About

UPDATE. JULY 15, 2012

My Friends and Family around the world,

We need your support now more than ever. Our funding efforts through Kickstarter were unfortunately not successful, therefore we will not receive ANY of the funding that was so gracisouly given and you will not be charged anything. However, we've taken this minor set-back as call to arms - We will not and cannot fail our friend, Frajil. Therefore, myself, Dan and our few film crew members will carry on as originally planned, traveling to Haiti in a few short weeks to film Frajil's story of imprisonment in our attempts to get him a fair retrail. Our driving force is thinking of Frajil in that 20' x 20' prison cell shared with 60+ men...how could we walk away from this story?

We're still making the movie during the month of August, with a drastically trimmed production schedule and crew. We still need help so we can pay our Haitian actors, rent the gear we need and take care of food/lodging/travel. To everyone who has given through Kickstarter, your card has not been charged and your pledge has not been validated, nor will it be. Alternatively, we will be accepting donations directly through Paypal here, a much easier process than the Amazon/Kickstarter donation process. You can also mail a donation check to: c/o Burgeon Media, 474 Dean Street, Brooklyn, NY 11217.

We are making a huge push to reach $10,000 before we leave for Haiti August 6th. Please consider giving what you can, think about the huge impact this film could have in not only one man’s life, and possibly the justice system in a country.

If you have already donated, please consider sharing the campaign with friends.

Check out our one minute video update.

You can follow the progress of the film on the Burgeon Media's Facebook Page, Burgeon Media's Blog, Frajil Movie Project Blog.

No amount is too small, even $5 will get us closer to our goal. Sharing this video with your own circles will help this cause immensely as well.

Love and respect,

Dan, Amara & the Frajil Movie Project Team

What is the Frajil Movie Project?
The Frajil Movie Project is the collaborative effort of filmmakers from New York City, Los Angeles and Haiti who have come together to tell the story of FRAJIL. Unique to Kickstarter, the Frajil Movie Project is a hybrid production that fuses film, human rights, and music to tell a story based on the real life events of a Haitian man - Frajil.

When completed, the project will have generated three separate products -  a human rights film requesting a fair re-trial of the real life Frajil (which we'll screen for Haitian authorities and in film festivals) an epic long-format music video to create a viral/entertainment web campaign, and a micro version of the film for different organizations to request better conditions, access to legal representation and health care within Haiti's prisons.

All to help a real life protagonist in his plight for justice and individuals in similar situations.

What is the origin of the Frajil Movie Project?
Written by Emmy Award nominee Director/Producer Daniel Ramirez, "Frajil" is based on the actual events of a young man's life in pre-earthquake Haiti.

While directing a documentary on Haiti's prison conditions, Dan met Frajil in 2009 and was deeply shaken by his road to imprisonment. What started with a borrowed bike left in the hands of Frajil, lead to his subsequent arrest for a missing man, and despite a lack of any evidence, or eyewitnesses, Frajil was tried and sentenced to life in prison. He had no lawyer, his trial was carried out in another language and he was not allowed to speak. To date, there are still no updates in evidence, eye witnesses or sentencing. We hope the Frajil project garners enough attention to help Frajil and his lawyers get a proper retrial.

For more info on the story contact Dan at info@burgeonmedia.com

Frajil's original video. Haiti 2009

What is the synopsis of film?
Based loosely on Frajil's case and legal adversity, the script focuses on 48 hours within Frajil's life, that of the girl he loves and the weight of their conflicting social standings. When a man disappears and is feared murdered, the gross misuse of power jeopardizes the fate of the two lovers.

Where does the music entertainment come into the project?
As an additional platform in telling the story of Frajil, we'll also retrofit the footage shot in Haiti into a long-format music video that plays like a short film, but weaves the amazing music of Brooklyn-based Black Taxi. Therefore, the cost of one production suddenly creates multiple products.

Why are you qualified to make this film and music video?
Our American crew has been working in Haiti and on Haitian issues since 2009. We have filmed with and for organizations as Partners In Health, Zanmi Lasante, the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti and the Bureau de Avocats Internationaux. We have a deep connection to Haiti and it's people, many of us were heavily involved in aid relief after the quake, working with our friends on the ground to run fuel and blood to hospitals before any country or large NGO had arrived on the ground.

