Purpose: to raise funds for the Restoration and Preservation -- already in progress -- of The World's Longest Graphic Novel: the 6,000-page, 16-volume CEREBUS (1977 to 2004).

Welcome, Pledge Partners to Cerebus Archive Number 5!

The biggest differences this time around are:

1) We are ONLY offering the CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER FIVE portfolio as a pledge item. We may re-introduce the BONUS PRINTS on a future Kickstarter, but right now we're trying to streamline everything to improve -- DRAMATICALLY! -- on the unconscionable seven months it took to get CAN4 out to you.

2) We're increasing the price to $90 Canadian per portfolio which means our Canadian Pledge Partners will be paying about $10 more and our U.S. Pledge Partners paying about $10 less relative to the ORIGINAL pricing on CANO (CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER ONE). International Pledge Partner rates will depend on how the "Brexit Era" UK pound and the euro are doing.

The Canadian dollar has lost a good 20% of its purchasing power since we started CEREBUS ARCHIVE so the pricing is going to be a "moving target" that will be decided at the start of each campaign based on the exchange rate at that time (75 cents on the US dollar as of today)

3) More limited shipping options. Again, we're trying to streamline everything and that includes "one-stop" shipping through CANADA POST. As always, we guarantee that we will replace any missing or damaged portfolio no questions asked.

4) There will be a much narrower window for getting your surveys in after the campaign ends. The consensus on A MOMENT OF CEREBUS when we discussed it over there seemed to be that two weeks was reasonable, so that's what we're going with.

Although these four are "carved in stone" this time around, we MAY increase the options on FUTURE Kickstarters if we can see a way of doing it that doesn't unduly increase the fulfillment period.

SINCERE apologies for the unconscionable lateness of shipping on CAN4. God willing we will improve DRAMATICALLY on the seven months you had to wait last time.

PRIMARY REWARD ITEM - CAN5 Portfolio: A folio of the ten earliest JAKA'S STORY pages in the CEREBUS ARCHIVE with commentary by Dave Sim. This is a limited edition, numbered and signed set of plates, digitally reproduced from Dave and Gerhard's original art, exactly as he drew it, with all of the blue lines, pencil lines and aging discolouration, at 100% size. Pledge $90 CANADIAN DOLLARS plus shipping costs to your country/region.

On the right, a quick sketch of Jaka's relationship with Missy. At this early stage, you can see that I toyed with the idea of making Missy's face less firmly stuffed so that -- by introducing rolls into the fabric, I could tilt the three buttons in different directions to create "expressions". It was an interesting idea but would, I decided, be self-defeating because the illustrations were going to be the "grounded in reality" element. Creating expressions in an inanimate object through visual tricks would just be distracting: what? The doll IS alive? (To read the rest of Dave Sim's 11,000-word commentary, become a CEREBUS ARCHIVE 5 Pledge Partner.)

In panel 5, she's gotten up and is exiting the bedroom as she simultaneously dons her bathrobe and prepares to flip her hair outside of it. It becomes a recurring motif in JAKA'S STORY and in the life of the character in subsequent books: leaving an environment -- any environment, in whatever context -- makes herself temporarily real to herself. It's this endlessly reiterated enactment of her traumatic departure from Palnu after the "birthday party". (To read the rest of Dave Sim's 11,000-word commentary, become a CEREBUS ARCHIVE 5 Pledge Partner.)

CEREBUS No.114 page 4

It's the first panel in the story where there isn't an implied change in circumstance and/or self-perception from the previous panel. We go from the "mid-range" head and shoulders yawn in the last panel of page 3 to a nearly full-figure shot. Did she have to fill the kettle with water? We infer so, as well as that she had to light the stove. The fact that we see none of that further emphasizes that this is -- purely -- an enactment of "a watched pot never boils". (To read the rest of Dave Sim's 11,000-word commentary, become a CEREBUS ARCHIVE 5 Pledge Partner.)

 CEREBUS No.114 page 5

"Everyone is normal until you get to know them." I wrote that years ago. The top half of the page strikes me as a good example of that. Is this, like, a regular THING with these people? And the compelled inference is, Yes it is. Why do you keep trying to talk to him when he's asleep? If you really NEED to talk to him, take some sort of action to wake him up. If you DON'T really need to talk to him, let him sleep. We infer she wants him to get up and she figures a way to do that is to make the bathwater an issue. "If you want a reasonably hot bath, you're going to have to get up very soon". (To read the rest of Dave Sim's 11,000-word commentary, become a CEREBUS ARCHIVE 5 Pledge Partner.)

