Sales on the DAVE SIM'S COLLECTED LETTERS volumes were so low (how low WERE they?) They were SO LOW that there was no way to keep going with them. A fact which wasn't discovered until most of the cover for the third volume was completed.

NOW for the first time COLLECTED LETTERS VOL.3 is being made available as a pledge item -- all 157 pages of letters written by Dave Sim between August and October 2004, getting caught up on his one-year backlog of mail -- including letters to comic-book celebrities like Chester Brown, Neil Gaiman and Rick Veitch and ALL of the tongue-in-cheek form letters sent to "Neil Gaiman's CHILDREN OF THE BLOG"…

[Sim had offered to send an autographed copy of a CEREBUS issue with the parody of SANDMAN to any Neil Gaiman fan writing him an ACTUAL letter and mailing it to him -- each day's batch of free comic books was sent with a different autographed form letter].

…COLLECTED LETTERS VOL.3 includes a CEREBUS DIGITAL MACRO-PRINT of the uncompleted 15x20 inch wraparound PRETTY GIRLS & OTHER SUBJECTS cover with all the INCREDIBLE DETAIL you've come to expect from CEREBUS ARCHIVE on KICKSTARTER.

$15 e-mailed to you directly!

Purpose: to raise funds for the Restoration and Preservation -- already in progress -- of The World's Longest Graphic Novel: the 6,000-page, 16-volume CEREBUS (1977 to 2004).

Hi! Dave Sim, here.

To you, the last few hundred CEREBUS fans, Welcome Back!

AND welcome to any new CEREBUS fans joining us for the first time…or RE-joining us.

(Is there such a thing as a NEW CEREBUS fan? No idea! But joining our Kickstarter team for the first time is Eric B. who's going to be helping us to develop a more in-depth "read" of our stats: so next time I'll be able to say "Welcome back XXX number of CEREBUS fans" and "welcome to the X number of new CEREBUS fans who joined us last time"…)

(…AND "So long to the XX number of CEREBUS fans who have left": always better to face Reality head-on, eh?)

It's an interesting fact attached to CEREBUS ARCHIVE on Kickstarter that each successive portfolio becomes the RAREST Aardvark-Vanaheim publication as soon as it's released.

  • 300 CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER ONE
  • 290 CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER TWO
  • 261 CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER THREE

This is the reason that I set a target of $800 -- the equivalent of ten portfolios -- on each Kickstarter campaign:

a) we have no idea where "the bottom" is. 250? 200? 175?

b) the "Last CEREBUS Fans standing" should be rewarded for their endurance! All the way down to the last ten if it comes to that!

I'm pretty confident that the longest English-language graphic novel can't just be "wished away" by those who -- for whatever reason -- want me or CEREBUS or both of us to just GO AWAY!

But that doesn't mean there isn't some "tough sledding" ahead. It's been "tough sledding" since CEREBUS came to an end 11 years ago…and I'm pretty sure the rest of MY life is going to be "tough sledding".

MOST of my time is taken up assuring that everything attached to CEREBUS -- except me, that is -- is RESTORED and PRESERVED IN PERPETUITY and that is definitely starting to happen, with your generous assistance. SOA! SAVE OUR AARDVARK!

Will YOU be one of the Last Cerebus Fans when we finally "bottom out"?

And what will be the ABSOLUTE RAREST CEREBUS ARCHIVE portfolio you own when we get to that point?

God only knows! Literally!

Let's roll!

PRIMARY PLEDGE (REWARD) ITEM - Portfolio: A folio of the ten earliest CHURCH & STATE II pages in the CEREBUS ARCHIVE with commentary by Dave Sim. This is a limited edition, numbered and signed set of plates, digitally reproduced from Dave and Gerhard's original art, exactly as he drew it, with all of the blue lines, pencil lines and aging discolouration, at 100% size. Pledge $79 CAD plus shipping costs to your country/region. See details above for ADD-ON's to the Portfolio that you can pledge for and have shipped out, together, with your portfolio reward.