As filmmakers we have made films as large as the Jackass series for Paramount all the way to hit TV shows such as Ice Road Truckers for History Channel. We've directed and written for the likes of Laurence Fishburne, Eminem and James Earl Jones. In the music world we've worked directly with the likes of Michael Buble, Suge Knight, Monsters Of Folk and the Dave Matthews Band. We've filmed in more then 80 countries, under the toughest conditions imaginable.

In the advertising world our work has garnered Cannes Lions and helped to re-brand flailing companies. Here's a small taste of what Burgeon Media's been working on the past few years:

All this to say, we're ready for this film.

Our Haitian counterparts have worked with the likes of Donna Karen, trained under Sofia Copolla, Paul Haggis, and Edwidge Danticat. We have incredible confidence in their ability. For more on the Haitian filmmakers we're collaborating with visit www.cineinstitute.com

Why should you help us make this movie?
Aside from the incredible cause, the fact that through the making of this project a large portion of the funds are going to Haitian artists or local economies, or that every single dollar you spend gets you something awesome in return, this project is a first for Kickstarter. No other film project has retrofitted footage and story for multiple purposes like we have. You are getting the best bang for your buck, helping good causes and giving work to folks on the ground in Haiti who rarely get paid accordingly for their skills.

You're also getting some pretty wonderful gifts in return. Beautiful hand-crafted pieces of art from Haitian hands, cool custom Tee's, and if you bring together your company or your organization for a group donation - you can have your own media piece through Burgeon Media's production services.

How will you make this film?
We are hiring local Haitian filmmakers to collaborate with a small crew of American filmmakers and every level of production is contributing towards investing in Haiti's artistic community, both financially and emotionally. We're bringing a bare bones American crew, with gear, and filling in the crew gaps with Haitian collaborators including co-directors and producers who will make this film as much theirs as it is ours.

Director of Photography Bill Thomas shooting in New York's Hudson Valley with Dan Ramirez and Amara Untermeyer. October 2011

When and where are you shooting this film?
With your help to make our financial goal, we will film over the last three weeks of August in Jacmel, Haiti and are set to complete the film November 2012.

Why do you need Kickstarter?
Films and Music Videos of this nature take a long time to fund. Kickstarter expedites the process, helps us reach a much larger community who will know they have a direct effect on a creative endeavor, and it helps us spread the word about this important effort. Fundraising through Kickstarter is not only a great way to raise funds to maintain creative independence, but allows for artistic hybrid projects such as this one to gain their own organic advertising lives through social networking. If we were to go through private funding, not only would we lose most creative control, we'd also spend hundreds of thousands in advertising  alone just to spread the word - Kickstarter does both. And we get the chance to work intimately and directly with amazing people like you.

List of items we're raising money for:
- Quiet, efficient electricity to power our heavy duty lights for night shoots (Haiti has very little power at times, and generators wreck audio in small spaces)
- Paying our Haitian crew, local artists and Haitian actors collaborating on the project
- Logistics (transportation, food for both crews + actors, lodging)
- Props, wardrobe and location
- The rental of backup camera body/second camera (F3 to match the one our DP is bringing and letting us use for free).
- Grip equipment
- Airline fees to bring all this stuff down, including our skeleton US team
- Insurance for all of this rental gear and our crew (most of the American crew is volunteering, but we need to make sure everyone and their gear are safe in case of emergency).
- Kickstarter and Amazon fees... this is an awesome service, but Kickstarter has to keep the lights on, and so does Amazon (Roughly 8-10% of the funds go to these collective services.)
- Kickstarter donor gifts - we want to give something back to you guys for making this possible!!
- Post-production & sound design...you have no idea how expensive this is!

What happens if the money isn’t raised in time?
Every Kickstarter project must be fully funded before its deadline or no money changes hands. If we do not reach our goal, we do not receive any of the funds and your credit card or debit card will not be charged.

Films are expensive and they take an immense amount of work to make - even short independent films. Everyone involved in this production - the American crew, the Haitian crew, the donor-gift vendors, editors, gear rentals - everyone believes in this story and have already contributed what they can to the project. This is why we're asking you for your help, and to give what you can to this unique effort. You're playing a crucial role in a powerful movement, and it's because of you that this vision comes to life in a real way. If any aspect of this project inspires you, please give what you can, share this project with others and reach out to us with your thoughts and support! You made this happen and we value your words. THANK YOU.
