About

Dark October will be a single player third person action role-playing game in 3D with a touch of mystery. Through investigations, the player solves the mystery in each level to uncover the dark emissary commanding the demons in one of the many areas and defeat it using enchanted swords and magic. Defeat them, and make your choices, and be rewarded with the kind of power that match your choices. Use the newly gained power to enhance your sword and magic.

Take down your enemies where most weapons could not with the enchanted sword.

Exclusive to backers only, we will release a playable demo in October 2017. Visit our official website at darkoctobergame.com.

At this early stage, your support and interest in Dark October would help shape the future of Dark October. The game is still in development and your ideas and suggestions can be added. As an active supporter, you can at any time shoot us an email, and we would consider your suggestions. By the time Dark October is released, we hope that you would enjoy the game as much as we enjoy building it.

Similar Games

Dark October will be a 3D third person action role-playing game with a touch of mystery in a world no longer ours. In our opinion, the gameplay of Dark October is closest to Fable game series.

Our combat system consists of weapons and magic, where our sword fight is like in Destiny, and magic is like in Fable or Witcher 3. In addition, Dark October would have simple combo moves for both weapons and magic. Performing a combo would unleash devastating damage with style. Aside from blasting your enemies with magic, our magic system also enables the player to place a variety of sigils that work like traps similar to the Yrden sign in Witcher 3.

Apart from the main story quest, Dark October would have side quests similar to Sleeping Dogs, where some side quests are only available after the player has progressed in the main quest. Plus, in Dark October, the choices the player makes would affect the main and side quests as well as the different encounters, powers and items the player would attain.

Similar Stories

Dark October is centred on a world where evil has taken over. Commanded by dark emissaries, demons roam the streets of cities and suburbs, taking down whoever that is in the way of their wicked plans. The player plays as the protagonist who works for the Order to eradicate evil and restore balance to the world.

The stories in Dark October would share similarities with TV series like Supernatural or Anime like D. Gray-Man and Blue Exorcist.

Plot

Amongst the chaos in Dark October, the protagonist learned the existence of the four masters which then form the Order that specialise in fighting evil. Other organisations were also formed at the time of chaos for similar purposes. Dark October took many people close to the protagonist, so the protagonist decided to join the Order to help in restoring balance to the world.

The Order, one of the many organisations formed to fight against evil.
The Order, one of the many organisations formed to fight against evil.

The protagonist learned combat and magic at the Order. After overcoming difficult tests of skill and survival, the protagonist graduated as an occult hunter and the Order granted the protagonist permission to vanquish evil in the world.

Gameplay

Since Dark October, demons made our world their home. Only the town of Shorecliffe and surrounding areas are safe from evil.

The player plays as either the male protagonist, Tristan Moore, or female protagonist, Trisha Moore. The core of Dark October gameplay is the strong character development as well as the unified and customisable nature of combat and magic skills, which will be only be revealed in detail to backers as the development of Dark October progresses. While in the field, even the smallest of trinkets could help the player in the fight against evil.

In every level, the player is sent by the Order to an area of a city or suburb taken over by demons. The Order will supply the player with any information it has, but it is up to the player to patch up the missing information through investigations. During investigations, the player would encounter and defeat various demons that get in the way. By solving the mystery, the player unmasks the dark emissary hidden amongst us and defeat it with enchanted sword and magic.

Demons are barely visible in Dark October, being as dark as shadows themselves.

Once the dark emissary is defeated, depending on the different choices made, the player acquires different upgrades, powers, and skills. Aside from the main objective of purging the world of evil, the player is free to help out in side quests, discover new outfits, relics or Easter eggs.

Combat

Playing as the protagonist, the player will encounter demons or other monsters as opponents. These opponents can only be harmed by magic, and only magic can protect you. Our magic combat system features using the 4 elements that can be channelled in either light or dark pathway. Use the light pathway for protection and improvements to the protagonist’s abilities, while use the dark pathway to do damage to opponents. The power of the 4 elements can be used directly or focused into a sword or clothing depending on player’s preference. Combining different elements either through strategic preparations or tactical decisions will be the key to a successful battle.

Story

Magic itself was the mystery.

People believed 300 years ago, magic exists, along with the all forms of demons and those who worshipped them. If you ask any of the older folks in Shorecliffe, they say

“We owe it to the brave heroes who sealed away demons. But beware, dark metal could undo the doorways between our world and theirs, and it should never be found.”

Is there such thing as magic, demons or dark metal that threatens our world?

An age-old question asked by many, even by the greatest of minds. But no, there isn’t. Not until Dark October, that one day in October, when demons appeared and killed nearly everyone, when magic is no longer a mystery, but real. Now, the new mystery is why did October went dark?

World

Right before Dark October, advances in technology made it possible to build a new tunnel and railroad through the hills connecting the city of Highshore Hills and Shorecliffe town, and Shorecliffe was no longer a small town.