Excerpt from Dave Sim's 11,000 word commentary available EXCLUSIVELY with the CEREBUS ARCHIVE 4 portfolio:

That meant that Gerhard had the full range of lines that he specialized in -- 40% to 50% black -- to put in where he wanted.

It took him a while to learn to spot in blacks, but that was really just a matter of coming up with an instruction that he could See: which turned out to be "shore up the corners. Picture the panel borders as if they're a flimsy building material and you need to put in enough solid black -- strategically -- to keep the structure solid. Pen lines are okay but they don't reinforce the page, structurally, the way solid black does."

Relative to his own drawing inclinations, this was getting the cart before the horse: what he wanted to do was to draw a believable background -- a background with a specific vanishing point and wooden beams placed at specific architectural intervals -- and then ink THAT according to what it would actually look like if you were looking at it.

But, by this point he's getting it. As you can see in panel 2 with the Dirty Drew figure, he's put an area of solid black behind the solid white and then enhanced it with areas of dark cross-hatching. The solid black shores up the panel border on the left and the square word balloon.

Excerpt from Dave Sim's commentary:

Speaking personally, the prayer component of my faith isn't like this. It just seems redundant to me to tell an omniscient Being what it is that I'm going through. For starters, compared to God's perfect knowledge, how could I even PRETEND to know what I was going through? let alone describe it accurately? OR make a remotely useful suggestion as to what I think should be done about it? The only thing I could say for certain is -- whatever it is -- I need to get through it as good-naturedly as I can: even -- make that especially -- when I'm not inclined to be good-natured.

To paraphrase Gilbert Shelton: "a good nature will get you through times of ill fortune better than a good fortune will get you through times of ill nature."

Excerpt from Dave Sim's commentary:

The band had a hot-plate which was against the rules, but no one said anything, the same as no one remarked on the two foreign nationals with full-sized drawing boards in their rooms.

We had a water-fight in the hall one night about which I remember nothing apart from the fact that a) when I woke up, one of their saucepans was in my room (oh, wow, that really did happen, then) and b) I had a splitting headache. Oh, right. Kamikazes. They had introduced me to a drink called a Kamikaze. Good name for it. I barely crawled to the drawing board for my day's work and crawled back to bed two feet away. Probably thinking "This hotel-room thing goes good with Kamikaze over-indulgence: the bed is always Right There." The next night I limped into the lounge and took an innocuous place on the upper level -- AWAY from the band -- where I planned to spend the night nursing One Small Draft Beer.

All three of them, grinning from ear-to-ear launched into Jimmy Buffet's "Wasting Away Again in Margaritaville" with the lyric changed to "Wasting Away in Kamikazeland".

Revenge, I thought, smiling a sickly-24-hours-later-still-hung-over-and-rueful smile back at them. I…must…have revenge.

Excerpt from Dave Sim's commentary:

The Light figures prominently in CEREBUS as it tends to in all forms of mysticism and otherworldliness. The division between the Darkness and the Light is the primary schism in the first chapter of the First Book of Moshe.

It's also a primary division/separation everywhere in the universe: you have the hard vacuum of space and then you have stars which are extremely small (relative to the vast reaches of the hard vacuum, I mean) generators of their own incandescence. Ideation itself is portrayed, iconically, in comic art with a light bulb going on over someone's head. Higher, more efficacious and insightful states of spiritual and intellectual awareness are described as enlightenment and those in possession of it as Illuminati. To the extent that it's powered by "on board" electrical energy, the brain itself -- in any energy-based means of viewing its profile -- could be described as a "big round glowing white strange thing". ____________________________________________________________________________

Excerpt from Dave Sim's commentary:

I was pretty unsophisticated. Make that REALLY unsophisticated. In so many ways:

It was years later -- literally, in my mid-40s -- that I figured out that they were Dazzlingly Beautiful because they were EXTREMELY YOUNG women: university students. Gainesville was a university town and Kitchener wasn't. I could have just gone "next door" to Waterloo which IS a university town.

