Our device uses thermoelectric cooling plates, also known as Peltier plates, to provide a cooling sensation to the forehead. Our prototype is currently driven by a 9V power source, though this will likely change as we continue development. The plates are powered and get hot on one side, while cooling rapidly on the other. The heat from the warm side gets absorbed by heat sinks and dissipated by very small, silent fans. This allows the cool side to stay well below ambient temperature, as low as 50 degrees Fahrenheit (in ideal conditions). The user controls different levels of cooling through a controller on the side or the app. Without getting too specific, we can adjust temperature by pulsing power to the cooling plates until they stabilize at a lower temperature. By doing this, the plates warm slightly (though still below skin temp) and also conserve battery life.
