favour. Which is a kind of propulsive force.

But only in the short term. Her efforts lead to a massive Ascension, but the process eradicates not only the Papal Library at Iest but Iest itself. If you start by throwing out the baby with the bathwater (which is inevitable with her "Goddess, guide me" approach) whatever you end up engineering is, it seems to me, going to end up consuming successively larger and more irreplaceable metaphysical babies.

Excerpt from Dave Sim's 10,000 word commentary available EXCLUSIVELY with the CEREBUS ARCHIVE 7 portfolio:

"…to know the name of a deity at any given place or period, is far less important than to know the nature of the sacrifices that he or she was then offered." Really? Why is that? No explanation. Just the flat assertion. "The powers of the gods were continuously being redefined." Really? How? By whom? If "force of arms, blackmail and fraud" were the methodologies by which a Demon of a Mouse-fraternity "rose in divine rank" (again, no proof, just the flat assertion) how was that effected? By whom? Against whom? To what purpose (ostensible or real)?

Cerebus No. 151 - Page 18
Cerebus No. 151 - Page 18

Excerpt from Dave Sim's 10,000 word commentary available EXCLUSIVELY with the CEREBUS ARCHIVE 7 portfolio:

This Lord Julius monologue/letter dictation is the metaphysical MOTHERS & DAUGHTERS propulsive force in action again. But run through a surrealistic/supra-realistic Groucho Marxian "Hail, Hail Freedonia" filter. By way of explanation:

Surrealistic/supra-realistic was always the core "wave/particle" metaphysical property of the Lord Julius character and his Palnan context. Surrealistic in one sense: it's self-evident that you can't govern effectively by endlessly altering the fundamental structure of government itself. Supra-realistic in another sense: government, unchecked, bloats itself exponentially which, by its nature, involves the endless altering of government's fundamental structure.

So, with Lord Julius and Palnu I appeared to be satirizing something that, in actual fact, not only isn't satirical, but is closer to the Reality of the object of that satire than the Real-World portrayal of that object -- the nature of government itself; what government Is.

Excerpt from Dave Sim's 10,000 word commentary available EXCLUSIVELY with the CEREBUS ARCHIVE 7 portfolio:

[Just before the halfway point, he draws a little critter skeleton: his way of saying, I suspect, "I'm going to look like this by the time I get this grass done"].

The "sweat equity" is apparent, but it isn't measured just in pen strokes but in the TIME invested in trying to figure out what he's doing. He begins doing wider foreground grass as a kind of "white silhouette" and then renders the background grass through it. It isn't, I don't think, a satisfying solution for him -- the foreground grass is too self-evidently thicker than the background grass -- and by the time he's at the 3/4 point he's just doing foreground intersecting white vertices and rendering pen lines between them. Pure texture. Just get it done.

He would solve the problem by the time he was drawing the outdoor scenes in GOING HOME. {page 54 bottom} Fig. 09 - His solution was to move the foreground grass further into the foreground (as can be seen on the bottom of page 54) so that, by drawing it as a white silhouette, the individual blades were both wide enough to a) contrast with the background penstrokes and b) to be recognizable as individual blades in and of themselves. But that wouldn't come until years later.

[I couldn't have helped him, because I had no idea what he was trying to do. Once he solved it, I recognized both what he had been trying to do and why it hadn't been working. But seeing him figure it out in 1999 wasn't much help to him in 1991]

Cerebus No. 152 - Page 5
Cerebus No. 152 - Page 5

Excerpt from Dave Sim's 10,000 word commentary available EXCLUSIVELY with the CEREBUS ARCHIVE 7 portfolio:

Everything is so fixed in space-time that what movement there is speaks greater volumes than the actual action-filled scenes.

Bryan, without really moving, gets out of his wife's way. Their years of intimacy are readily apparent. She pretty much passes THROUGH him between panels 2 and 3. This is how long-married couples interact. You can tell that she's the dominant figure in the marriage. If he wants her to see something outside the window, he knows, without even having to think it consciously, to get out of the way so she can occupy most of the space. If the relationship wasn't that way, they would both stand sideways on either side of a mutually-perceived 50-yard line. Or, if he was the dominant partner, she would peek around him just far enough to see what he's talking about.

Look at "inside the window" positioning and "outside the window" positioning. So doubtful is she of what he's telling her that she thrusts her right arm in front of him and her left arm across the sill. That's why I say she appears to pass THROUGH him. That's what a dominant partner does with a subordinate partner or, rather, appears to do, the action taking the form of a practiced dance move.

Cerebus No. 152 - Page 10
Cerebus No. 152 - Page 10

Excerpt from Dave Sim's 10,000 word commentary available EXCLUSIVELY with the CEREBUS ARCHIVE 7 portfolio:

Bryan's wife's word balloons maintain their dominance at the top of the panels in panels 8 and 9. Panel 10 is a "draw" (although she "goes black" in a losing cause at that point) and in panel 11 Bryan prevails.

"HAIL CEREBUS"

That's what the Cirinist had FELT as it surfaced in Bryan's mind. That's the threat that had to be addressed immediately and extravagantly. That's what Bryan's wife could feel surfacing next to her and which she "goes black" and manhandles him trying to prevent. It's the tinder box spark in the kindling and it's off and running like telepathic wildfire

No idea what I'll be doing: depends on the day(s). Probably writing THE STRANGE DEATH OF ALEX RAYMOND and doing basic business stuff. Anytime I'm not doing "thinking" work or if I'm going to do the banking or going to the post office or shopping for groceries, I'll be happy to answer any questions you have and talk about anything you want to talk about.