The night club was closed down even as I was putting my "plan" into effect. See, the reason the girls were Dazzlingly Beautiful (I finally figured out) was that they were underage. It's a not-uncommon syndrome among nightclubs -- and a good reason to stay away from nightclubs period.

ALL nightclubs face the problem of underage girls getting "tarted up" so they look older, using fake ID. In retrospect, the club I was in had probably gone totally "off the leash" and it was just a matter of time before they were caught at it and closed down. Word does tend to spread in a hurry among underage girls when a club goes "off the leash" and the club becomes REALLY popular. It was certainly packed to the rafters the night we were there with a ratio of about 70% female-to- 30% male population.

In retrospect, a serious DUH!

There will be a new Kickstarter campaign every (approximately) four months for each successive release of a CEREBUS ARCHIVE FOLIO:

CEREBUS ARCHIVE NUMBER FIVE (CAN5) - WINTER 2016 - The Earliest 10 pages of JAKA'S STORY in the Cerebus Archive.

You can retain your same "signed and numbered" registration number for each Folio by pledging in each campaign. The same 'registration number type' choices continue to be:

Option 1) Your CAN3 portfolio number (HOLD).

Option 2) Your CAN3 portfolio number, OR a lower number if available (STAND-BY).

Anyone may request a higher number during any campaign, however, you lose your previous lower number if you choose to do that. Contact us via message if you wish to do so.

The lowest available number at this time is 221.

ADDITIONAL REWARD ITEMS

All of the additional reward items can be ADDED to a portfolio pledge, but ONLY the ones marked as "Stand Alone" can be pledged for without a portfolio. Refer to the (above) "ADD-ON's and SHIPPING COST TABLE" for a summary. Each item is detailed out below, so be sure to read through to the end.

1) BONUS PRINTS

NOTE: Bonus Prints are ONLY available as an "ADD-ON" to a portfolio pledge.

BONUS PRINT RELEASE SCHEDULING:

This is an important topic to understand, particularly if you are interested in adding as many BP's as possible to your collection. There are 3 stages of releasing Bonus Prints as explained here:

1) FIRST RELEASE (FR): A First Release Bonus Print is a very Limited Edition print that is uniquely different from the other two types and has the following features: i) signed by Dave Sim, ii) has a serial number and the limited run quantity printed on it, and iii) it has a gold foil seal embossed onto it with the inscription: CEREBUS ARCHIVE FIRST RELEASE. That makes it very rare! You can see some examples in this CANT update. Each CEREBUS ARCHIVE campaign will feature a brand new set of 10 FR BP's, with the previous 10 dropping to SECOND RELEASE (SR) status.

2) SECOND RELEASE (SR): These become the previous campaign's 10 FR BP's. What that means is that all SR BP's are part of the combined pool of BP's to choose from. They are different from FR BP's in that they will be signed by Dave Sim, but NOT numbered, nor will they have an embossed gold seal.

3) LAST CHANCE (LC): These are the previous campaigns SR BP's and are also part of the combined pool of BP's to choose from. That means in CAN4, the 21 SR BP's from CAN3 will become LC BP's. They are similar to SR BP's in that they will be signed by Dave Sim, but NOT numbered, nor will they have an embossed gold seal. They will be retired from the active BP inventory when the given campaign ends. However, Dave wants you to know that Last Chance does NOT mean "Never is Forever". They could be issued again at some future time in some as of yet unknown format.

Note that ALL BP's are the same cost regardless of being a FR, SR or LC!

Every Friday, we'll be unveiling two FIRST RELEASE (FR) Bonus Prints that you can add to your Portfolio Package. this is shown in the right hand portion of the table below. The left hand side of the table shows how many Bonus Prints you can add at the current funding level (green) and the next target (yellow). At the present funding level ($29,00), you can add up to 15 Bonus Prints and when we reach $39,633 you can add up to ALL 41 BP's to your portfolio, and then we'll be setting the next goal. Each successive goal will be established depending on how quickly (or how slowly) it takes to reach the next goal. We'll update the schedule below each time a new threshold has been achieved.

