Collaborators & Enablers
Watching my mother, a veteran in apparel manufacturing, produce countless sweatshirts for decades, I always thought that they were all a bit too similar. While I appreciated the comfort of sweatshirts as an everyday basic, it bothered me that by and large, their designs differed little other than their branded logo.
Fast forward to today, my mom actually owns and operates her own small factory in Toronto, specializing in sweatshirts. So it would be a missed opportunity if I didn't try to contribute a more distinctive design for the beloved North American staple.
āsum creates elevated basics that strives to be inventive in design yet effortless in style. āsum is born out of the desire to add that piece of effortless rarity in your closet. The hope is to add an element of art in your clothes and infuse creativity into your everyday life.
In addition, āsum is dedicated to:
The goal is to create distinctive pieces that easily complements casual staples in your wardrobe season after season. Slow fashion does not have to be just classic or basic pieces; in a balanced design, it can be creative yet timeless in elegance (kind of like artistic modern architecture).
The issue with fast fashion and seasonal trends is that the short cycle encourages and produces wasteful clothing--wear and throw out after one season. Furthermore, this attributes to low wages as unethical producers place huge pressures on its workers. To illustrate, in some sweatshops, workers do not get paid at all if they do not complete their impossible weekly quota, thus forcing 18+ hour work days seven days a week [Lilly Paltsev, "The Dark Truth About Child Sweatshop Labour, From A Girl Who Escaped", Narcity].
The problem with today is we need to put value back into clothing. Slow fashion simply supports better wages and proper working conditions, in addition to less waste for a better environment.
āsum makes conscious thoughtful choices in regards to materials, favoring more natural materials over synthetic ones (which use toxic chemicals harmful to the environment) .
This collection uses 100% G.O.T.S. certified organic cotton. GOTS or the Global Organic Textile Standard defines "world-wide recognized requirements that ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labeling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer." Organic cotton is grown without harmful chemicals and uses far less water than conventional cotton. Organic farming is healthier and safer for farmers and their communities. As there are no organic cotton producers in Canada, the organic cotton is imported from India and knitted in Montreal.
Local small batch manufacturing not only leaves a smaller carbon footprint to our environment, but it counter acts against wasteful over-production the fashion industry is used to accepting. Numerous established labels are guilty of burning billions of unsold merchandise each year. Instead of over-producing whilst estimating a season's trends and demands, small local production goes hand in hand with non-seasonal slow fashion methodologies.
āsum comes from a long history in apparel manufacturing. My mother is a veteran in the industry. To help pay my way through school, I worked all odds and ends in garment factories. The people that sew the garments and cut the threads—they are my neighbors as they have watched me grow over the years. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to learn tailoring and couture techniques from skillful masters at FIT. Thus, with immense respect for the backbone and artistry of the industry, āsum only seeks to partner with manufacturers that uphold a high level of quality and respectable ethical practices.
Ethical practice and partnership is not a goal for āsum, it is a moral standard. In fact, because of my hands-on approach to production and my decision to work with small family-owned operations, it is nearly impossible for unethical practice to go unnoticed.
Lastly, apparel manufacturing is a highly skilled trade. Even my mother with her experience will humbly share that she knows little about other divisions of apparel manufacturing (she's skilled in knits). Yet the value and artistry in clothing has been highly lost by society. Fashion should benefit beyond glossy editorials and fast sales; for a viable ecosystem, it needs to equally benefit the makers and the environment as well.
This project is about freeing the classic elements of a sweatshirt into a less expected form. The pieces are crafted in Toronto, by my mother and a partnering factory, using 100% G.O.T.S certified organic cotton--a lightweight fleece knitted in Montreal.

In order to facilitate a flexible reward offering, I have provided a pledge-calculator/order-form. Any available earlybirds will be shown on the calculator/form.
(0) Select the styles you want.
(1) Go to the calculator/form here. Fill in the order, shipping, and tax info (if applicable) in order to calculate the total pledge and reward level.
(2) While keeping the calculator/form open, checkout here on Kickstarter using the "Total Pledge" in USD and the given reward level calculated.
(3) Fill in the remaining form and click "Submit". This is required to match your order.--Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.
REWARD SUMMARY (prices in USD)
- The prices shown in the rewards (on the right) are just a minimum. The actual pledge required will depend on your selection.
- The actual earlybird availability is per style and is shown on the calculator/form.
- For Canadians, because rewards are shipped from within Canada (avoiding international shipping), I am required to collect HST/GST tax. The tax will be calculated on the form. (Sorry, I wish I didn't have to do this...)
- For shipping to Maryland, there is sales tax. (This project started in Brooklyn but I will be relocating to Maryland.)
- Prices are in USD. This is because my current business residence are located in the US at the moment. (I do travel frequently to Toronto to my mother's for this project.)
- If a particular style is very very unpopular, I may need to consider cancelling the style as it may be too costly. To avoid this, please share this project and help me grow!
At the start, the color options will be limited to 3 colors, voted through the calculator/form.
- 30K stretch goal --> 4 color options
- 60K stretch goal -- > 5 color options
- 100K stretch goal --> 6 color options
To reach stretch goals and make this a success, please share this project! Every bit helps!
Development & Manufacturing
My mother has been working in apparel manufacturing nearly all her life. Since immigrating to Canada, she's produced sweatshirts for numerous high quality brands. From taking my design room prototypes to making and testing production samples, her expertise throughout has been indispensable.
Production will be completed by my mother's small factory and a partnering factory, both in the Toronto greater area, with my mother's help in over seeing all the manufacturing set up and process. (Because my mother's factory has ongoing work for existing clients, it would be much too stressful and difficult for her to take on an entire side project like this.)
I purposely chose January as the shipping date as to avoid promising the Christmas deadline. However, shipping in December is not entirely out of reach. So if you have some flexibility (like alternative gift options), I would love for you to consider backing this project for potential Christmas gifts.
To be honest, the idea of a scheduled Kickstarter production timeline is a bit contradictory. To explain, I cannot schedule production with my manufacturer until the funding period and the surveys are complete. So the timeline below is simply my best guess based on all my preparation. Nonetheless, from the successful completion of my previous project, I hope you can trust I will do my best to follow timelines and provide frequent updates.

Risks and challenges
Growing up working in apparel factories, I have witnessed countless things gone wrong during production. I have done as much planning and sampling work as possible to prepare for this and avoid delays. All the production and suppliers I have lined up are ready for what's ahead.
Please be assured that I am a very honest and reliable individual. I have worked for a number of large technology and financial firms and my performance reviews are always stellar. I was also ranked at the top in one of the most reputable engineering schools and have won numerous awards in a number of fields. I try my best in everything I do. If anything, you can review my previous project comment section to see how well I communicated and delivered.
I will be keeping open and honest communication with all my backers. Thank you for believing in me.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
