The campaign ends at midnight tonight. No gesture is meaningless -- if you believe in us, in Sleep Study, in our mission, we already have plans (so many plans!) and will create awesome stories no matter how this turns out. Connect with us here and we'll keep you informed; you'll be a part of our tribe as we grow, create, and make cool stuff happen.
Presented through found-footage videos, blog posts, and Twitter feeds, Sleep Study tells the story of a lab assistant's increasingly desperate attempts to blow the whistle on their sinister employers.
Leaked interview tapes, security footage, and video project diaries paint the picture of a research facility where hapless subjects are held at the sadistic and esoteric whims of its shadowy staff and administrators.
There's an element of trans-media, interactive performance to the series, as leaked videos are accompanied by a live Twitter feed that adds an extra dimension to the story, as the whistle-blower interacts with the viewing audience.
In addition to the episodic release of videos online, each season of the series will also be available as a compiled digital download or DVD, complete with archives of tweets, behind-the-scenes extras, and other supplementary materials.
Burning Brigid Media is a Chicago-based production company with a focus on creating a culture where diversity is seen as normal, through improved representation in the arts. Our goal is to contribute to a media landscape where minorities, women, LGBTQ, and other marginalized people appear not as stereotypes, tokens, or caricatures, but as fully fledged complex characters with their own motivations and drives.
In that spirit, Sleep Study has been cast race- and gender-blind. All actors were considered for any parts they wished to audition for. We took the best without limiting ourselves to a specific type, working with each actor's strengths. We view this as a boon for us and for Sleep Study, as asking the actors to make the character their own has given us new, and better, directions for the story.
Kat is a Midwest native, but born with an Irish passion that was a bit too big for a small town. A collaborative performer who is equal to the challenge of co-creating a story, she has been featured in a number of independent films, including the award-winning short film Hatboxes (Fernwork Productions), Out of Sight (Nebula Creatives), and 16th Street (Studio 22). She is a company member of Terra Mysterium Performance Troupe, and has performed with them both musically and theatrically at the Chicago Fringe Festival, a music video, and multiple festivals and venues. A natural storyteller, her personal mission is to tell the story, and thus change the world, one heart at a time.
Michael is a teller of strange stories for stranger people. He collects them, the oddballs. The mystics and fire-spinners, the sages and tricksters. He curates their tales, combines their elements and lets them rattle around inside his rock-tumbler skull until they gleam, then spills them loose onto the page for like-minded readers to enjoy. He writes fast-paced stories about real people in fantastic situations, plots with just a twist of the surreal, set in worlds just a shadow’s breadth from our own. He’s the author of the Galvanic Century series of Steampunk Thrillers, the literary apocalyptic short story collection Grief, and the supernatural serial Profane Apotheosis.
John is a happily married director and cinematographer, lover of dogs, Instagram addict (@windycitycamera), and all-around happy dude. He has shot projects of all shapes, sizes, and budgets; whether it's short films like the neo-noir Fate Accompli or feature films such as the character-driven NightLights, or whether it's traveling around the globe for the Bangladesh documentary Strong Bodies Fight, producing promotional spots for Research Down Syndrome or the Back2School program, or lensing the HBO GO web series "Single Long" in his hometown of Chicago, he's always eager to collaborate and tell unique stories in a visually dynamic style. He also serves as the producer of the award-winning production company Glass City Films, through which he has directed the feature films Happily After and Chrysalis, the latter of which exists today thanks to the incredible generosity of over 350 Kickstarter backers and a phenomenal cast and crew.
The lion's share of our budget goes to paying the cast and crew. We believe that it's very important in the indie film scene to offer paid roles to both talent and behind-the-scenes crew, rather than continuing the idea that low-budget means that people's efforts don't deserve compensation. Making a movie, especially a low-budget one, is a lot of hard work and long hours, and we would no more expect our hardworking team to work for free than we would expect an accountant, grocer, barista, account manager, banker, or anyone else to work for free. Even when you love your job, you still deserve to be able to keep a roof over your head.
This ties in to our desire to create more varied, and genuine, career opportunities in particular for women and minorities within the film industry.
Donations of ANY amount are deeply appreciated. Every little bit helps. You can also help us significantly by sharing this with your friends, family, fan communities, and on social media like Facebook and Twitter. The more people who know about us, the more people can help!
$28,000: We hire a location manager to streamline the location scouting process, allowing us to finalize our production and release schedule more quickly, and get episodes of Sleep Study to you sooner!
$32,000: We hire a second-unit photographer/cinematographer so we can make much cooler behind-the-scenes extras, including on-set photos and a behind-the-scenes documentary.
$35,000: First Look: season 2 teaser trailer: We will produce the Sleep Study season 2 teaser trailer and send it to all backers at $10 or more -- months before public release!
More stretch goals will be revealed as we reach these milestones.
Risks and challenges
Beyond financial challenges, the most significant challenge will be in the hiring and location scouting process. While we have budgeted substantial time both for location scouting and for filling out our production crew, these processes are not always predictable ones. However, we have surrounded ourselves with resourceful, knowledgeable people with extensive local industry experience, and know we can rely on them to help us out with recommendations, advice, and referrals. In the worst case scenario, it takes us a little longer than expected to organize locations and crew and finalize the shooting schedule. Best case scenario, we exceed our funding goal to an extent that allows us to hire a location manager to simplify and speed up that process for us.
We will always do our best to keep to our planned production and release schedule. If it changes, we will communicate that to you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
