About this project
What is Headlines?
Headlines is a feature film produced in collaboration with the University of Missouri’s Film Studies Department. The film is about a young man and his struggle with self-identity after the death of a close friend. Marrying elements of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Headlines follows protagonist Guy Javal in his effort to combat severe depression. Guy undergoes a experimental surgery to change the way his brain reacts to even the smallest accomplishment, but as he recovers from the operation, he soon experiences near euphoric stimulation associated with the simplest of tasks. He quickly becomes addicted to the pleasure, sparked by any success, and his life spirals out of control.
We've set our story in a world on the brink of collapse. The tense atmosphere complements the perilous balance Guy has struck between recovery and self-destruction.
But what makes this project something special, you might ask? Co-writers and Co-Directors Chris Olsen and Trevin Satterfield, along with Producer Brian Maurer, partnered with the University of Missouri to create a learning environment for students interested in participating in production and discovering the art of filmmaking. Starting in early January, students have been instructed in lighting techniques, sound capture, and cinematography. Meanwhile, they have been running pre-production for the film, scouting locations, connecting with local businesses, casting actors and more. Students will finish their course in May, and in June will take control of production under the guidance of Olsen, Satterfield and Maurer.
How to help us out!
Both the script for the film and our approach to this Kickstarter campaign were influenced by Raymond Carver's A Small, Good Thing, a short story that delves into the healing power of food in times of crisis. In our film, these crises include death, recovery, and betrayal; in pre-producing Headlines, the crisis is feeding our crew.
We’re looking to raise $3000 to finalize all preparations for the production in June. Your support will go primarily towards craft services, which means our hard-working all-student crew can be compensated in nutrition. Keeping a crew's hunger sated boosts morale on set, leading to a stronger finished product. So, we like our students, and we think you'd like them too, if you met them, so help us feed them!
The best way to help us out is to donate through Kickstarter. By doing so, your credit card will be charged the amount of your preferred donation. Your donation will then go directly to funding this project. First things first, check out all the rewards that we've come up with there on the right. Then, decide what you think you would feel comfortable donating. Every dollar will help us reach our goal!
What happens when I donate?
When you click on the donate button, you’ll be taken through a short process to donate to our project. Your donation will be booked, but your card WILL NOT be charged until the timer runs out. When the timer runs out and we’ve reached our goal, everyone that donated will all be charged at the same time, your support will come to us, and filming can begin!
When we hit our goal, our reward system will become active. You'll notice that on each reward there is an estimated delivery date. That's when those particular gifts will be arriving to you! So choose wisely!
What happens if time runs out on us?
Yeah... There's that. So...if we don’t hit our mark by the time our timer runs out, none of the donors get charged, and we LOSE ALL THE MONEY DONATED THUS FAR. That’s the one thing about this process: We have to hit our mark. And we need your help to do it!