CEREBUS No.114 page 6

How likely is it that the visual depiction -- which, again, is far closer to objective reality because it's me drawing what I know to be Jaka's conscious memories of her childhood or, at least, the experiential snapshot Jaka holds of those memories (which psychologists will tell you is not necessarily the same thing. We misremember any number of things that we think we Remember) -- how likely is it that the visual depiction matches Jaka's experience? Does she look as if she is being "scraped maliciously" with a "firm-bristled scrub brush" and "home-made lye soap"? And, alternatively, how much more likely is it that "Oscar" is seriously "de-gilding the lily" because it makes a better -- that is, more commercially viable -- story? Really salacious Princess Diana biographies sell much better than factually accurate ones. (To read the rest of Dave Sim's 11,000-word commentary, become a CEREBUS ARCHIVE 5 Pledge Partner.)

CEREBUS No.114 page 7

I intended the text to be suspect, contextually. If you've ever watched anyone dress a small child -- which we all have -- you're aware that there's no way to make the experience enjoyable or entertaining for the child while accomplishing the feat in a rational length of time. The intonation of the text suggests that what is being described is a species of child abuse but what is being documented factually is: this is what the experience of a child who is too young to dress themselves and is being dressed is inevitably going to be. And we all remember the experience ourselves in watching the child being dressed. Even the worst disciplined child is going to have learned "hold still" very early in their upbringing. (To read the rest of Dave Sim's 11,000-word commentary, become a CEREBUS ARCHIVE 5 Pledge Partner.)

Excerpt from Dave Sim's 11,000 word commentary available EXCLUSIVELY with the CEREBUS ARCHIVE 5 portfolio:

CEREBUS No.114 page 8

She's not even really looking for him to get a job. What she wants him to do is to go to the Market once a week and make a show of asking around about jobs and then report back to her and (more to the point) tell her interesting stories -- not of the experience of looking for work and failing to find it but, rather, of what interacting with non-aristocratic people and non-tavern people is like. She doesn't like going out in public for fear (overstated but not badly overstated) of being recognized as the Princess of Palnu but she's insanely curious about (to quote the CAMELOT song) "What Do The Simple Folk Do?" All she knows is the atypical life of a Princess and the atypical life of a tavern dancer.

CEREBUS No.114 page 9

Everything is falling apart at this point, which Jaka recognizes and Rick doesn't. Rick putting clothes on won't change or even effectively cover up the transgression implied by his metaphysically self-destructive "Both" answer. Even the fact of his needing to be TOLD to put clothes on -- his not understanding that nudity is exactly the wrong approach to take -- shows how far the relationship has moved out of its necessary marriage-long knife-edge balance in a few moments. He then compounds his mistake with a jocular remark based on "best two-out-of-three" which is really treading on metaphysically thin ice given that the source of the problem is the equally ambiguous (a species of "best two-out-of-three") "Both" reference. If we take "three" as metaphysically including the "Leave" option what he's asking for, in a metaphysical sense, is to be granted the best-two-of-the- three metaphysical options: "Have", "Take" and "Leave". A metaphysical "deal-breaker" for Jaka.

CEREBUS No.114 page 10

Everything, as I've indicated, is called into question in the text by virtue of it being written by "Oscar", but the circumstantial evidence presented on pages 10 and 11 suggests that the porridge anecdote has some basis in reality if we take it as a given that Jaka -- in emotionally traumatic moments (like the morning being depicted) -- inclines towards antithetical-to-her-life-in-Palnu behaviours comparable to the form her marriage to Rick has taken: she had been entirely dependent on others so, now, Rick had to be entirely dependent on her. In this case, making a batch of porridge which is so "un-Palnu like" that it becomes an unrecognizable (and presumably inedible) thin "porridge soup".

CEREBUS No.114 page 11

Everything is going "out of whack" by this point as evidenced by the dramatic diminishment of them both in panel two after Rick has, rather heroically, attempted to engineer a more light-hearted "second entrance" that raises them both and endeavours to bring them into husband-and-wife-style physical proximity to each other. Jaka's reaction is automatic and non-verbal: she magnifies herself and divides herself in half for the first time since page 4. Even as she imagines herself bigger than Rick and walking away from him, she struggles to keep herself at his height. Like I say, "out of whack". Seriously "out of whack. (To read the rest of Dave Sim's 11,000-word commentary, become a CEREBUS ARCHIVE 5 Pledge Partner.)

Risks and challenges

CAN5 is the most stripped-down, basic campaign so far. We're trying to reduce the logistical complexity AND delivery time of the prints. However, we do not compromise on quality, either in print or in execution of accurate fulfillment. We offer a 100% no-hassle, replacement or money-back guarantee if there is anything damaged, missing or if the quality is simply not up to your expectation! Each and every Pledge Partner can bank on that guarantee!

No idea what I'll be doing: depends on the day(s). Probably writing THE STRANGE DEATH OF ALEX RAYMOND and doing basic business stuff. Anytime I'm not doing "thinking" work or if I'm going to do the banking or going to the post office or shopping for groceries, I'll be happy to answer any questions you have and talk about anything you want to talk about.
