Firewords was set up by a small group of creatives who were frustrated with writing magazines that concentrated on substance over style, or vice versa. Firewords Quarterly aims to have an abundance of both; fantastic creative writing enhanced by the design, visuals and illustrations that accompany it.
About the editor:
My name is Dan Burgess. I’m a professional graphic designer and writer based in the UK. For a long time, I've dreamed of launching my own literary journal, so I am completely devoted to making Firewords a success. I want to make short fiction and poetry more accessible and, above all, I think new writers deserve a stronger platform to have their writing seen and remembered. As well as myself, I also have a great team of editors, writers, illustrators and designers behind me who are just as passionate about this project. We are all excited to deliver the first issue.
Issue Zero & Issue One:
The pictures on this page are of Issue Zero, a teaser issue intended to pique interest in the publication and help make Firewords Quarterly a continued reality. The writing styles and visuals are indicative of those that will be included in future issues.
Issue Zero was digitally printed in a tabloid newspaper format. Issue One will differ in that it will be printed using the traditional newspaper method, meaning a higher quality print and more vivid colours. It will also have slightly smaller dimensions, at 180mm x 260mm*, making it much more convenient and easy to read (even when on the move). Our aim is to give short fiction and poetry a wider audience and make it more accessible. On this basis, we have created something that you can dip into and escape with during your idle time, and which promises to be much more rewarding and productive than those cat videos we all love! (* subject to change)
As the magazine will be quarterly, the loose theme for Issue One is 'Spring' and it will be completed and shipped in early May. We already have some amazing writing lined up for this issue and the design is well underway.
UPDATE: We've just revealed our Issue One cover artwork! It was created by the very talented Adam McDade. We have been huge fans of his work for a while now so were thrilled when he agreed to create this piece especially for our Spring edition. You can also bag a print by Adam McDade as one of the rewards for backing the project. Check it out in the rewards section.
Your pledge means the world to us and will go towards printing and shipping costs. So far, Firewords has been independently funded in its entirety, and we need your support to get Issue One to as many people as possible (including you).
You can also contribute in other ways. As mentioned, we've had fantastic submissions from all over the world, but submissions are still open - so if you're a writer and want to get your work noticed, there’s still time to submit and become an even bigger part of Firewords. You can find our guidelines at www.firewords.co.uk/submit. We're also continually on the lookout for artists, photographers, illustrators and designers to collaborate with on the visuals. We want this publication to be an eclectic mix of styles and influences. Get in touch and see how you can join us in this exciting project.
We have lined up a great selection of rewards to make your backing of Firewords even more worthwhile. Every pledge level includes a copy of Issue One, shipped right to your door. For higher donations, we also have some stunning, limited edition art prints by some of the talented artists and illustrators involved with the Firewords project.
Please note: If you would like to add a copy of Issue Zero to a higher level pledge, get in touch and we'll put together a custom reward for you.
Keep in touch:
Upon backing the project, you will receive updates on the progress of Firewords right here on Kickstarter. You can also follow our journey on Twitter and Facebook, or why not join our mailing list which can be found at firewords.co.uk? Spreading the word about our little project is one of the biggest ways you can help us achieve our goal. Thank you for your support!
Risks and challenges
Designing and printing Issue Zero has proven that we are capable of producing Firewords Quarterly. Issue One is well into production and we are receiving high-quality submissions every day. The printer we will be using (The Newspaper Club) is the same one we have used for Issue Zero and other projects in the past, so we know they are reliable and brilliant at what they do.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
