Buninjas - A father/daughter collaboration book
Enter the magical world of Buninjus and follow two bunnies on a fun and mystical journey. Written by a kid, illustrated by her dad, this light hearted 36 page book combines the unique narrative talents of youth with a seasoned water color expert.
How it all started
During the course of 1st grade, it became obvious that my daughter, Amelia, didn’t like reading and was actively avoiding it as much as possible. When school went out for summer break, I decided that we’d work regularly on reading. The goal was to have her up to a 1st grade level by the end of summer and hopefully enjoying books as well.
It was a warm July evening, the sun was setting and we’d just finished a particularly hard session of slow progress and sounding out words. It was then that a crazy idea came to me...
“Why don’t you write a book!” I said to Amelia, “and I’ll draw the pictures.”
Amelia just looked back with utter disapproval on her face.
“Trust me, it’ll be fun. You write whatever you want and I’ll draw the pictures.”
The next day we began to talk about the book, eventually settling on the idea of two bunnies who wanted to be ninjas. From that point on, Amelia’s mind started to form a story.
A book written by a kid
I am so proud of this book, I can hardly put it into words. The whole point of Buninjas was to help build my daughter's confidence in reading. Did it work? I'm not sure. But I can see her growth everyday as her vocabulary increases and she begins to read words with ease. The pure joy I see on her face when I point to Buninjas and say, "You wrote this book." It's just... the best.
I hope that any reluctant readers can look at this book and be inspired by what my daughter has accomplished. She struggled, was grumpy at times, but she had fun and I believe that fun shines through. At home, in a classroom, or at the library, I hope this book can spread the joys of reading and writing to every child. That is why I've included the story of my daughter's reluctance to read in it's back pages so everyone who picks up Buninjas can be inspired by her story.