After Dark October, the sky is forever dark and the demons, they thrive in the darkness, roaming freely in almost every street and building out there.

The twins, Tristan and Trisha Moore, recently moved to Shorecliffe, a suburb that is now closer to the city of Highshore Hills with the newly constructed tunnel connecting them. They live with their parents in a new apartment block.

Older than Trisha Moore by a three minutes, Tristan Moore likes to take responsibility in taking care of his younger twin sister when their parents are busy working during the day. However, Tristan is extremely clumsy with everyday tasks, and never runs out of bad luck. His strange taste for food make him a horrible cook. But when it comes to herbs, Tristan is a natural. Not only he has planted a wide variety of healthy herbs and spices, he also knows how to use them to treat minor wounds and ailments. Tristan is also friendly with everyone and good with animals.

Unlike Tristan Moore, Trisha Moore is sensitive and awkward with people. Whenever Tristan messes up the cooking, she takes the chance to replace her meals with sweet and creamy snacks and drinks. To prevent this, her parents ensure there are always supermarket meals in the fridge for Tristan to use as backup. As a natural artist, Trisha materialises her creativity into works of art. Stuffed animals are her favourite and she makes another one every now and then. Good with animals, Trisha prefers to interact with them over people.

The Order was formed by the four masters: Gideon Martel, Awena Sharman, Alfred Sagen, and Chiara Heldey.

Although a risk taker, he never risks the lives of his team by planning ahead and following the predictions made by the Master of Talisman. While in the field, he charges headfirst into danger, but never forgets to use his magic to support himself and his team. For every victory, no matter how small, Gideon likes to party. With a knack of lightening the mood in any situation, Gideon tends to drag his entire team to celebrate with him.

Born as a seer, Awena Sharman succeeded the title of Master of Talisman in the Order. Her predictions always come true and these help the Order stay one step ahead of evil. Magic spells and talismans comes naturally to Awena, her understanding transcends what is known in the Order, allowing her to summon spirits into our world and call forth forbidden spells. Although her magic is powerful, it takes time to cast and she is as vulnerable as an innocent without her spirits protecting her. Brave and honourable, she risks her life in the field even though she could die the moment her spirits or team fail to protect her.

Although Alfred has talent for controlling the elements, he is one hardworking occult hunter. Relying on his agility and tactics, he takes down all his targets with one fell swoop. Although powerful, he is caring and kind-hearted. Engaged to Awena Sharman, Alfred worries that Awena would die one day, especially all seers could not see their own end. To protect her, he never stops improving his skills. As a fast reader and learner, he researches and records the history and skills of occult hunters.

Chiara Heldey

Chiara Heldey, Master of Aether.

Female

The last Master of Aether died a long time ago and no one succeeded the title until Chiara Heldey was awakened to her powers at a young age. Her older sister did not inherit the ability of manipulating light and dark magic, so the two sisters started to live separate lives. Strange and temperamental, Chiara appears to talk to herself when she is actually talking to those on the other side of the veil. As a novice to light and dark magic, magic spells backfire on her sometimes. A natural with herbs, Chiara supplies occult hunters with powders and oils for use in the field. Since processing herbs is a lot of work, Chiara crafts dolls that help her with nearly all the hard labour.

Goals

As Bun Bun Studios is a licensed Playstation developer, we are prepared to continue the development of Dark October regardless of the outcome of crowdfunding by seeking alternative sources of funding. The purpose of crowdfunding is not only about seeking funds from people, but also to determine the amount of interest in Dark October as well as to invite people with such interest to become a part of the development of Dark October.

For the development of Dark October, we aim to raise at least AUD 10,000 to have the game framework established, and the first level completed. For additional content and features, we will set them as stretch goals.

Fundraising goals for Dark October in Australian dollars (AUD).
Fundraising goals for Dark October in Australian dollars (AUD).

For this game, we have a maximum of 12 levels in our plans. If we reach our fundraising goal of AUD 60,000, we intend to increase the quality of each level, giving you a better and more engaging gaming experience. This includes, but not limited to

  • graphics: inclusion of ambient creatures, more appearance altering items, changing weather, inclusion of day and night cycle.
  • gameplay: side quests, weapon and armor upgrades, more challenging enemies, more items, enable trading and exchange of items, inclusion of life routines to NPCs.

If we raise over 100,000 in funds, we’ll allocate the surplus to build bonus playable levels for Dark October. These bonus playable levels are included in the “Rank S” reward package.

Risks and challenges

Previously, Bun Bun Studios has been contracted to work on projects and delivered them on-time if not earlier. Although this is the first time we have worked on a game project, we've a lot of experience with Unity 3D engine as demonstrated on our YouTube. Based on that experience, we included possible risks and delays in our estimation that Dark October would take 27 months to complete developing all 12 levels and bonus content.