Bonus Print Availability and Unveiling Schedule

Bonus Print (BP) Availability Schedule - Funding has passed the $29,000 mark, therefore you may add up to 15 Bonus Prints. Once $39,633 in funding has been reached, you may pledge for up to ALL 41 Bonus Prints
Bonus Print (BP) Availability Schedule - Funding has passed the $29,000 mark, therefore you may add up to 15 Bonus Prints. Once $39,633 in funding has been reached, you may pledge for up to ALL 41 Bonus Prints

EXAMPLE: Let's assume that the funding level reaches $29,000, thereby surpassing the $20,000 threshold in the table above. At that level, you may pledge for 15 Bonus Prints from the total pool of 41 BP's (10 FR + 10 SR + 21 LC). We will continue to UNVEIL 2 FR BP's every Friday (see schedule above) until all 10 FR BP's have been unveiled. The unveiling is NOT dependent on level of funding and targets (thresholds); it happens according to the preset schedule. However, the maximum number of BP's that you can add to (each of) your portfolio(s) is entirely dependent on the funding level.

The Bonus Prints will be the SAME size (approximately 11" x 17") as the ten basic portfolio plates and printed in colour (or b&w if no colours are present) on the SAME 12 pt. cardstock as the ten basic plates. Note that there are a number of LC BP's that we've deemed to be of too low a resolution to print full-size. Those will be identified as Half-Sized 2 for 1's (meaning they will be printed half size and you may choose two of that group for each $9 pledge). All FR BP's from CAN3 forward will be Full-Size.

Pledge: $9 per bonus plate, added to your Portfolio B, C, D, E or F pledge.

4) TOUR OF THE OFF-WHITE HOUSE and FOLLOW-ME-TO-WORK DAYS

NOTE: This reward is available EITHER as an "ADD-ON" to a portfolio pledge or as a "STAND-ALONE" pledge (reward) item.

This one's a bit pricey, considering that you have to get yourself here AND pay for your meals and accommodations (I'll be happy to make the reservations at either the Walper Terrace Hotel -- King and Queen Streets -- or the newly refurbished Crowne Plaza Hotel -- King and Benton Streets -- downtown both within walking distance of the Off-White House).

Basically you get to spend the day (or two or three) here, first getting a Tour of the Off-White House (Hey! You're the folks who paid for it, the least I can do is let some of you see it while I'm still alive) and then you get to follow me around on my subsequent work day (or two or three).

No idea what I'll be doing: depends on the day(s). Probably writing and drawing THE STRANGE DEATH OF ALEX RAYMOND and doing basic business stuff. Anytime I'm not doing "thinking" work or if I'm going to do the banking or going to the post office or shopping for groceries, I'll be happy to answer any questions you have and talk about anything you want to talk about.

PLEDGE: $900

Risks and challenges

With my drawing hand still "out of commission", the biggest risk, I think, is that there won't be enough returning Pledge Partners content with "just" autographs (which, thank God, don't have any negative effect on my right hand: being all "fingers and thumb and no wrist"). I'm hoping that "upping my game" when it comes to personal contact will help the retention rate of Pledge Partners: typing more left-handed Updates on the site, answering posted questions the same way -- and answering questions requiring LONGER answers on YouTube!

Also, if I can avoid having to go in the hospital for major surgery -- as happened with CAN3 -- during the last week of the campaign...that would definitely help!

Thanks!

Dave

TOUR OF THE OFF-WHITE HOUSE and FOLLOW-ME-TO-WORK DAYS.

Probably writing and researching THE STRANGE DEATH OF ALEX RAYMOND and doing basic business stuff.

Anytime I'm not doing "thinking" work or if I'm going to do the banking or going to the post office or shopping for groceries, I'll be happy to answer any questions you have and talk about anything you want to talk about.

Date and time to be mutually scheduled.
